Title: Standfast & Barracks new classic lawn collection
Post by: Tamnymore on December 16, 2017, 21:29:31 PM
Standfast & Barracks in Lancaster used to print Liberty tana lawn and many of us drank from the font of fabulous fabric at their factory shop or katsfabrics on ebay.

We were inconsolable when they stopped printing Liberty (although luckily we had had the foresight to stock up on all the Liberty tana lawn we would ever need and then some).

I've just checked their facebook page and I see they are now stocking their own brand of Classic Lawn at £6.99. Some nice designs and looks comparable to Liberty. Goodie. An excuse to swerve off the M6 at J34 on next trip oop north. DH will be pleased!

What good news.  I am so pleased that they will make their own cotton lawn and hopefully make a success of it, and prove to Liberty that they shouldn't have relocated.

I had a look at their facebook page but can't see any of their designs.  Will they only be selling in their shop or online too?

If you scroll down their Facebook page a bit you'll see the new designs - and very tasty they are too. You should be able to order them via telesaes (though they are always very busy). I see that katsfabrics on ebay has some of the designs though at a higher price

I’ve looked on their FB page...there’s nothing there, last post 2 October...

Seems they have 2 FB pages.

I've just returned from a ' research' trip up the M6 to Lancaster  :ninja:
Standfast & Barracks to be precise; to check out their new range of Lawn, just to make sure that it compared favourably with the Liberty that they used to print .....
and I'm pleased to report that it is really nice stuff and the patterns and colourways, although limited at present,  are very good. The chap that I spoke to explained that these are sort of an experiment to see how sales go, so hopefully, if all goes well there may be an extended range in the future?
I was tempted  with 2 lengths of the lawn and 1 of a lightweight/fine dressmaking velvet with a beautiful sheen to it and at only £6.99/m it could have been more  :D

I`m seriously jealous of all of you who live "up North" - so much choice, so much temptation!

So if we don't buy it, it will be our fault when it isn't there for us in future.

We have a responsibility to support them...

Kad, good of you to go on a dangerous reconaissance mission up the M6 on our behalf!

Vegegow, you don't have to live up north, you just have to have a phone, a credit card and a fabric habit. I phoned this morning (01524 598222 option 3) and ordered up some lawn and Christmas fabric. A nice lady rang back a minute later to ask if it was blue polar bears or red polar bears I wanted. She rang back later when she had put it through the till and I paid by cc. All very easy and no problem getting through by phone. She says it should arrive tomorrow so let's see. The standard postage cost is £7 so it will be cheaper to order by phone rather than katsfabrics on ebay if you are ordering more than 3m, which I was (ahem).

What's that you say? It was only yesterday I said I had all the Liberty lawn I would ever need. Ah yes but that was Liberty and this is Standfast and Barracks and, as Acorn points out it is our duty to support them!  :D

Well the fabrics have arrived (very efficient - thank you S&B) and very tasty they are too - easily as nice as Liberty lawn but with some new designs. They have a really nice smooth finish ('double calendered' is the term I believe). I also ordered some polar bear fabrics in the vain hope that I could do something with them before Christmas ... err no! The photo of them has put lines on them - that's a trick of the light.

Definitely worth ordering some of these while they last. Glad to support Lancashire industries!

See the lawn fabrics here: https://www.facebook.com/clearancefabrics/photos/pcb.2216191471740491/2216163401743298/?type=3&theater (https://www.facebook.com/clearancefabrics/photos/pcb.2216191471740491/2216163401743298/?type=3&theater)

And here's my haul

I am pleased they are good quality and I do hope they will succeed and I am totally with you for supporting British made.  I am not allowing myself to buy anymore fabric just yet though, but will keep my eye out in the future.

I've just had a browse and there are some lovely prints.

Think I'll give them a ring tomorrow and order a couple of lengths.

Strictly in support of British industry you understand :P

I like the dark coloured Paisley very much, what colour is the background?
Title: Re: Standfast & Barracks new classic lawn collection
Post by: Tamnymore on December 20, 2017, 15:29:58 PM
Fiona, looking carefully at the paisley (I think it's called Obadiah) it is sightly mottled dark blue and dark brown. I've taken another photo but it doesn't capture the colour - the true colour is quite a bit darker and richer than my photo! Why not order some and see!

Thanks.  It looks brown on my screen, but I wondered if it was dark charcoal grey.  I really shouldn't buy any - I have a load of Tana lawn waiting to be sewn up already.
My sewing stopped since getting the pup, although he is not far off two now, and settling down nicely.  I hope to be able to get back to it sometime soon.  :\

I keep picking it up and peering at it! It's deceptive. It does look charcoal-ish from a distance then when you get close up and you see the background is made up of blue and brown (Mr Tamny say it's black not brown so let's say browny-black). Quite clever really and unusual for lawn where we are more used to seeing pastel or bright flowery patterns. Hmmm. Wish I'd got some more. No, bad Tamny, mustn't buy more!

