Title: The Sewing Place’s Year-Long UFO challenge 1.01.2019 - 31.12.2019
Post by: Manuela on December 31, 2018, 23:40:03 PM
Welcome to The Sewing Place’s year-long UFO challenge. The aim of this challenge is to support and motivate each other while completing as many UFOs as you can. We’ll hopefully run it until December 31st, there may or may not be a little prize for the person who finished the most UFOs. Anything goes, be it a quilt, a garment, an upholstery project, a bag..... lets do it, get them out and get them done!

Here is the UFO tracker

Existing UFOs:

Completed UFOs:

UFOs still to tackle:

While you don’t need to fill in admit to the first and the last number  ;), it would be great if everyone could keep track of how many UFOs they completed.
Please post a before and after picture.

Get up and tackle those UFOs!

I like this challenge.  I have only two unfinished garments to deal with as far as I can recall.  But, I have a handful of quilts in various stages of completion so it would be nice to get them completed and off the fabric shelves.  I'll have to do an inventory later.

This is the challenge for me.  Thank you. Manuela.

Existing UFOs: 9 but I may find a few more smaller projects
Completed UFOs: 0
UFOs still to tackle: 9

1. DS1's disappearing 9 patch - currently being quilted.
2. Jan Hassard's Spirals - begun at a workshop over a year ago.  Has been worked on recently but a long way to go.
3. TSP Mystery Quilt - I love it but indecision over size brought it to a halt.
4. Swoon houses
5. Katharine Guerrier's Scrappy Houses quilt - begun when I was new and enthusiastic.  Some blocks are too big.  May become several smaller projects.
6. Stack and slash quilt - needs sashing.
7. MIL's quilt - not my MIL.  Bought at a car boot sale from someone whose mother-in-law had died.  It was short and wide and I took it apart to integrate my own fabrics.
8. 4 patch chain quilt - begun at a BOM class.  I hate it but have spent too much money on it to throw it in the mud and stomp on it.
9.  Jelly roll race - begun 4-5 years ago.  Only needs binding and has for 4-5 years.

This sounds as if it was designed for me  :|
Are 'UFOs still to tackle' ones where you have the components, fabrics and patterns etc, but have never started?

These as well as anything you started and then put aside to ‘marinate’ and somehow didn’t go back to finish...
So, basically
    Existing UFOs
  - Finished UFO
= UFOs still to tackle

What Sue said...
At what point does a warehouse sized stash with plans and pictures and some sorting and folding become a UFO?  :o  :|

My gardening trews with the back to front pocket never got hemmed.
Hems required for check trews.
Assembling blocks for a log cabin quilt made after a workshop in 1996 (maybe). How do you decide which layout?!??!
A chunky winter skirt that started simple but the lady in the shop complicated it to the point of UFOness.
Curtains for a house that I no longer live in but could be adapted for this one.
Hems on bedroom curtains x 3 pairs  :| (including the ones that are up!!!!).  :|  :'(
This is all from the comfort of my sofa. I hate to think what the list would look like if I went and hoked in the cupboards.  :(

@wrenkins & @Sewingsue, the U& F in UFO stand for UnFinished, so to count as an UFO some sort of work should have been done on that piece of fabric.... Having ideas ans folding stash fabric is not enough  :)

Thanks @Manuela
Still gives me a few items - but I think most are going to be on the Dark Side.
Garments are definitely in the 'got fabric and patterns and good intentions' category (oops, that means they could be SWAKOP candidates).

Runs away and hides.

Is there a beginners guide to ‘sewing jargon’ section on the site anywhere?

I’ve gathered what the UF in UFO stands for and guessing the O is object?
SWAKOP sounds a bit scary, like a secret police raid on your fabric stash.
(I dream of one day owning a stash of fabric...)

Unfortunately for me, a lot of you talk in a secret code that mere googling doesn’t always assist with. A pinned post or a ‘Beginners start here’ topic would be incredibly helpful. I had to look up ‘fussy cutting’ a while ago and it wasn’t at all what I imagined it might be!  :o :o

...I’m now wondering if this already exists and I’m just proving my numpty credentials by not having spotted it previously... :S  :|

Don't do that, dear @WildAtlanticWay .  You're Billy Loads-of-new-mates.

