@Manuela it's the name given to the garment ladies wore in the late Victorian / Edwardian era with a skirt. Normally with a structured high collar, cuffs, and front or back buttons. Like this one.

I've been cutting out the pattern pieces for my grey/black flannel gingham shirt. There will be a few stretch goals for me in this project, as I want to make a tower placket and cuffs on the sleeve, and my own TNT self drafted woven top pattern doesn't include an opening cuff at all! So I will get to learn how to make a tower placket, and also have to figure out where on the sleeve to have the placket slash... I plan on trying out the placket as a sample on some scrap fabric first, as it looks sort of complicated...

@indigotiger  I had to look up tower placket! Hope you find it easy  to do.
I learnt a nice technique by unpicking a bought shirt sleeve.  It starts as a continuous binding on a rectangular opening and folds in two goes until it ends up looking like a  tower placket, but there are no cut ends inside - much better for an untidy person like me.  I have no idea what that would be called or I would post a link.  No doubt someone on here does know!

@Sonatine, that would be perfectly fine for the contest  ;)

@indigotiger I posted  an excellent tutorial for a shirt sleeve placket in the Tutorials section of the forum.  It was posted on 26th July 2017 and the link is a few posts into the thread because I had trouble linking it.

I'll try a link here but if it doesn't work you should be able to find it in the Tutorials area.

What a fabulous tutorial @Ploshkin. She manages to speak to you like an idiot without being condescending! A rare talent and a very easy to follow tute!  :loveit:

I'm getting closer and closer to attempting a sleevie...  :o

That's next on my list, shirt sleeve plackets, and I too have used the same tutorial.  However, IIRC, the Vogue shirt I'm making has a one piece placket, we'll see.  It shouldn't be too bad because up to now, the fabric I'm using has been very well behaved.

@Manuela, disqualify if it doesn't meet the criteria. I'm joining into these challenges for fun but want to meet the rules.

Ann's Entry #1

Lori's Lacy Blouse with Machine Embroidery was a test pattern for a doll pattern designer. The machine embroidery was a big challenge as two of the files would not work for us. I spent several days in January trying to help the designer but to no avail. In the end I used the lace design which worked.

The machine embroidery is done using sewing thread and a fine needle which may be why there were problems with some of the files. The blouse is made from quilting cotton and was an easy test pattern. The print was chosen to give the blouse a Victorian look once the lace was added.

The blouse pattern was done like most other blouse patterns. The front which has the button placket on it was serged, turned back 1/4" and the placket topped stiched down. The button placket was added like other blouse patterns. The neck is finished with bias tape and the collar is zig zag stitched down. It works fine for this blouse though I do know of people who do this on their clothing.

This blouse was time consuming as I spent a lot of time testing the embroidery. The blouse was easy to sew though I did finish all the seams and puzzled over instructions. Part of being a pattern tester.

Sorry @Ann, but that’s a dress not a shirt. Very cute though  :loveit:

I think it is a blouse and skirt, not a dress, but perhaps @Ann can confirm this.

@Manuela, it’s a skirt and blouse. I’ll do pictures of the blouse tomorrow.

@Sonatine: for the purposes of this contest, we need to very careful with terminology since a google image search for 'shirtwaist' produced these results.

My definition of a shirt is this.  Anything else is a blouse in my books.

@UttaRetch yes, although you've added the term 'dress' to your search! Hardly surprising that you get dresses then.

That's me put off from entering, I was excited that there was a competition I could enter with a historical garment but oh well.

@Sonatine, my sincere apologies.  I slightly misread your thread and have given people a bum steer.  I didn't mean to throw anyone under the bus.