I too have a lot of Liberty but I wanted to support S&B's new venture though by the comments on their Facebook pages former Liberteenies are snapping it up. In future (if I ever use up my current supply of lawn that is) I'd go for the S&B 'made in Lancashire' offering  rather  than Liberty.

Well I was going to order a couple of lengths but ended up bying 12m :o

I was so torn I just gave into temptation.  I've  ordered the paisley and have plans for a Style Arc stylearc.com/shop/pdf-sewing-patterns/lennie-over-shirt-pdf/.

New lawns and a Style Arc pattern sale, not good for the bank blalnce so near Christmas but heigh ho, who cares.

Well its arrived :fabric: and I am absolutly delighted <3 <3 <3.

Very prompt service as I only ordered mid afternoon yesterday and the fabric is yummy.

I will try to get pics tomorrow when the light is better but my track record of posting pics on here is not good.

Now just a discussion with DD as to which ones are for her :|

At £7 the postage could seem expensive but you do get it the next day which is great especially at this time of year where you could be waiting a week or more. The fabric is easily as nice as Liberty. Hope you enjoy planning how to use it.

I've only measured one length at the moment but it is the most generous 2m I've ever seen, nearly 2.8m. 0_0

Here are the lawns I bought the other day.

One of the fabrics I wanted has already sold out, whilst I know they will only be doing small print runs to test the market, I think that shows there is a market for them

Very tasty, Ellabella and maybe your 2.8m for 2m piece was the end of a roll. I like the paisley too. I lurve paisley pattern in any form however I must not buy any more and I need to go on a fabric diet in the new year. Yes, I'm sure there's a market for this fabric but a lot will depend on the price point. I'm sure the lawn we've just been buying isn't seconds and I doubt they would make a profit at £6.99 pm in the longer term. We shall have to see how it goes.

Just thinking of a day trip there myself. :) I love lawn fabric.

I looked at some Liberty lawn this morning but of all the designs they have they are nowhere near as nice as they were years ago. I found maybe 4 that appealed. And they are expensive, too.

If you check through this thread you'll see what I've said about their telesales service and costs - I found them to be excellent.

Also just to note they don't open again until the new year. They are a bit out of the centre of Lancaster and I've not been able to find a bus from the centre so the options are probably a walk on a very busy road or a taxi. But if you drive it's J34 on the M6.

Thanks, Tamnymore. I've got the week between Christmas and New Year to plan what patterns to make and to look at the fabric so I can order in the New Year. My cutting out table (trestle table with leg risers) should arrive next week so the timing is perfect. I really do want to plan a trip there, though.

When I was looking at Liberty cottons this morning, I was considering making Liesl's cinema dress for summer but it takes quite a bit of fabric and at Liberty's prices it was about £100. I'm still trying to get my sewing skills back up to snuff so that was too much for one garment. S&B will get lots of my business, though!

Yes the cinema dress is nice but it is surprisingly fabric hungry. Have you been to Mandors yet? I'm sure they will have a sale after Christmas.

I made the 'cinema dress' earlier this year and purchased the stated amount of fabric. Surprisingly I didn't have to add anything to the length of the pattern, I'm about 6'tall, and still had sufficient fabric remaining to sew a short straight skirt for DD.
If you're shorter than me I'd suggest that you check the measurements of the pattern pieces and try a layout of your own as you'll probably get away with using rather less fabric (and save £ too)

That's interesting, Kad. I am 5 ft 8 in so I might indeed look at the layout and measurements. I was stunned when I read how much fabric it takes!

Although if you make the shorter length dress and use 150 mm wide fabric it takes 4y which is 3.6m (and that's for the largest size which equates to a UK 22) so that doesn't sound so bad. I'm shorter than both of you so the longer one would probably be a maxi on me.  :D

I think it came to something like 5 metres when I looked but I was pairing it up with Liberty fabric which I think is 1.3 metres wide (42 inches?)  I will have to have another look at the pattern and also see what the width of the S&B fabric is. actually if I use their fabric it helps a lot with the price compared to Liberty so the quantity matters a but less.

I like the longer length because it covers a varicose vein in the back of one of my legs - and also makes you look slimmer. ;)

@BrendaP  you need to phone with your order to get the £6.99 pm offer  but they are efficient. P&p is a flat rate of £7 with next day delivery so you  will save over the katsfabrics on ebay rate if you buy 2m or more.