You'll soon be fluent in sewing-forum-speak.

SWAP is a thing on other sites (Sew with a plan) where people sew garments that fit a certain criteria.  SWAKOP is our version of that (sew with a kind of plan) because we like to make our own rules.

@WildAtlanticWay ... There are no stupid questions, if baffled, just ask!

These are just from my memory .... and there's plenty of things I have bought fabric for and planned but not yet started like (to my eternal shame) The TSP Challenge Royale and the Gourmet Quilters Star Quilt, both of which I might well look at again ... the stumbling block was colour choices in both.

So many beautiful quilts, @Iminei .  I love the quilting on the Nov BOM quilt.  When you did the star swap, I was still lurking.  I wanted to join in but was too shy.  (How times have changed!)  Hopefully, we'll do something like this again.

Looking forward to seeing your finishes.

I think I may be the odd one out - I don't think I have any UFOs  :o
I have a current work in progress (well, two actually), but I either finish things or chuck 'em out!  I have quite a few lots of plans/ideas that have the fabric and (choice of) pattern, but they are still in my head, not started.  In fact, I haven't done much sewing recently cos my wardrobe is full.
Do I sound a bit strange to you peeps?

Only 2013? I'm sure I've got some that have marinated longer than that...cough...I'm just grateful we don't need to list all of them in the beginning and work against that list. I'm just assuming as I work my way through them more will come to the surface. Isn't that the way with these things?

@Manuela I'm adding another category to my tally list: chucked UFOs. I decided that I'm going to need a criterion for getting rid of ones if I don't want to work on them now. For every one I complete I can keep one for "later", but if I do I also have to get rid of one. Something like that. For me at this point removal is almost as good as completion. Both equal fewer UFO's.

UFO - I have a bird design cot quilt top, needs backing, wadding and binding.
I have two thirds of a flying horse quilt for a single bed. Need to buy fabric for.
And I have a collection of shapes on my working wall which will be ongoing, more of a plaything than a serious contender for completion, ever.

That's it, as far as I can remember. List might change when I open cupboard doors and actually look.

Hmm not sure how much time I’ll have for sewing but would be nice to try get some things ticked off my list.

UFO’s:7

- 2x cushion covers using Mays BOM weave block- fronts not quite finished let alone quilting and finishing.
- nautical quilt for baby bump, now plan to use November’s BOM block for this.
- lap/cot quilt using Septembers BOM block in batiks.
- lone star cushion cover in batiks.
- trousers for my husband- mockup has been made for over a year and lost count of how many years he’s been pestering me for them.
- finish Christmas quilt I discovered I’d made the top for while I was hunting Christmas fabrics for BOM decembers Santa.
- curtains for spare room- I’ve had the fabric and supplies for a couple of years now.

I probably won’t get the trousers, curtains and maybe the Christmas quilt done as bigger projects but the rest I’d like to.

I have a jacket in a dark olive green half done. I've had a couple of goes at it which has progressed it, but am not quite sure what I'd wear with it, maybe navy bottoms, or make some new ones in a co-ordinating striped trouser fabric?

Based on when I sewed up and blogged the trousers and skirt from the same fabric it might have been as long as 10 years ago (they were summer 2008) so maybe I cut out the jacket afterwards to make a suit look?
I have no idea what happened to the trousers and skirt (probably donated) and doubt they would fit me now if I still had them.... (perhaps they are bagged in the loft for reuse).

Anyway if I do a photo of where i am up to perhaps I can move it forwards later in the year.

I have been thinking about this all day and the ones I can remember (without venturing into the chaos left behind in my sewing room from making an evening dress) are:

Black faux fur cape/throw. Bought the fake fur from a Joel and Sons sale several years ago.  Got as far as pinning the pattern pieces to it, deciding that the pattern wouldn't work die to the grain of the fabric, found another pattern, which was missing a piece but drafted  new one, needed them to shorten it as didn't have enough fabric and decided it needed lining. Got as far as cutting out the lining when undecided i wouldn't get it finished in time for the event I was making it for.

Black silk velvet dress.a pain to hem, I can't get the neckline to lay flat and it doesn't fit right at the waist.

