I've slunk in from the Darkside,  have my sunglasses on and have a question for you Lightside bods ....

I've picked up this top from the charity and thought it would be a nice pressie for my Auntie Gell ...

BUT ... the centre panel of 'lace' down the front is  distinctly yellower and has a much fluffier feel than the lace on the hem and sleeves ...

I'm thinking removing this panel would make this a much nicer. cleaner lined garment.

What do you think and have you any advice about how to go about it????

I’d be concerned that it has been added to hide something. However, I’m sure you could come up with a better solution to anything that might lurk beneath.

Linky to Album

It came away quite easily and with no damage caused or indeed found underneath!.
As expected it was sewn into the shoulder seams ... No problem !

BUT there was a measly 1 1/2" folded in on itself twice binding (?) along the neckline ... which of course it was sewn into too.

The whole panel has come away nicely ..
Now all I have to do is add a nice finish to the neckline!

It looked like it didn't really belong there originally...looks out of place somehow with the other lace bits.

Well done for getting stuck-in. It looks much better now.  :)

You need to re-trace your footsteps, so to speak, and get that binding back on.  ><
It'll probably be a good idea to carefully tack it first.

A bit of a fiddly job, but it can be done. Be careful you don't stretch the neck edge as you work on it.

The strip that came off is a thin cotton that has frayed quite a lot.
Ive done a facing (for a djellabia) before Is there a way I can bind or face this (without a pattern) ???

If I bind it , does it have to be cut on the bias as opposed to across wof ???

If you cut binding it'll need to be cut on the bias so it will sit nicely around the curve of the back neckline.

I'd say it'd be easier to bind than to face, but you could cut a facing without a pattern if you wished to...you just use the present neckline shape as your pattern.

A pity if it's too frayed to go back on.  :(

Yes.

Re-sew the shoulders and then attach the binding.  Best if you measure that carefully and sew it into a wide tube first.  Remember that bias binding around a neckline will need to be very slightly stretched so that it sits nicely.

'Tis done ... using the original binding.
Its not perfect but its better than it was in my opinion and I hope my Auntie Gell will like it and not think anything amiss.
