I've only downloaded the form ladies (and Germs)...haven't done anything with it!

The thing is the categories....

Okay, The Opus for first quilt ... but then ????
I would like to enter The Undulating Terror as 2 person , as I had it professionally quilted
and I thought of The Hstathon...but in which category?

Also do the quilt police patrol the show??? Cos I have never seen a QAYG quilt at the FoQ's before!

Maybe i could do another Flamingo...that would be fun?!

Do it!  I've put two quilts in shows, one at Malvern about 5 years ago and one at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show  in Sisters, Oregon, USA, near where I used to live..  It is fun but if you're going to anonymously lurk around your pride and joy to listen to comments, well, be prepared.  Most will be complimentary but there are always a few negative nellies and you need to be able to let their bitchy comments go without letting them get to you.

But it's a new experience and you should go for it!  Why not!?

I want to see your quilts!  I've not been on the forum much over the last few years, so I've probably missed an awful lot of lovely quilt photos!

I remember you were thinking about whether to enter or not back on TSF.

Can't help you with categories, but I wouldn't worry about the quilt police. As Yankee Doodle says, there are going to be some 'negative nellies', but plenty more compliments.


I have a confession.....

I entered a miniature quilt last year.
Really!
It was the worst on the wall, but I don't care. I did it.( I don't think I'd ever do it again....)
I'd turned 50 a few days before the event and I felt it was the time to dare to do something 'different'...something for me.

 The competition is open to quilters of any ability.
Even someone like me.

(I've only put a small picture up because I'm shy.)

 My daughter was thrilled and shocked when she spotted it...it was worth it to see her face!  I received the 'judges comments' in the post after the event and they were kind and fair in what they said. I feel no shame in my effort.

Must admit though, that I didn't hang around for fear of hearing any comments.

Imi, you must enter! I've told my mum already that we'll need to do the "Iminei tour" when we go this year!

I would probably go with traditional for the HSTathon. I read an article in "The quilter" (quilter's guild quarterly magazine), that said that the Contemporary category is the one that gets the most incorrect submissions. I think that the quilt must be an original design (by the maker) if it's to go in the contemporary category.

I'm making mine up as I go along (working on the last border now!) so I'm considering putting mine in the contemporary category. My biggest worry is always whether I'm putting it in the right category, but I've been OK so far!

Haha, good question vegegrow! I should've explained!

Basically, you get the quilt wet, then stretch it out to the size it should be (it will sort of shrivel a bit when it's wet) and pin it (I pinned it into insulation boards). You leave it until it is fully dry and this makes the quilt "remember" how it should stay. Then it hangs beautifully at the show, even after you've folded it up to send it in to the show.

I'd never heard of it until I entered an enormous quilt last year (my profile pic) and it was quite obvious when looking at all the quilts on display whether they'd been blocked or not!

so.....? If your measurements are just slightly off can you gain /loose length and are the quilts dried vertically or horizontally

I did it laid on the floor, so I made sure my measurements were the same vertically and horizontally (it was a square quilt). I couldn't believe the difference it made! I may even have some pictures somewhere of pre and post blocking, I'll see if I can find them!

I think you mostly hear of blocking with knitting, to make all your pieces the right size before you sew them together.

 -< could you possibly hire a village hall for a half day or a day?  I don't know the costs in Dorset, but in wet and windy Cornwall it's about £20 for a half day.  It seems such a shame not to enter  :'(

You could make a mini quilt instead  :). A four seasons mini quilt!  :sew:  :snip:

QuiltySisty, that's an amazing quilt!  Hexagons!  Hand sewn, I presume?  How big is the quilt?  You must have worn out a good few thimbles!

Wow, that is some quilt!  I want to know more details!   How did you go about designing this and then putting it all together so it looked like your design?   I'm picturing a  six foot high mountain of multicoloured hexagons.  The mind boggles.  Did you sew the hexagons together by hand or is there a trick that makes it easier?  It must have taken forever.  I am in awe, QuiltySisty!

It's 87 inches square!

I basted every hexagon before I started any piecing (that was super dull!), if memory serves, there were over 3,000 of them!

I then organised all the hexies (each colour had it's own box) so the orange box would go from red-orange through to yellow-orange. Then I hand pieced it in zig zag rows, trying to keep the fabrics random, but also following the colour progression.

