Patterns Discussion / Couture Actuelle
« on: September 08, 2018, 12:44:36 PM »
In a tearing hurry because the dog who’d just had his stitches out was in the car I picked up a copy of this mag in the supermarket and missed that it was for plus sizes. I’d just flicked it open, saw a jacket I loved on a model and bunged it in the basket. It’s lowest size is bust 114 cm. Is it going to be worth trying to scale it down? I’m kind of tempted to give it a try, has anyone else down or upsized a pattern substantially? I’ve gone a couple of sizes outside the nest before, but this would be a bigger hike.

Patterns Discussion / Burda August 2018
« on: August 13, 2018, 10:51:59 AM »
I’m making up the coat 117 from this magazine, and decided to cut and sew a 40 straight up, no pattern measuring or fitting. I picked this size because in the past it seemed to fit, despite my actual bust measurement being larger than the table of measurements by one and a half inches. I’m an inverse pear, and 5 foot 4, so about one and a half inches shorter than their table. You’ve guessed where this is going? Trying it on without the lining I’m finding it bigger on me than expected. Not catastrophic, but definitely a baggier fit than the model.
Now this will be the third Burda which has turned out bigger than expected. The other two were jersey designs, so I put it down to a different type of jersey being used, and/or the drafter using a wovens block for a stretch fabric. It’s been a few years since I made up one of their wovens, when a 40 fitted.
Has anyone found Burda mag patterns getting a tad bigger?

In the wardrobe / Butterick 4136

I've used this pattern to eat up a bit of stash. It's a very simple pattern for a skirt with flare at the hem and panels, which I adapted by adding a waistband and lining and playing about with the hemline. Fabric is a poly voile with a satin dot woven in. Great pattern for a rapid make btw.

In the wardrobe / Cowl neck top

Another from a long line of tops from the same self drafted pattern. This one's in a polka dot satin that's been in stash for a few years already.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
I blogged about it here https://patternpandemonium.wordpress.com/2018/07/12/this-and-that-and-a-good-read/.
This satin was a medium heavy , probably poly, one and with the bias cut there wasn't any problems of fraying that you usually associate with a pure silk satin, so stitching it up was a breeze. I've made more of these than I can count, for myself and other family members. They're very quick to assemble, and if your fabric is at least 140 wide don't take much. What else can I say? Not the most exciting make, but soothingly simple, done in 7 steps.

In the wardrobe / Sleeves!

Before falling down stairs, before Christmas, before London, I made a dress for one daughter which had detachable sleeves. Wanna see it?   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  zillion more photos on blog, won't use up forum space bunging them in here.

Patterns Discussion / Old patterns

How long do you hang on to patterns? Every time I decide to cull my envelope patterns, I see possibilities in each one, and they get a stay of execution. I’ve just cut a shirt from McCalls 6555 from around 1979. Its envelope is in tatters, and I found that a key piece of one of the shirts has been cut up by a certain family member during her anti social phase, but hey, it’s still good.

Current Projects / Hat
« on: May 12, 2018, 08:07:43 AM »
Just finished a sewn beret, no pics as yet. I didn’t have a pattern as such, but it’s a very simple kind. Basically, gather a large circle into a band. It makes a floppy, artists beret. I have had a piece of orange crushed velvet in stash for at least a decade, and decided to use this together with small amounts of brick coloured silk duppion as trim. There was enough left over velvet to make a small scarf as well.

A Good Yarn / Flowers!
« on: March 17, 2018, 06:44:37 AM »
I don’t normally show my face in this section of the forum,  but crochet is turning out to be a good occupation right now, and I’m churning out vaguely floral bits in thickish wool DD got for me at the local discount store. They haven’t got a project home yet, but maybe cushion cover, blanket, wrap or kimono type top? She got me shades of mauve and a black.

Patterns Discussion / Cape from DP studio

Has anyone seen this chez Tany Sews and Knits? It looks beautiful, very tempting. I reworked my last cape into a sleeved coat because it turned out not to be a garment I had a lot of use for, but this one is so nice.

To toile or not to toile, that is the question. Unusually for me I'm tracing off what I think is my size rather than hacking up the pattern. I think it might appeal to other family members who come in different sizes, and the pattern itself is on heavy paper, so keeping it seems like a good idea. The seam allowances are only 1cm, another consideration when it comes to thinking about size. I have a couple of fabric possibilities lined up in stash, the one I really want to try is a plaid. Whatcha think ladies? Could it work in a random unmatchy way or just look amateur? I'm thinking I'd have to try to get at least one side seam lined up.

Suggestions for patterns or links to rtw garments I might bat off for a longish cardi bordering on coat to make in a wool jersey would be gratefully received. I've had this jersey forever, bought it to make a dress, then went off the idea. I think I'd get a lot more use out of a top layer. It's a plain green fabric, so something which has a bit of style to compensate for zero fabric interest would be good.

In the wardrobe / Finished doom ridden project
« on: December 11, 2017, 12:24:21 PM »
Just celebrating. The wrap dress in silk velvet for dd2 is done! This drove me almost crazy, despite carefully hand tacking everything I must have had to unpick nearly every seam. It's packed and ready to go in the post, would be posted already if a tree hadn't blown down last night blocking our driveway. Jinxed or what?

In the wardrobe / Another one
« on: September 26, 2017, 10:01:17 AM »
I'm sewing a second blouson jacket. Daughter liked the first, and was keen to have one with some kind of quilting for warmth. Natch I'm making it hard for myself by actually quilting the lining pieces on some wadding I already had instead of either buying a ready quilted lining, fleece or iron on wadding.
That got completed last night, so onwards and upwards! I'm using a figured silk dyed to an aubergine colour for the outer. The fabric has a random pattern of shapes in satin weave on a ground of plain weave. It's a nice firm fabric so I don't anticipate problems (you've heard that before right?).
