Title: The Sewing Places' Great Cushion Cover Swap the Second
Post by: Iminei on February 18, 2019, 08:45:11 AM
The Darkside seems to be slumbering throughout the winter ... Time to shake things up a bit .....

The Sewing Place's Great Cushion Cover Swap the Second

Aim:- To make a quilted cushion cover of 12, 14, or 16 inches square.

Technique:-  piecing, applique, paint, embroidery, embellished or a mix
with a zip, button or simple envelope closure.

Participants will be partnered at random,
much like TSP's successful Secret Santa event.

You will need to post a brief paragraph with your preferred colour choice,
Brights, Pastels, Monochromes, Complimentary, Greens  Purples etc

.... but the construction and design of the cover will be the Makers choice.

When you send your cover to your selected partner,
you can choose to be anonymous or reveal your identity ...

But please after receiving your cover, post a pic in this thread and thank your covers Maker.

Now for the boring bits:-

This swap will run for a month from TSP's Anniversary,  March 1st to March 31st

You can send your cushion to your partner anytime from the beginning of the Swap
but please make sure you have posted by the end of the first week in April.

Postage will be the responsibility of the Maker and cushion inners will be the responsibility of the Recipient.

Everyone is encouraged to participate wherever in the world they may be,
but please be aware that your chosen recipient may be in another country.

If you specifically do not want the small extra cost this would involve please make me aware and I will try my best to ensure you are partnered with a participant in your own country.

To register for The Great Cushion Cover Swap the Second:-

Please post in this thread with your colour preferences and pm Iminei with your address.
Your address will only be shared with TSP admins and your partnered TSP'er .

Deadline for registering will be midnight on the 28th February 2019.

I'm so pleased The Darkside is getting a much needed shake up and boost........ especially as I'm in a sort of mindfugging limbo at the moment.
My last effort was such that @Ellabella took drastic steps to get rid of it    so this one will be a superior being  0_0
I'd prefer bright colours ( any but green :x but anything is acceptable  as  my hopefully new house has many rooms  :D
Looking forward to this..... come on peeps.....please join in  :sew: :sew:

I'm in.

As for colours, surprise me.  It will be for my sewing room which is very neutral at the moment, wood floor and pale pinky cream walls.  The only real colour is a certain green cactus 0_0

@Lowena, don't worry, it survived!!!!  I unpacked a box of soft furnishings that had been taken by the cleaning team and guess what I found. hee hee.

I'll have a go.  I'm an experienced cushion maker but not an experience quilter.

Either:
Cream, duck egg (or hues of turquoise), with maybe a splash of mustard
Or:
Orange, black, tropical green with a bit of white.

Oh, and I hate hexagons!  :D

My piecing experience is a grand total of one BOM from 2017 and I've never done applique... but I'd love to join in if you'll have me! It'll be great to have the motivation to go back to the dark side to learn some new techniques and I loved the Secret Santa.
My room is blues and greys (bedspread is white with big grey swirls, curtains are pale blue, and existing cushion covers are Liberty Kussman in the blue colourway with grey backing) and I struggle a bit with things that have a lot of bold contrasting colours.

My first efforts at patchwork, when I didn't lnow any better, were made with six sided pieces!

OK sign me up.

The cushion I receive will live in the conservatory so neutrals with lots of ultramarine/royal blue please.

Not sure yet what techniques I'll use, I might have a go at something different.  If it happens to be me instead of Saker who's paired with Lowena, well I've got plenty of green fabric too.  :ninja:

I really enjoyed making and receiving my cushion cover last year but I'm afraid the timing of this one is just too tight for me.
I don't know how long DH's jacket is going to take to get finished and lambing is looming.  I am very much hoping to do a Project Linus quilt but  there's a lot longer to get that done.

I'll join in!  I'd prefer another American to save on postage, but it's not required.

I'll give some options for colors.

My sewing room comfy chair could use a cushion- colors there are dark red and yellow/gold (not lemon), with some mossy green.

Living room has dusky blues and beige/tan/brown.

Master bedroom will soon be redone in yellows and greys.

Oh, I knew, I forgot something... the colours!!

I would love to have something contrasting like a bright yellow-orange-red on a black background. Bright green and blue is also okay, but please NO PINK OR VIOLET and no pastels ;)

Deadline for registering will be midnight on the 28th February 2019.

How many are we already?

It seems that last year we had six weeks and it ran into April.
March 20th to April 30th
Can we do that again? I don't finish work until the end of March. I understand completely if you don't want to change the dates now but I'd appreciate the extra stressing time.   :[

Roll up, roll up peeps!! It's great fun, doesn't have to be perfect to be appreciated, is not overwhelming  ( I freak out at the mere mention of zips or buttonholes ) as you can choose your size and fastening.
Moreover it is a good way for Non Darksiders ( perish the thought that they still exist ) to dip their toes in the water.
Come on now... join in.....you know you want to

I know what I'm going to do but I am, as usual, fiddling about with what I'm going to do it with. (I'll be down the back of the grammar class with a heap of fabric).  :S I've got the red plastic thing out and the black and white photograph thing going. All the gear and no idea!!!  0_0
I have one particular little item that just will not play ball no matter what direction I fussy cut so I may have to take desperate measures.  :snip:
The good news is that I seem to have tons of pieces in the appropriate colours which is a miracle in itself since most of my stash appears to be green!  :x

I've got my pattern picked out. I purchased the background fabric. It's not really what I wanted, but the best choice available locally. And the flu hit me this morning, so not much chance of my going out anywhere to buy something different. @wrenkins  Yes, but just one side.