I started it around Christmas 2015 and had it finished by the end of June 2016 (I have a lot of time on my hands as I'm on long term sick leave from work). I hadn't intended to enter it in the competition (it was just a present for my sister) but my mum guilted me into it! Glad I did though as the feedback from judges was really good, and it ended up in a magazine too!

Imi, how big is your deck? Will the HSTathon not fit on it? If it was a nice sunny day then it wouldn't take very long to dry out. If not, you'll just have to come on a quilt blocking holiday to Norfolk!

It was in Popular Patchwork Lantana. It was an article where an editor had chosen her favourite quilts from the traditional category and mine was one of them :-D I couldn't believe it! I was just flicking through the magazine after dinner and suddenly there it was, a lovely surprise!

I saw Quilty's quilt at the NEC too, stunning. I went on a Quilty Hunt to find it specially. First I've heard about blocking a quilt, yes I associate blocking with knitting although I don't do that either.  :|

Its not just me!!!! that has multiple quilts all over the place!!

How big has that one come out as???...
I seem to recall my blocks were bigger than the original design cos I couldn't do with messing around with piddly lil HST's!

Wow they are fabulous, my own thoughts would be either HST or Stellarious  probably in Traditional as they are traditional patterns but hey ho who am I to know. glad you've plucked up the courage to have a go.

Wow!  Wow wow wow!

As the others have said, they are all FANTASTIC.  My favourite is probably HSTathon because I am a sucker for rainbows.

And 'A Good Year for the Roses' is just beyond words it is so lovely.

Sorry Girls, A Good Year for the Roses is too far from finished, I overextended myself with the butterflies as they are imported from another fabric, appliqued on and then as they looked so rubbish I decided to try and embroider over them...which i have managed on one ...

Well nearly, as you can see I haven't managed to 'do' the body yet!..... and even then it took me hours and nearly killed The Splurge ! Remember this is not FMQ, but rather slow machine stitching up and down with my WF !!!

.....and there is more than the one butterfly needing this treatment, and I haven't even begun on the roses yet....
so Way, way, waaaay far from ready. One day though... I mean I finished the Opus didn't I ?

But I'm hearing a lot of love for The HSTathon???

One question, do you think QAYG is allowed?? Or will the judges/visitors hide their faces in horror as a caretaker is instructed to sweep it up into a bin-bag (extra large!)

The HSTathon would get my vote too.
No idea about the QAYG but it's a quilt show and you have made a quilt so I don't see how there could be any objection unless it is stated somewhere in the rules that they are not permitted.

Another vote for HSTathon :-D I'd go traditional, as part of the description for contemporary is that it must be your own design.

I have finished my top making enterprise (until I find out whether they fit or not!)so I shall be getting my quilt out today to give it a measuring, so I can fill in the form! It is distinctly not finished, but I should be able to get it done in time!

There's no problem with it being QAYG Imi, I'm sure there will be lots of others that are as well, everyone has their own preferred methods :-)

I am now officially entered! Better get on with the quilting or it'll be my quilt being swept into a bin bag!

I've put mine in traditional, I always struggle to decide the category. I'm always tempted to go for contemporary, but am never totally convinced by it!

Can't think of anything else at the moment, just enjoy seeing your quilts on display :-D

As far as I know, you don't have to ask the "longarmer", if you are allowed to enter the quilt to a show. It's your quilt, it's your choice.
But she/he would be happy to be mentioned, because it's her/his quilting work on a longarm quilting machine. ;)

Yes, I had a chat with him yesterday about it and about basting The B&W monstrosi jobby...
£50!!!! WOW, hes reasonable for the quilting but £50 for a bit of basting!!!

I may get him to Quilt the B&W job as it looks too huge...Its certainly too big for me to layer here at home, and I may have to go over to Paulines ...where btw, they have started charging a small fee for layering  >:) .....

But will they charge me twice as its in two halves ????

Nice quilts, all of them.  Love the use of colours in The Undulating Terror.  HSTathon had my vote, too.  I will be watching for all three of them at the NEC.  I'll be there on the Saturday, taking a coach from one of my locals, Quilters Dream in Andover.
