Fabric suggestions please
« on: April 14, 2019, 19:14:57 PM »
I want to be prepared incase we have another very hot summer so am currently making a toile for Mccalls 7565 (view A)

https://www.sewessential.co.uk/misses-shirtdresses-sleeve-options-belt-mccalls-pattern-7565

It is pretty voluminous but I think it will be ok with the right fabric - but what?
The pattern suggests cotton blends, cotton lawn, chambray, crepe de chine. I think cotton might be too stiff and cotton lawn too floaty.  Any ideas?  Please bear in mind it`s going to take a good 3 metres 150 cm wide fabric, and more like 4 metres if it is narrower so cost has to be a consideration (also I don`t want to wear a slip under so it can`t be too see-through)

I envisage a cotton lawn, maybe a cotton linen blend. It's tricky as you say you don't want the need for a slip underneath so do you go heavier and thicker or lightweight but more transparent.....?
One solution for a thinner fabric make is to wear longline tight shorts, think chopped off leggings  :P
Let it sew, let it sew, let it sew

Shirting cotton sounds suitable - I've had a quick look and fabworks has some at a good price. Will continue to do some research

Seersucker, lined cotton lawn, silk would be nice.

The pattern suggests cotton blends, cotton lawn, chambray, crepe de chine. I think cotton might be too stiff and cotton lawn too floaty.

Cotton is a fibre, not a fabric as such.  Cotton fibres can be made into the finest of voile through to the heaviest of denims and furnishing fabrics.

You are looking for something a bit finer than most craft/P&Q cottons but not so fine as to be see through, so I concur with the others who suggest shirting fabrics; in cotton or cotton-viscose.  Sometimes that is described as poplin, which (should) mean that the weft threads are softer spun and therefore loftier, than the more twisted fine warp threads.

It's difficult to judge the weight/handle of a facric if you have to buy online.  it would help if the sellers would tell you gsm of the fabric but alas most don't :(   My Fabrics is good in that respect, this is a selection from them, most of which are likely to be right sort of weight about 120-140gsm.  Lots of other sellers out there too.

I’ve got some shirting from Fabworks...it’s far too stiff for a shirt or a dress.

The shirting fabric I bought from Clothspot last year was very soft and drapy.

Back in the day of proper bricks and mortar shopping it used to be decide on a pattern and then find suitable fabric.  Now it's more likely to be buy some fabric and then decide what it will make.  :ninja:

If you want to go for the look at the pattern envelope, cotton madras would be the ideal choice. I am somewhat tempted now....

Minerva has some, but I’m not endeared by their colours....

@sewingj, I had a look at PR and the pattern get very good ratings. One thing several reviewers disliked is the collar, as it seems to be a one-piece one, instead of collar + separate stand.

Given that I have two lengths of pink/blue and blue/blue cotton madras check, I am very tempted now....

@Efemera, when I washed my shirting from Fabworks it softened dramatically.  Did yours soften much after washing?

It does say the fabric “has a slightly crisp feel” so you might have been a bit miffed if it had softened.

I’ve had several shirtings from Fabworks and they’ve all been fine and at the price they are they are certainly worth a punt.

Wanders off determined to avoid Fabworks website.
