In the wardrobe / Blouson Jacket
« on: September 21, 2017, 08:56:19 AM »
I've finally finished the jacket - you know, the one I said should be quick. 0_0 I used a dupion with violet weft threads and green warp, so it shades nicely. The dupion was quite lightweight but I lined it with a heavier silk twill in black. I had to put it aside for a week as I tried to source a zip for the front. Do you find you forget what you intended to do when you leave a project?

In the wardrobe / Bad Sewing Days

I'm having one. The seam ripper has been used, and used and used. I can't seem to get my head round basic techniques. I've stitched WS tog instead of RS tog 4 times so far. Is it the rain?

In the wardrobe / Weekend sewing plans anyone?
« on: September 01, 2017, 19:08:01 PM »
I've just finished a slightly complicated shirt. Next up is probably going to be a blouson style jacket. This should be quick (that's tempting fate!). I have to decide what zip to use though - the fabric is purple shot with green, and I got a purplish one with plastic teeth and a navy one with metal teeth. I wanted purple with metal teeth, but no joy. The main pattern pieces are cut and the fabric prepped.
Anyone else starting a new project?

Patterns Discussion / New to me Pattern Company

This is based in Paris and sells patterns as print outs. The styles in their collection are for the most part way too young for me, but I'm flagging it up in case there's someone out there looking for something different. I was curious, and sent for a couple of their basic patterns, which are the standard adaptations from which you could design your own thing. They were very prompt and delivery for me, in France, was only 3 euros - cheap as it goes. They have an address, phone number and contact email, and did reply to an email question of mine quickly ( but I wrote in French, don't know how bi-lingual they are, the site makes an effort, but obviously doesn't have a fully bi-lingual seamstress checking out copy, if you know what I mean). The patterns came as single size, printed on large format copy shop paper.

Patterns Discussion / Measure the tissue!
« on: May 28, 2017, 08:26:16 AM »
I've just made a slightly complicated skirt from a self drafted pattern and decided to pick up one of the bargain patterns I got recently and run up something simple and rapid for the hot weather. I bought size 8 to 12 in Butterick 4136 and was about to hack out the 12, for 36" hip. I'm doing the version which fits fairly close to the hip line in the illustration so I checked the finished measurements - 41.5 inches or 105 cms. Is that not a heck of a lot of ease in a flared skirt? Tape measure out, check the pattern. I made an 8, which fits 'right' for the envelope picture. It's been said before - I wish they'd put finished garment measurements up on the website for each pattern. I was lucky, the pattern covers the right size range, but if you don't hit it right you could end up having to buy a second pattern.

Patterns Discussion / Sports bra
« on: May 25, 2017, 06:55:42 AM »
Browsing another forum someone had linked to this
https://greenstylecreations.com/collections/fitness-clothing/products/endurance-sports-bra-bundle-band-sizes-28-to-40-and-cup

It's new to me. I'm unlikely to try it as I have an Enell which is unbeatable for avoiding bounce, but if anyone over a B cup wants to make a sports bra, this pattern looks as though it could be a good one.

In the wardrobe / Jeans in Silk Denim
« on: May 21, 2017, 11:00:23 AM »

I'm making some wide leg jeans in a silk denim fabric bought from les coupons de saint pierre. I've made these high waisted, with a wide band going from just below the waist to a bit above it, and deep Italian pockets in the front instead of classic jeans pockets, and bound pockets in the back. I top stitched in pink, after trying several different colours. They've still got to have the fastenings stitched on the waistband, and I want to get a pink belt.

In the wardrobe / Hi-lo hems, what do you think?
« on: May 15, 2017, 09:04:41 AM »
I've accumulated quite a lot of nice drapey velvets and am toying with the idea of turning one piece into a skirt. Design thoughts so far, smoothish over the hip area, flaring out mid thigh, hem finishing mid calf or a bit lower, but what about scooping it a bit higher in the front?
I'm trying to decide if this is a. a fashion in the death throes b. a fashion best worn by the under 40s
c. a runner . What do you think?

Fun with Fabric / Silk Denim

Yes, the fabric fast has flopped a little.  :D I bought some silk denim from Les Coupons de Saint Pierre. It's sold in 3 metre lengths.

In the wardrobe / Jeans Once More
« on: April 20, 2017, 08:10:58 AM »
I'm in the process of retesting my jeans block to see if by any chance it still fits. It's cut out in a remnant of furnishing cotton. The only changes I've made (by guesswork) is adding 2cms to the front waist. It's one of Winnies, in a size 12.

In the wardrobe / Seam ripper moment or creative opportunity
« on: March 28, 2017, 12:28:20 PM »
Have you noticed that when something goes wrong, that's often when you get your most inventive? I've just come back to a project that had to be left for a month. It's a jacket, pretty simple really, except that I'm quilting it. I'd got the front and back assembled, stitching the side seams and shoulder seams by machine in the outer fabric and turning in the lining along the seams and hand sewing them down. Too bad I hadn't worked out how I was going to put pockets in. This has been the latest (in a long line) of 'opportunities' for puzzling out how to bodge over mistakes.
Anyone else involved in project rescue?