Turquoise chiffon smakeskin dress.  Made as a wearable toil but a bit floaty for most uses

Blue and brown devore velvet dress.  Not sure why abandoned. But remember zip

Pink and black demin dress.  Too small. Not sure how I managed to do that as it was a pattern I had done before.

Brown and blue cotton dress. Lovely print but I wasn't happy with the pattern matching.

Brown wool jacket. Started as a semi chanel jacket. Method didn't work.

Burgundy top. Started as a recycling competition entry.  Abandoned when the competition closed.

Stretch top in blue / green.  Started two summers ago. Wanted to make a lot of ruffles. Decided though that it was more christmassy than summery and put aside for smore summer thing.  Think it uis half sewn

Black silk velvet top.  Just needs hemming?

Cotton top with skulls. Cut out but got no further.

That's 11. I really, really ought to so the cape and the velvet dress as they represent a considerable amount of money spent and would clear a lot of space. But it is more tempting to do the tops as i a have occasions to wear those.

This is all an awful waste of fabric so i must make myself finish some of them. But the husband thinks inshpuld be repairing the pockets on a pair of his jeans!

I delved into the nether regions of the sewing room and found thirteen of them!

Then I spent most of this evening adding photos to my website in the hope that making it public will spur me on to finishing a few of them. >:)

Have a look at http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/sewing/ufos.htm (http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/sewing/ufos.htm)

I dug out my birdie quilt top, have cut wadding and backing material. After lunch will press and pin, then head to the sewing machine.

I should be able to find something hanging around to finish. There is a quilt top languishing in the stash somewhere. And a dress to be topstitched and hemmed.  Do alterations count?

Ooops, thank you for alerting me....

Ah, I might be able to enter this. I thought we only had a month. I have an advent calendar for GS2 which I wasn't able to complete between his birth on 17/12 and Christmas. It just needs his name & birthdate embroidering on the back.

I forgot    :S   about this thread. Is there a way we can keep a proper record of the UFO's that we have and finish ???

Well I finished Novembers BOM Quilt, I might haul Elvis out and embroider the name of it, (which is SUNRISE, by the way Lowena)

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/CfDDxMiEaZH_GIlk5tpN37xGYkq82je-xwcRJWUfzSLHWOsVTCmFgjjUXdKh6Q9LVx5FezOzVZO_R_xNIzdrKheJ9S4JAwa-0wTEX0hwSlhOqxyalVSh-vF6Z1V0e4dwWYgof1ZpQPLYOk4KWG6XRZJhEJ5TuvSriXCHl9JYIX8oEgoQIqVOEebic_-Oz-AOwX9jU887reP69IA8ioyIlCzg3eg6f3QFTozZsbB8mEYrjg0RsJoWG5CbJTDmqVkAj6w9BG8wdaFWdPtDCs8KJ9hZb93AhJLRukimJ4nDgaeonWguQtPUjY0MZ4oDAP3eUMQYlosq26GSdfybBWFUv8SC0js7IdnqyYoznlTgc10So0-sW6n7GLRyP0MIEU-K12VLGMLo1VbiuJy4D4IeDTDaL-sQOo8XgzOg9KWzQkNx9DzyAywq6xTwuqMSAPtZcMJLOAm_MSGVfNosF0wVWA-q8SwI2edNpFQFy5Vb_G3WGfsd-vGYlOevJgaiiAgnpYeH0WE6V484kBAkjBRttL0YyhCCuONAL0dH2PA_zCznBEGmndfzgU31fzh9xH4UsTqNgmMO6HYyxnnsHRoNksvg_ts60rXS6JLBt1Zd2n8XpnBcXDzz5UAtGdZrg5HrcEU_UGYzk_N6DMWOtK2aA9HoXTeambKSPaKp_Nub1GSjwJiyEU48GE9ykzFBy4hR-x0NfBukQNjJ=w955-h713-no)

So thats one down!

Novembers BOM top ... Completed!
TSP Star block swap ... Backing needs making, layering, quilting and binding
A Good Year for the Roses quilt ... the blasted butterflies need over embroidering, then binding
(I fear this will never be finished)
Illusion block quilt (remember that) ... Backing, Layering, QAYG, Binding
100 shades of grey quilt ... Fabric needs buying to finish the top, backing, layering, quilting and binding
The 2019 Coverlet ... In progress
Jan Hassards Strips Galore ... finish piecing, layer, back and bind   :[   :S
The Temperature Quilt ... To be finished in 2020!

