An Homage to Bad Costumes
« on: November 26, 2019, 17:38:48 PM »
We went over to Vancouver to watch DD1 dance.  For us costumers, who sometimes feel that our work is fleeting, one choreographer created a work to reflect the dancers previous dance performance experiences - favourite moves, most embarassing moment on stage, worst costume, best costume and their transition from ballet to contemporary.  But the most hysterical parts were listening to the dancers speak about their worst costume ever (we had been instructed to laugh if we found it funny).  Near the end, they all put on old recital costumes and proceeded to improv wildly - the one guy in the group was wearing a hot pink figure skating dress with a black lace overlay that was several sizes too small.  A girl who lives in Vancouver provided the old costumes.  Bad costuming never dies - it lives on in the dancer's memories.

To be honest, one that I made but didn't design almost made the cut as DD1's worst costume.  Fortunately, she decided on another to describe as the dance company director who designed the costume came to watch.

Bumping up an old thread rather than starting a new related thread:

I performed and/or taught Middle Eastern Dance for forty years. In that time I saw some remarkable costumes. For anyone interested in the do and don't of ME costume, dancer Amulya's site,

Link removed in accordance with TSP's membership agreement

is a fine resource. I am happy to say none of my own costumes ended up on Amulya's site, but whether that was luck or skill remains to be seen. ;)

Oh, dear, I have erred and I am sorry! I thought it was just commercial links that were verboten. I won't do it again.

There is a bad costume thread on orientaldancer.net called, I believe, "Thought-provoking costumes." Features professional costumes made by people who ought to know better, and not those created by the loving hands of amateurs. Thereon we discuss "can this costume be saved and how," but sometimes a cossie is simply beyond help.
