As per the title I am looking for some white thread to use with my first shirt. Anything in particular I should look for? :thread:

Do you mean thread to use for sewing seams with a sewing machine?

If so for most things (including shirt weight fabrics) a good quality spun polyester such as Guetermann Sew All is all you need.  Other good brands include Superior Threads Sew Complete or Coats Astra  You might have different brands available in Japan.

To see if a thread is good quality just look at it in a good light, and magnifier if necessary.  If it looks smooth it's good if there are lots and lots of tiny fibres sticking out it's not good.   However all spun threads will have some fibres visible, just compare a reeled silk with a spun silk.
Brenda.  My machines are: Corona, a 1953 Singer 201K-3, Caroline, a 1940 Singer 201K-3, Thirza, 1949 Singer 221K, Azilia, 1957 Singer 201K-MK2 and Vera, a Husqvarna 350 SewEasy about 20 years old. Also Bernina 1150 overlocker and Elna 444 Coverstitcher.

Thanks Brenda, sorry I was a bit cryptic with the question! Yes I mean for final sewing of shirts on a machine.

Thread for Top stitching ... ie the final lines of thread that are visible ...

you'll need a thicker weight thread for that and maybe a topstitch or metallics needle ...
larger eye plus groove that the thread lies in.

Or for general assembly ... a 100 weight sew it all thread in a white to match your fabric.