I've totted up that there are SIX UFO's that I can possibly finish before the end of the year; One every two months .. Surely thats doable??? (were it not for the Blasted Butterflies quilt Grrrr)

@Lowena To identify them.
Try to talk to another sewing friend about your projects and then you have to start every sentence with "Do you remeber the quilt, I started 3 moths ago with this strange colours...."  :S :P

It's easier to say "I have started a project with ... idea and that's why i gave him that ... name" And everybody knows, what you are talking about. ;)

I can't understand why anyone would name a project, but , it's probably just me  :(

Umm, we also name our cars and often our houses. And I know of a lot of people right here with names for their sewing machines. I don't give my quilts  personal names, like Bert or Rebecca.

I drive Monte, a Chevy Monte Carlo and OH drives an Infiniti FX by name of Rusty. Rusty is a lovely burnt copper color.

The house is Chateau Nene.  :toast:

PS: Read a shoe box some time. Years ago a friend got a job at a shoe company and part of the job was to name the shoes. She had an awful time at first. We all got shoes named after us that year.

I don't name houses, vehicles or garments but I don't mind if others do :-)
I do name my seasonal colour based sewing collections but they are pretty obvious like Autumn Berries or Summer Seas.

My current UFO that I look at and do nothing with is 'that olive green wool jacket'. Sometime this year I'll do something with it, honest.

but I've neglected to update it!  :S
So far: Aggie has a new outer skin, the camisole top has new straps, the cushion has a middle and I'm making good progress with the scrappy quilt.

TSP Star block swap ... Backing needs making, layering, quilting and binding
It's older than TSP - we did that swap from the old forum.  I finished mine soon after receiving the blocks  and this photo is date stamped 02 November 2015.

@sewmuchmore The roses quilt is lovely but I definitely bit off more than I could chew with those damned butterflies! I thought they would add something to the quilt but they just looked flat and C*** so I thought I could over embroider them ...

Since I'm studying for a language exam and losing weight I won't be sewing anything but UFOs or from non-garment stash for the foreseeable future.  These are the UFOs off the top of my head.

Existing UFOs: 5
Completed UFOs: 0
UFOs still to tackle: 5

UFOs:
Kochi Kimono in snake lizard print - needs band and hemming
Cutting Line Discover Something Novel pants - they are huge and need major taking in which involves removing topstitching
Quilt for niece #1 - needs binding (and has for well over 10 years)  ><
Quilt for niece #2 - partial top ... not really sure what it needs but it will take some time to complete
Lap quilt gold/purple: top complete, needs quilting and binding

I may have other quilt tops in various states but that will require a reorg of the shelves most likely

Will I do any of this?  Who knows.

Next is Spirals.  It's almost in one piece but then, all those decisions to make - borders, backing, how to quilt, binding.  It may be some time.

That's great @Pearl ! I love doing Disappearing 9 Patch for some reason. Soothing and rather simple to piece, a little precision cutting (whack whack  :D), rearrange to your liking and sew them back together. The red & black are quite dramatic. Does the Son like it?

I've made a start at doing something with The UFO Collection. I bought a 20 yard roll of 90" wide low loft cotton quilt batting this week. It's rather nice stuff. It was such a good sale; 70 % off the single by the yard price by buying it prepacked this way.

So no excuse not to finish some of these tops. I'm not sure if Lightsiders know about quilts. There are two parts to a quilt and two finishes. First you make and finish the top. Then, at some point, sooner or later, you turn it into a finished quilt. See, the tops really aren't UFO's to Darksiders. And having a stack of them in a cupboard is useful, sort of an instant quilt kit. Almost like having money in the bank. Cough.

See why I bought so much batting? I have the backing for several of these and binding made as well for some. And actually, there are at least two or three more. Then the quilts in my head.....

