QAYG Tutorial?
« on: December 31, 2019, 11:32:08 AM »
Hi All,

I purchased a Jinny Beyer quilt kit to make for my in-laws a couple of years ago.  I have done a couple of blocks, but my lovely DS1 moved my sorted piles of fabric and messed up my system and I haven't been able to face sorting through it again.  However, I am determined to get it done in 2020 and give it to them at Christmas next year.  (Eek, did I put that online for the world to see?!?!?!?!)   My trusty Janome died last year and I haven't been able to replace her so won't be able to quilt it as a whole quilt and I won't be able to afford to send it off the be quilted either, so I'm considering QAYG but don't really know anything about it (I am a novice quilter; clothes are my thing!)  Please could you recommend any good online tutorials (ideally with pictures) that tell you exactly how to do it.  Help this girl achieve her goal (see what I did there - sharing the responsibility for getting this quilt done  ;) :P :P)

Thanks all.

Hi Missie, I am no pro here, but there are loads of online tutorials for QAYG. i have been looking at them myself as I am tempted to give it a try. I particularly love the look of this system:

Look for tutorials from The Gourmet Quilter.
QAYG is easier if you do it with sashing between the blocks.
Triumph of hope over experience :D

If you want to do it without sashing, I've used this method.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNbernqwDtE&t=266s

Three ways of QAYG without sashing.

https://www.instructables.com/id/Quilt-As-You-Go-Quilt/
This method has you join the backing by hand.

This method has seams in the wadding which could lead to bulky joins, though she insists not!

is the way I did my wedding pressie quilt which has FMQ squiggles all over it.

As I said at the time the video really is a lot of waffle, you can skip the first 4 minutes of the first part

Essentially what I did was:
1, Make blocks and join them into strips.  Cut strips of backing same size as pieced strips.
2, Sandwich and quilt the first strip making sure that there's at least an inch unquilted along the side to be joined.
3, Trim the wadding in the first strip to the stitching line (1/4" short of the edge of the strips.)
4, Join first pieced strip to the second pieced strip.
5, Join first backing strip to the second backing strip.
6, Spread it out over the floor and flip the second pieced strip back.
7, Carefully slide in another strip of wadding so that it touches the first strip of wadding.
8, Turn the second pieced strip back over the wadding, smooth it out and pin it down well.
9, Quilt the second strip taking the stitching over the join in places but again leave an inch or so at the other side unquilted.

Repeat from step 3 as often as necessary.  In the last strip quilt right up to the edge.
