Hello all, I'm returning to dressmaking after about 25 years so I expect to be asking for advice rather then offering it. My old Singer Harmonie 400 doesn't like me much so I'm on the lookout for a good second hand Bernina one with easy button hole function and possibly one that will handle leather.

Jessie, who is very happy to be here!!  :),  but who has far too many sewing machines to be healthy, and a fabric stash which is becoming embarrassing.

Welcome @Big Wheel and welcome back to sewing too.  We are here to tempt you and be a good bad influence   Many of us here are returnees after a long break, you will probably be surprised at what has changed since you last sewed.  Do you dressmake, quilt, bagmake, something else .... ?
Life's too short for ironing.

Welcome @Big Wheel, looking forward to projects. Assuming, you not only got a sewing machine, but also a camera... yes, things have changed in the sewing world!  ;)

Hi Big Wheel and welcome from me too. Your instincts are good there I feel.

A couple of years ago I finally satisfied my lifelong Bernina curiosity with a used 1020 on eBay (it has an electronic foot pedal but is otherwise mechanical) and I fell in love. Since then I've bought two of their early computerised machines (both 1130s) which are now my first choice machines pretty well most of the time while my expensive computerised Pfaff sits unappreciated in the sewing cabinet.

I think they'd cope well enough with thin leather (with the correct needle) but I've used my vintage Singer 201K for repairing handbags and found it fearless. You can pick up a vintage machine incredibly cheaply online and in charity shops. You may have noticed there's a section here devoted to vintage machines if you fancy returning one in need of some attention to an active life again.
Hopefully back more regularly! Ballroom sewing may be permanently paused but bag making is the current focus.
