Reversible jacket (2 sides of same fabric)
« on: September 16, 2019, 09:07:41 AM »
I'd like to make this fabric into a reversible jacket/coat (lightweight)

I'm thinking simple style, lapped seams, pockets opposite each other, no obvious closure.

Any other tips for making reversible garments from your own experience?

Either use the type of open ended zip with a pull that flips over to either side (the teeth will have to be visible) or buttonholes and buttons on each side.

Better still just edge to edge without any fastening and bind all around.

What about tabs/loops sewn into the seam and buttons inside and out?

I've wondered about this before so I am watching with interest! I would think the closure will be the biggest challenge - I would be inclined to go for a tie belt with belt loops on both sides, but that's probably only because I can't get my head around anything else.

I like the fabric, it's going to be very smart and useful for the autumn days.
Could you do something with magnetic fastenings? Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have been researching it a little and found a few options, which mostly include binding the seams with bias binding, doing flat fell seams or rolled hem finishes, Flat felling the armhole/sleeve seam looks very tricky, so perhaps a Kimono style dropped sleeve would be easier.

I have two overlockers (sergers) and the Bernina does a beautiful rolled hem, so that might be a nice but easy way to tackle it.

I bought this pattern in May 2019. Haven't had chance to use it yet but it is reversible and I just love the jackets made up from this pattern too. Just wondering if you have ever seen this one?

Hi @Lizzy777 I've not seen that specific one before but I can see how that could work in a reversible style. Its seems to be a variation on a Kimono, so I might have something I could adapt.

@SewRuthieSews

Yes, you're right and the line drawings show it is a variation on the Kimono. There's been some nice makes, in different fabrics, though, using the pattern and I thought it may be of some interest as it is a reversible pattern. Nice to see all the different makes using this pattern. Might give you some ideas too?  https://www.instagram.com/explore/tags/wikstenkimono/?hl=en

I quite liked this one in the pink on this blog. Similar in weight to the fabric you want to use for a jacket? I'm not promoting the blog at all, nor have I read through it I just liked the tweedy effect fabric used.

I may make the shorter version when I get through some health issues I am dealing with at present.

Will be interesting to see your fabric made up once you have decided on your pattern design. I like the fabric you are going to use too.

Hi Lizzy, as far as I can see the Wiksten is reversible because it is lined. Ie it is 2 jackets sewn together.
I want to use both sides of the same fabric so would need a slightly different approach.

I think I'll probably use the Kinder cardigan from Wendy Ward's books as I already have that traced, but add a wider neckband.

hi Ruthie, the Kinder cardigan looks good too. I looked at the reviews for it after you posted and  noticed you have made it before  ;). Great choice. Will look forward to seeing it made up in the lovely fabric you have for it.

I've mulled over this and plan to have a foldback single layer cuff and collar using the selvedge (as its quite fun).
The idea is these would be stitched on the opposite way, so when folded back would match.
Having laid it out on the fabric I see I have plenty (the Kinder Cardigan is quite efficient fabric wise), so I could have it thigh length, knee length or even longer, the thigh length ones tend to get worn more than the coat style though so think I will go with that. It is NOT going to be the BRIDGE piece in SWAKOP though as it doesn't connect to the sage print at all.

I saw a wonderful reversible coat on Pattern review.  She used a simple pattern to great effect.

Lee that is beautifully executed!
It is not a style that appeals to me particularly.
I note she says she trimmed the seam allowances and then applied bias tape over all the seams, quite an undertaking.
The fabric has been parked for the moment whilst I finish off my SWAKOP and I'm slightly unsure whether the reverse is pretty enough to warrant the effort of making the garment fully reversible.
