Jersey 369g/m2 - too thick?
« on: September 11, 2019, 14:06:16 PM »
I`ve been looking at this but am rather put off by reading that it is 369g/m2:

https://www.stoffstil.co.uk/fabrics/jersey/cotton-jersey/stretch-jersey-navy-w-crane-and-flowers

I know I had some nice t-shirt fabric in the summer which was only 200g/m2, so am I right in thinking 369g/m2 would be too thick for a long-sleeved top?

Does anyone know of a guide to the weight of jerseys? i.e what different weights are suitable for?

No idea about that weight statistic - too many numbers in it for me. Cotton is heavier than polyester though so that may make a difference?

I think that is a light sweatshirt weight jersey.
The heavy stretch jersey I bought to make a skirt is 555g/sqm.
It’s very pretty, and recommended for ‘tops’.  I think it will be fine.

That sounds pretty thick to me to be honest.  I found a website : http://www.customapparelsource.net/what-is-the-definition-of-gsm-when-purchasing-fabric/   which might help a bit (probably not much).

That`s helpful @Nevis5 - after reading that I think it would be too thick.  I can`t cope with tops that are too warm - I`d rather have a thinner one that I can add layers too.

I would request a sample.

I always check the weight where possible but it can be a bit hit and miss even then. I have two pieces of fabric, one lovely and thick and woolie coat weight and one much thinner kind of suiting stuff ( sorry for the technical jargon  :S) and they both weigh he same.  8)

I notice that all the stretch jersey on that website seems to be at least 350 gsm and some of it is over 500 and still recommended for tops and baby clothes. I recently made a warm jacket from some really thick sweatshirt fleece said to be 280 gsm. You'd wonder do they make these figures up!

On that basis I'd be inclined to order a sample and I'd be very interested to know what your verdict is.

@Ploshkin is a fan of Stoff and Stil so she might be able to shed some light on this. Their stuff is gorgeous but I have to stay off the website for reasons of bankruptcy.  :S

I've had cotton jersey from them but have no idea what the weight is.  It is good quality though.
