I started making McCall’s 7948 today...

... using this fabric

I fitted the muslin yesterday and I am glad I did it, because:
- the gathering width for the top tier in view C/D is way too much and looks unflattering, when I do this later on I’ll use the pattern piece for view A/B and shorten it as desired
- I had to make the shoulders 2.5cm (1”) narrower, and I don’t have narrow shoulders
- I’m a D cup and needed to do a 1” FBA - I do a smallish bust dart, the front piece is too short to pivot it anywhere

I’ll update my progress here (and some variations ). The current version won’t have tiers, and I gather the skirt piece instead of doing the pleats.

Interesting fabric.  Look forward to seeing this.  I always found the main pattern companies had wide shoulders.  I do have narrow ones and slightly sloping so was always a faff.

Other than Vogue, I always find US patterns to have wide shoulders but particularly so with McCalls.

Superb fabric!

That’s the big riddle here... I had several ‘and now for something completely different’ moments when it came to that...

Progress - couture meets bedsheet...
I underlined the top bit, and the only thing I found was an old bedsheet I put aside to make muslins...

@annieeg asked about a FBA on this pattern, here is the bust dart I created as the result of an 1” FBA

@Bodgeitandscarper wanted to know how I deal with the border, I decided to use it at the top (as seen here) and at the hem. This way the above the waist seam can lay flat as the chunky crochet is not entrapped there.

That's an excellent use of the border pattern and good placement too. Also, you've made the dart horizontal to avoid disruption to the pattern, am I right?

Skirt done and pinned onto the dress form , still needs gathering. But first I need to decide how to finish the armholes. Any planning with this fabric is impossible due to the nature of the crochet lace.. Initially I wanted to bind the armholes with the blue bit of the fabric, but the chambray is too flimsy for that....
Time for a glass of wine methinks.

Could you consider silk organza  bias strips for your armholes?
