February's BOM - Courthouse Steps
« on: February 01, 2020, 09:30:11 AM »
Well here it is, the first BOM of the 2020!

There will be Twelve 12" blocks for this years BOM:
Some months you will have two blocks to make and some only one.

In October I will guide you through layering and quilting your blocks
and in November I will take you through  assembling them, using a QAYG method,
into a fabulous lap or cot sized quilt (or even a series of comfy cushions.)

And everyone who finishes the year with a completed quilt (or full series of cushions)
will receive an exclusive The Sewing Place Prize Winners Badge

I have chosen a monochrome theme with pops of colour for my quilt,
you may choose whatever colourway/theme you like ...
Brights, plains, patterns, pastels, neutrals ... the choice is yours!

For our first month I have chosen probably
the most recognised and traditional Patchwork Block there is ...
and a very good starter block for any new recruits to The Darkside.

FEBRUARY

As ever when you click on the link,  select the first picture,
and click on the i icon to bring up the destructions
on the right side of your screen.

Do read through The Basic Basics Thread before you start.

Please post pics of your blocks each month and at the end of the year I will compose an album for the archives

Yay, I’ve been waiting for this since Boxing Day all morning.

I was planning to dip in and out of this, but now think I‘m going to commit to joining in.

I love the black, white and red but I have already made two quilts in that colour way, so am going to step out of my comfort zone.

Yay! I have been waiting for my very first BOM - am I right in thinking it is called a "log cabin" block? I have done one, but a small one with only two or three strips, I think. Looking forward to doing this. I have no idea what colours will be in it though....rushes off to inspect stash ... mmm and ahhhh and end up needing an expensive  essential trip to the fabric shop/s...
If you see me with a seam ripper, now is not a good time

@Lisalou1965 @Lowena it's the first block I ever made and it's dead easy. The hard part as well as choosing colour, fabric etc is deciding on a layout if/when you have several blocks. Thankfully mine were done at a workshop and made up into Christmas tree.  :loveit:

@wrenkins I am not keen on the look of this block, nor its friend Courthouse Steps. Mainly because I was not a very accurate cutter of strips...... I'm ok now so will give it a go.
@Iminei are we disclosing our colours or keeping them a secret to the end??

Its not my favourite block at all either ... But I'm doing a back to basics traditional string of tuts this year,
so its not about  what I like ...

Its also an simple introduction into cutting and piecing and can be a very effective block for a quilt.
Google Log cabin quilts and see which colourways you like and choose from there (I promise I wont tell!)

Keep measuring and squaring up your units at each step and you'll be fine.
If you find your 1/4" seam is a bit dodgy cut the strips 1/4" wider and trim them to the 1 1/4" when you are squaring up after you sew each log ... A heinous crime I know but I won't tell the QP!

And please POST PICS!

@Lowena  ... Glad you are joining in ... No secrets this year and no competition ... Everyone who finishes 2020 with a completed quilt (or cushion set) will receive a badge.

I was thinking that I have a couple of jelly rolls which would be ideal for this... then I realised that there would be no way of matching the colours for the other blocks!

Keep measuring and squaring up your units at each step and you'll be fine.

'Tis the only way it will work for me!   :|
I might look as though I'm talking to you, but inside my head I'm sewing.
