If I'm stuck I make something simple like a T shirt from a TNT pattern, a cushion or drawstring bag.
That normally gets things moving for me.
In my sewing room I have a big cupboard full of fabric, and that inspires me before the patterns.
I like to play along on some of the contests here (where they interest me)
Contests ThreadI find that even if I have no real chance of winning its really fun to enter, like sewing along with a group.
I've joined in with SWAKOP, House Beautiful, Small People, about to enter something for Florals and will definitely play with stripes.
My personal approach (which may not apply to others) is to sew little capsules in colour families, that way I can always make outfits in my wardrobe but I do often use the same patterns repeatedly, and tend to pick simple shapes without much detail (not to everyone's taste).
Sometimes (and it seems a bit crazy to admit it) I sew the next thing because it works with the thread colour on the machines. I love to have my thread matching on the sewing machine, overlocker and coverhem machine. I've just set them all up with off white so can do lots of summery things with an off white background. I've started with some things for the florals contest, but have some striped seersucker for a top, a partly made dress that needs finishing and some scraps that could make a tee to go with my sage pieces.
I sometimes overlap projects which use the same thread colour, doing bits on one and then the other, no idea why. I like to have rough plans with some flexibility, but I suspect this is my personality, as I like an overall framework with some flexibility.
So perhaps think of a time when you really enjoyed your sewing, and analyse what about that period did you enjoy.
Do you like to make very complex garments? Do you enjoy sewing for others or for yourself?
Are you wanting to make contemporary relaxed pieces, special occasion wear, vintage styles?
Or do you like a lot of variety?
Maybe your bugbear is you can't buy a specific garment so you want to focus on sewing that.
Have fun!
