I'm a hammer user too    although DH rudely asked for it back when he saw me using it to hammer in rivets.  It's his rock hammer from his climbing/geological days and to be honest it's not that brilliant now but it still does the job for me.

Ive got a set of pattern weights that cost nothing, and I love them. We had some roofing lead scraps in the garage, which DH cut into small squares and rectangles, then covered with Electrical tape to stop the lead marking or catching on fabric. They do the job very well, as they are flat and easy to cut around if placed near the edge  of the pattern piece.
