I've never make a sewn hat for a baby but there are hundreds of knitted baby hats over on Ravelry.

Thanks @BrendaP
I found a free knitting pattern for baby hat and I also found a free SIRDAR baby cardigan pattern!  0_0

Lots - I inherited my mother's folder of patterns when she gave up knitting.  Let me know if you're interested in that kind of thing and I can send you a scan.

@HenriettaMaria
Thank you for your kind offer, but I think I'm sorted out now and have just ordered some wool.
When I'm looking for other ideas, then I'll get back in touch.

Re: Need pattern for baby hat - FINISHED!

Here's the Baby Hat finally finished (my first time "knitting in the round" and using 3 needles).
I think its too big for a baby, but maybe will fit the little girl its intended for when she's a toddler. 0_0  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

That's an interesting embellishment with the woven threads.  Is it part of the knitting or are the threads woven in afterwards?

@Ploshkin it's part if the pattern and is described as a butterfly effect.  You bring the  yarn to the front of the work, slip 5 stitches on to the next needle then carry on knitting; on the next row you pick up the threads which creates a no x of loop effect.
I  can post the pattern link if you are interested.

@Ploshkin   Here's the link - the pattern is free on ravelry.com:

(Unfortunately, my version has a few errors, but I would knit it again as I realise now where I went wrong :()

Many thanks - I don't like changing colours when I'm knitting but I do like knitting cables and interesting textures.

I used Sirdar Snuggly Crofter Baby Fair Isle effect DK to knit the hat.
