Has anyone ever made a needle felted picture where you felt the wool onto fabric?

Like this:

(Picture is from Make it in Wales.)

I know that the backing is hessian, but it doesn't look like any hessian I've ever seen - it's much finer - so does it have another name?  Does anyone know where I could get some online?
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

Is it hessian? (jute or sisal fibre).  It looks as though it might be linen.

Assuming that you need a loose weave, so that there is room to push the wool fibres in, but not as coarse as tradional sacking I think you should search for linen scrim.

Thank you @BrendaP!  The picture title is needle-felting-on-hessian but I do agree that it looks more like linen.

Now I'm off to explore those links.   :)