Anyone else notice that most of the UFO lists and now finished items are quilts?  :)

He didn’t get back until late so I haven’t seen him since he saw it in person, but when he saw it on Facebook, he said, “It seems surreal.”  I don’t think he could believe it’s actually finished.   :D

As you may have seen on the Today thread, I am working on the mystery quilt from 2017.

Originally, I planned to make a wall-hanging but really like the secondary pattern on the double.  I don't have enough fabric for this size and cannot get any more of fabric 5, so I've decided to go with plan C - finish it wall-hanging size and then consider how to make it bigger with the fabrics I already have.

Thanks, @wrenkins , but I've already asked on here and on Fb.  That's how it became a UFO.  I bought two different sorts of similarish fabric which I will use to add more pieced borders.

ETA - I appear to have made clue 6 using the wrong four patches.  :-(

This has been cut out for about 2 years.  I haven't finished it because it was massive - I've lost a lot of weight since I cut it out, so it ended up in the UFO pile. It's cut from New Look 6230, and I cut a size 20 I believe.

It was a remnant which had been in the stash for years, a very soft stretchy knit, and there wasn't quite enough without piecing the sleeves.  So, the bottom of each sleeve is pieced, although it looks fine.  It's only for work.

After finishing the white one (in the stashbuster challenge), I decided to spend some time finishing this one, and I'm glad I did.  I had to cut about 3" off the length as I couldn't find the neckband, and it's fine. I'm going to unpick the hem at some point as the fabric kept shifting - I think I was impatient to finish.  I'll bit the bullet, and thread the coverstitch up.

Really like the two tops.  The neckline (particularly on the white version, as its more obvious) is fantastic.
Remind me of the pattern number (as when I looked it up earlier, the neckline seems a lot higher).

Nothing to report, all UFo's still snug in their resting places.

Did however just remember another...cough cough...Disappearing 9 Patch throw, actually the first one I tried, in lovely Spring hues, an English Garden type floral for the big squares, assorted green foliage types for the half block parts and a red from the floral for the small accent square.

As Spring is hard upon us I should likely start there. It's going to be 70-79 F over Fri to Monday, or 21-26 C for you all.  :S This after very low 60's and upper 50's....

Well Im one step nearer to finishing one of my UFO as I have pieced the top of Number 5, the 100 shades of Grey which has turned into a full size whopper of a quilt!!

Im not sure Im going to be able to layer this, let alone quilt it at a humongous 80"sq (approx) as seen here...

It looks really good .. Just  <3 that grey with the blue and other colours.
If it's too big, can you remove some blocks and make posh pillow shams?

This one really deserves a drum roll!  Started when we were all at the 'old place', and I would say at a guess, probably 5 years ago, give or take a year.

It was a free pattern for a Weekender bag, but I can't remember which one, and I altered it a lot.  Made from upholstery remnants, and stiffened with some sort of adhesive Buckram(?), it wasn't the easiest sew.  The lining is voile (not a good choice) which I stabilised.  I used it because it looked good.

I added several pockets, some even zipped and a keykeeper.

The reason it took so long was that it was a pig to sew, and all it's been waiting for is the lining to be sewn down.  I did try to machine it, but the Pfaff didn't like it, so I sat down, bit the bullet, and sewed it in by hand.  :o  It was tough on my hands, and I did resort to a thimble, but it's done!

Not my best work, but it may get used  :S, or not.

OOoh I love that Jessie. Good pattern matching!  :loveit:
I have a big lump of very heavy upholstery fabric left over from curtains years ago and my plan was a 'carpet' bag. I downloaded an Annie bag tute off Craftsy but have never had the courage to start. If you say it was really hard to sew, I may just do something simpler with it.  It really is like carpet.  :S

@wrenkins, the sewing was difficult because of the stabiliser I used.  It was awful stuff.  As stiff as buckram, but iron-on.  The adhesive didn't hold on the corners and towards the end, I had to stick it with fabric glue.  The stiffener itself was like sewing cardboard!  If yours is sturdy enough on it's own, I wouldn't use a stabiliser.

I eventually found the pattern Here (https://familymaven.io/craftbits/patterns/make-your-own-weekender-bag-3Woh0rz7HEyOUUymuAGtkw/).

