I've only managed January's so far, so I think I might just concentrate on the Mystery quilt and gibe the BOMs a miss  :ninja:

Just a couple of questions before I start, if you don't mind, Iminei.  Does the background fabric need to be a solid?  Do you have any advise for choosing a focus fabric, if using colour?

No not necessarily; a blender, a mottled, a small tone on tone, a small patterned ...
you want the spirals to sing and shine !

Do you have any advise for choosing a focus fabric, if using colour?

I struggled hugely with this for my workshop;
I bought some batik especially, but didn't like it enough and found when rummaging through my batiks the perfect one...which I had just enough of. In fact one of the 4" squares was two cut off pieces joined!! but I defy you to find the two triangles cut from it!!!

You could use a dark of the colour chosen ie...reds...choose the darkest mottled red you can find (thinking Makower here) or a B& non directional

Slap some pics up if you need an opinion!

I'm thinking of orange.  What do you think?
Could the focus fabric be blue?

Photo 1 with the blue strips probably would have worked if the black and red swapped places.  It needs the darker one in the 'ribbon' for the illusion of a shadow in the twist.
Your colours are lovely.

Lovely stuff! I wont post it into The BOM HOF until its a finished piece, OK?

BUT remember the 1/2 squares of the twist will only be on the top and bottom of each block, I think you may have those on the side in some of your blocks!

Its a bugger to figure out until it clicks into place...

Yes, If I were to use a feature fabric, in say Red, I would make the twist a (much) darker red or Red pattern.

I think the fact that the blue was 'darker' than the red is why the second pic works better!

With the Spiral Child, I chose a batik that had a lot of the colours I was using for the twist.

And, as you can see, in the B & W version I have chosen a black with white outlined stars for the twist,
so not quite a solid...

but as ever there is going to be a twist on this particular Twist and Twirl
