Has anyone ever made a needle felted picture where you felt the wool onto fabric?
Like this:
(Picture is from

I know that the backing is hessian, but it doesn't look like any hessian I've ever seen - it's much finer - so does it have another name? Does anyone know where I could get some online?

Is it hessian? (jute or sisal fibre). It looks as though it might be linen.
Assuming that you need a loose weave, so that there is room to push the wool fibres in, but not as coarse as tradional sacking I think you should search for linen scrim.

Thank you
@BrendaP
! The picture title is needle-felting-on-hessian but I do agree that it looks more like linen.
Now I'm off to explore those links.