Thanks @b15erk. As I sit, I remember all sorts of other canvassy stuff I have that was destined for bags. This would be a perfect pattern to start with and make a mess have a go. I can't see piping happening but who knows? If I don't do, I won't learn.  8)
Another idea I had was for a machine cover which would be the bag but with no base.  :S That one is still being thunk about.  0_0

Back to topic and I found some pyjama bottoms that I made last year to match my dressing gown. Oh look! No hems. Same as the gardening trews, also made last year. I'm not a fan of hemming. Would you guess?  :(

I failed miserably with my next UFO, the lovely Vogue 1395 Rebecca Taylor pattern.  After unpicking it, and re-doing the narrow hems on the ties, I went for the pattern to make some sizing alterations, and guess what? No pattern. It's gone, disappeared, vanished.  :(

So, rather than spend more time looking for it, I've moved onto the next one.  The Amelia Tea Dress.  Lovely, but came up huge after me doing my usual unnecessary alterations ... :S  Up to now, I've took the awful lining out, unpicked and re-done the neckline, and taken over an inch off the length of the bodice, which was making it hang down to my hips.  It's looking much better, and hopefully, I'll get the sleeves in tonight, and finish the side seams taking a bit more than the 5/8" seam.

If I manage to finish it, there will be pics tomorrow.

Amelia Teadress now done.  Not as I originally planned it, with a full lining, but with the neck fixed and sitting nicely, the shoulders narrowed a tad, and the whole thing taken in.

I'm very pleased with it, although it did take time to get it right.

On to the B&W jobby.  I've now found the pattern, and without taking it totally back to basics, I've made alterations which will make it wearable.  It's still a lot too big in the body, but it would mean unpicking binding and topstitching so I'll just fasten it a bit tighter.  I raised the shoulders a lot, which reduced the armhole, and raised the neck, and it's looking much better.  Just need to attach the skirt now, and the job is good.

I've attached a pic of the Amelia Tea Dress.

What a lovely dress, @b15erk.  I dream of the day I can whip myself up a new dress. Dear Jessie, did you really need to revive this thread?  The wheels have truly come off my UFO wagon.

So here is the situation.

1. DS1's disappearing 9 patch - currently being quilted.  finished!
2. Jan Hassard's Spirals - begun at a workshop over a year ago.  Has been worked on recently but a long way to go. In one piece but I have no fabric for the borders.  Any advice warmly received.
3. TSP Mystery Quilt - I love it but indecision over size brought it to a halt. Top pieced, backing  pieced, wadding cut to size.  There is hope.
4. Swoon houses Haven't seen these for a while.   :S
5. Katharine Guerrier's Scrappy Houses quilt - begun when I was new and enthusiastic.  Some blocks are too big.  May become several smaller projects.  When I was preparing for the workshop last weekend, I picked up the fleece I was going to use to pin my bits to and there were scrappy houses.  If anyone would like a scrappy house mini quilt, I could join in the swap!

No progress to:-

In addition, I seem to have begun at least 4 new projects.

@Pearl , so sorry!  I had to regain space somehow, and between a Fabric Stash the size of a small country and UFO's clogging up every orifice - Something Had to be Done!  :)  That isn't including my alterations pile...

There, it's out in the open.  I don't want to do these UFO's and Stash challenges - I need to!  Don't worry, I have more to go at,  although as I don't quilt, mine are not taking up as much room as yours.

I haven't bought any meaningful fabric for ages either - although I did bag a couple of pieces off FB.  In my defence, they are earmarked for pyjama projects.

I 'finished' the Vogue 1395 last night.  It still needs the elastic adjusting (elastic too thin), and I think I need to try out a faux hem as it's too short for me.  Not really a 'me' dress - it adds more than a few pounds, but it's comfortable.

Pic attached.  Next up, the Bernina Shirtdress.  :S

Lovely dress Jessie. Doesn't look too short but would look nice with a plain black(?) band at the bottom.

Comfy Fran, but not very flattering, also a bit short.  OK if you've got good legs, but that is something I wasn't blessed with!  :S

I've dug out a UFO, a knit dress I seem to have started in 2008 and abandoned part way through. I've done a bit more on it and tried it on and I sort of see why I abandoned it.

The front bodice is expecting length I don't have in the bust or between neck and bust, I've not left the opening for the ties (its a wrap dress). Its floor length (rather than tea dress length) and its in a very dramatic print.

