Unpicking :( what could I be doing better here?
« on: June 11, 2019, 13:11:52 PM »
So I'm trying to stitch my quilt layers together.
I sandwiched them on the floor, plenty of tape on the bottom layer to keep it smooth.
I used LOTS of safety pins.
I'm using a walking foot and stitching slowly.

But it's the front that doesn't behave! The pieces all have an amount of 'give' and the I'm getting wrinkles in the top.

It's bad enough that I'm unpicking what I've done so far - but I don't know how to improve things when I try again.
Does anyone have any tips that might help?

*Please don't suggest hand stitching - that may be the very best thing, but is not an option for me on a quilt this large. Thank you   :vintage:

Glue.... I always use it and never had a problem even with big quilts.

I always use 505 spray and just safety pins at the four corners

I use spray adhesive which works well (505).  I wonder if the presser foot is set too high?
Willing but not always able :)

Ah sorry, should have said - not glue because I have a pet parrot (birds are extremely sensitive to even small amounts of chemicals in the air. Think Canaries down mines!)

Thank you for responding though - muchly appreciated

I did try increasing the pressure on the foot (using a vintage Singer 201) but that didn't help.

It may just have to do with my crappy piecing skills  :(

Maybe if the presser foot is too high it could cause the fabric to stretch, I would try with it at a lower setting (decrease the pressure) so as not to stretch the fabric.  :) :vintage:

Oh, lower the pressure, I thought you meant MOVE the foot lower LOL

Could you not do it outside... it stays stuck a long time.

Not if I need a flat dry outside floor, no  :) Postage stamp garden on two levels

I had just hoped there was some magic step I was missing out or something. But I will take off the pressure on the foot somewhat, thank you all.

I don't prewash my fabric or batting as the crinkles from shrinkage are very good at hiding wrinkles.  ;)

Lower foot pressure. Larger stitches. Beyond that I don't know.

Stop worrying. It always looks awful when you've got your nose almost on it as you sew. Look at it from 'normal' distance and it won't look anywhere near as bad. We quilters have a nasty habit of thinking everything must be perfect (first time, too), and pointing out all the wobbly bits in case people hadn't noticed them (they hadn't till you mentioned it). Try not to get into these habits. It's a quilt. It will still be a quilt even if it has a few (minor, invisible) blemishes. Call it personality, quirkiness, whatever.
As StitchinTime says, shrinkage will help disguise any problems. With a walking foot, in theory, it should move the layers together so, in theory, you shouldn't get a 'bow wave' in front of the foot. If this is happening try to coax it under the foot as you go. I have found you can lose a little pucker at the seam line (but of course if you do that the quilt police might hammer on your door, though they haven't found me yet so you'll probably get away with it too 0_0). Otherwise, try fmq (but that needs practice - ah, the 'p' word ;)).

Well its pretty bloody obvious isnt it ...

Move the parrot outside,
open the windows,
spray baste the quilt,
let the spray dissipate helped by open windows,
bring parrot back inside
and Voila ...
Quilt basted, Parrot happy ... he will think he's been on holiday

Ta Dah!
