Seeking simple inspiration please :)
« on: August 17, 2019, 12:43:10 PM »
I have the indigo blue quilt top finished, but waiting until next month to buy the wadding. So until then I'm planning two quilts as gifts for my granddaughters.

* So two single quilts.

*They are 12 and 9 years old now.

* colours - I don't have much contact with the family (but would still like to gift them something lasting) so I don't really know what colours or patterns they would like, but I've seen photos of them with the ends of their hair dyed - one purple and one pink so incorporating using those?

* I'd like to make the same pattern twice, using the two different colourways.

* I'd like to use at least some pre-cut fabric packs, so something incorporating 5 or 10 inch squares perhaps?

Does anyone have any ideas of fairly simple but effective patterns I could make? I'm not very skilled yet, and don't go for tiny pieces  :)  or complex quilting.

Thank you to anyone who can make suggestions

I am thinking about the "Hip to be square" pattern by Jordans Fabric - they made it in grey but it would work well in different colourways. It's piece are like the courthouse steps I've already done, but in a different sequence.
A possible  :)

I think your idea of doing purple for one and pink for the other to match their hair in the photo is excellent!
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.

@LeilaMay don’t sell yourself short. I have a lovely example of your patchwork and it’s very good.

Often the simple schemes are the most effective.

I love your idea of colour matching to hair colours.

??? I think you might be muddling me with someone else? I don't think I've made patchwork for anyone else?  :)

Thank you all for the ideas  :)

I could ask about their colour preferences I guess, I'd like to think I'll be getting it right, and making something they'll enjoy for a while. So I could email and ask :)

So many patterns, I get confused and lost without some guidance LOL

I mean I felt rather good - but had to confess that it really wasn't me  LOL

No worries, and I'm sure Lillian will laugh

Best wishes

This one of my favourite easy patterns. It is practically all straight lines and so is the quilting - I just quilt 1 inch apart in the ribbons.

The pattern says to use width of fabric strips which is fine if you have them. However I’ve found that one fat quarter per ribbon will be plenty with some left over.

Just be careful with directional patterns - these will have to be horizontal ribbons or avoided altogether. I’ve made a couple of these now and can cut the pieces in one afternoon and piece the top in a day so quite quick.

It's very nice of you to make quilts for them  <3 but I would re-Think the colour choice, because favourite colours (especially for hairs!) Can change quickly in their age...  ><