I've learned a bit in that 11 years so maybe I can rescue it as a dress or cut it up into something else if not.

This one has been lurking in the UFO pile for at least 6 months, and was just plain tedious.  I always find black difficult to sew, but this was also mesh with and interlining.  The interlining slipped and slid away from the mesh as I sewed it, so it kept being put back on the pile.

Surprisingly, it behaved beautifully on the Coverstitch, and the stitch was even, with no tunneling (which I was half expecting).

Now done, not sure I love it, but it's good for work, and doesn't need a vest underneath. It's showing up rather grey in the pics as it was sunny when I took the pictures.

This one has been lying in the UFO pile for ages.  I think the reason is, that I don't really know how I'll wear it - although it does look rather nice on.

It's a rather thin, but coarse linen I think, and it creases and frays like mad.

I finished it with snaps - just to get it done, so it doesn't look much like the pattern.

Like the Butterick, I somehow managed to forget the top stitching on the fronts.  Oh well.

Not sure what to do with this one.  Considered sending it to Quilts 4 Care Leavers for someone else to finish, but not sure what could be done to it to make it appeal to youngsters.

Been on a bit of a sewing hiatus for months. But have got my mojo back now.

Trying to work out what I've seen this year and can't for the life of me remember what the three UFOs I refer to in my signature were.

What I do remember I have done since Jan first.

Cut out 3 metres of faux fur and 3 of lining from stash to make a wrap as part of the original stash busting competition. Finished last week.

Cut up an enormous drop shouldered burgundy silk blouse found by a friend in a charity shop. Started turning it into a t-shirt. For a recycling completion here. Finished a month ago.

Bought 2 metres of blue and black fabric for the singing the blues competition. Then as I was working only 10 minutes walk from Soho bought another 2 metres of blue silk which was more suitable for a day dress.  Finished yesterday.

Made a t-shirt from a glittery fabric from funky fabrics from stash. Finished yesterday. About a metre.

Made purple spiders top from metre of cotton fabric from stash. Finished for Halloween.

Made top from gray skulls fabric from stash. A metre of fabric and finished in the summer.

Finished off black silk jersey top. Fabric bought during a get together from the last forum and been a UFO for years!

Finished off black and white floral dress from scuba fabric.

Made a small handbag from odd remnants of other projects. Say half a metre. Done last week.

Bought 2 metres of silk suiting and red lining from Berwick street as happened to be passing and was wearing a dress that needed a matching jacket. Any excuse!

So this year I have bought 10 metres of fabric and sewn 11 1/2. Plus finished two UFOs and repurposed a blouse.

I don't think one and a half metres of stash busting is very impressive. Just need to blame working in Holborn for the purchases!

1. DS1's disappearing 9 patch - currently being quilted. Finished!
2. Jan Hassard's Spirals - begun at a workshop over a year ago.  Has been worked on recently but a long way to go. I have recently sourced fabric for the border.  The end is in sight.
3. TSP Mystery Quilt - I love it but indecision over size brought it to a halt.  Top finished, backing pieced.
 Ready to be sandwiched.
4. Swoon houses  I can't even find this.  Well, that's one way to reduce the number of UFOs.
5. Katharine Guerrier's Scrappy Houses quilt - begun when I was new and enthusiastic.  Some blocks are too big.  May become several smaller projects.
6. Stack and slash quilt - needs sashing.  I've had an idea about this one!  Watch this space.
7. MIL's quilt - not my MIL.  Bought at a car boot sale from someone whose mother-in-law had died.  It was short and wide and I took it apart to integrate my own fabrics.  I have just off-loaded this in the Q4CL Fabric Friends group.  Someone else will finish it!
8. 4 patch chain quilt - begun at a BOM class.  I hate it but have spent too much money on it to throw it in the mud and stomp on it.  This one is going to a retreat with me in February, along with my Project Linus quilt for the TSP challenge.
9.  Jelly roll race - begun 4-5 years ago.  Only needs binding and has for 4-5 years.    :|

I hope this challenge will run again next year.  I may have a few more to add (but not the log cabin I have been hand sewing the border to the back of for the last 3 weeks).
