I am hoping someone can help.  I am thinking of purchasing a bernina sewing machine and the series 1000-1008 has caught my eye. Does anyone know the differences and advantages in there models.

There’s a chart available here which has basic information about the different models.

Full details of the 1008 are available on the Bernina website.

I have, and love, a 1008. It does everything I could possibly want. it's very straight forward and because it's fully mechanical, I feel like if anything goes wrong I can get it fixed pretty easily. I also have an old 803 from the late '80s which is still trundling along on its occasional outings. I've made everything on it from chiffon to curtains.

The 803 is fairly similar, but has fewer stitches. I think the differences between the 1000-1008 range is also largely to do with how many stitch patterns it has. But really, beyond the basics, how many do you need??

The only thing to be aware of is the presser feet - there are two types of "old style" feet, and only one fits the 1008 (both fit the 803). The fatter pronged ones won't fit, only the skinny prongs, and never the newer-style single prongs, which is just something to remember if you are buying used ones on Fleabay....
Dancing too much and trying to remember sewing is for fun! Used to be CarolC.

Thank you the differences in the foot attachments could have easily be missed, mind i'm hoping not to become a collector of feet!

I have a new 1008 which I love. I bought it because it is the last superb quality mechanical sewing machine and it is not being manufactured anymore. Sometimes I just want to sew and not read a manual to find out how to do something in my Bernina 570QE. Both have advantages, though. Also, I bought it because I used to have a Bernina 930 Record which I had had from new. Nostalgia!

I also have a Bernina 830 Record which I bought in like new condition last year. I have heard the motors sometimes go on these, as with any old machine, so another reason for the 1008.

The only thing I don’t care for on the 1008 is that you can only raise the presser foot to one height, not extra high on those occasions when you need it. A small price to pay.

I absolutely love the 830 and 1008 and I like my 570, too, but I have more to learn.