My "partner" has a colour choice, wish fits my taste and makes it really great fun to plan, to choose, to cut, to sew  0_0 .... When I got the name, I knew right away, which blocks I will make, so it was way to start :)

Well it's all going terribly well here.
I veh veh carefully did all my calculations  8) (I'm a scientist you know) then I did them all again then I did some hard sums and some adding and subtracting and then set about making my HST squares.
Lovely!
I took my ruler and my rotary cutter and I removed a scant quarter off every single side of every single %^&^% square! I'm just glad I'm not in charge of anything important!  :[ Oh wait.....  :S
Now they look lovely anyway....though smaller.  ;)

...but where's the fun in that?  :o
A wise young man once told me 'if you're not prepared to make a fool of yourself, you'll never do anything' and he was right!
I have taken that thought with me through every thing I've ever done/learned flinging myself with gay abandon into ice skating, skiing, snowboarding (black art), wind surfing etc etc...all things you can't practise in front of the mirror in your bedroom!  0_0

Ah, so you've got @Lowena  as your recipient.  I do hope the main pieces are lime and viridian.

I'm coming along splendidly but I've been thrown a slight curve ball so I'll have to juggle my time a little bit.  0_0
Could I just say that I only ever do HSTs for other people. I did them for @Cheesecake last year and I'm doing them for

I'm finding this really tricky. I know what I want to do but I can't find fabric anywhere! I don't do much P+Q so buying in metres doesn't seem sensible, but nowhere round here seems to sell fat quarters. I don't trust my eye for colour enough to buy online without being able to see the fabrics next to each other in person first. My stash is split over two houses so I'm hoping I find something suitable in my other stash this weekend, if not it'll have to be online and hoping for the best.

Are you looking for prints, patterns or blenders? @Sonatine

Is it a colour thing you are worried about?

OOoooo @Sonatine here we go. You have stepped off the edge and fallen into the black hole that is stashville.  0_0

What do you need and we'll send it off to "a middle man" to forward to you?  0_0

Don't fret too much about it. I'm a bit concerned about my colours but it's all a bit of a punt. And anyway...we can always redecorate to match!  0_0

Greens anyone?!?!?!?  :x

@Iminei I have to admit I'm not really sure what those words mean :S Although from lurking in the darkside I can sort of get what they're describing, I'm not sure what their different uses are. I know the colours that I want to use, I'm just worried about different shades / tones / patterns looking odd together because I don't have much of an eye for colour and wouldn't do anything remotely contrasting normally.

I think the bigger fabric shop in my home town will cut in 25cm lengths, and has quite a big range of cottons, would that still be useable rather than fat quarters? I'm sure there must be somewhere in London that I've missed but most of the fabric shops here seem to be dress fabric. If all else fails my stash growing a bit isn't the worst thing to happen

@Sonatine

If you are using a patterned fabric or a fabric with different colours/tones in it ..
Look on the selvage and check the colour dots out.
Any fabrics in those colours will go with your main fabric.

Choosing the fabrics for any project is usually the hardest part as everyone here will tell you but if you can get to a shop the staff there should be able and willing to help you.

Any good fabric shop should be willing to cut lengths from 10cm, if not fat quarters which is 50 cm x Half wof .

I finally got the fabrics I wanted and cut out all the pieces for the front yesterday - all set for a morning sewing, which I did.  Then come to the last and biggest pieces and found I had cut them 1/4 inch too big, so cut off the extra and sewed them up ready to put the front together only to find the bigger pieces were now too small! (Forgot I had scaled the pattern up and cut them correctly the first time)  (Have i got enough fabric left to re-cut them????)  Phew yes, I managed to recut them.  I now have a nice lot of ready stitched pieces to use on something else.  :)

I've chosen my fabrics :D one has had to come from Doughty's - I'd never been on their website before and oh my goodness what a lot of beautiful fabric. I managed to resist temptation though and only buy what I needed for this cushion cover but it was difficult, even for a non-quilter. I'm hoping it arrives quickly and then I can get going next week. I'm also hoping that the first attempt goes well enough that there doesn't need to be a second one!

@Sonatine   Doughtys have an incredible customer service team ... or the Marvellous Mail Order Maidens as I call them.

Mickey help identify the closest matching batik to a load of yardage I bought, (it must have been at least 3 years ago if not 4, and you know how batik batch dyes change) for the Murder, Mystery Quiltalongathon Im doing .... waited until a new batch was in to get the best possible match and remembered to call me after it came in . Upshot was the original two cut pieces (as its for separate blocks it doesnt matter) were the best fit ... she called at lunchtime and the goodies were on my door the next morning... you wont be waiting long!

Here the new fabric in the middle of the existing batch made into blocks ... Spot the difference???

@Sonatine I both agree and disagree with my friend @Iminei
Doughty's are brilliant and their customer service is second to none  :)
Sometimes their orders take ages ( well, several days ) to arrive  :( They always take at least 3 or 4 days  and when one is used to Amazon Prime, that's a long time  :(
I haven't started my cushion but it's only the middle of the month  :P

I finished my 'top' yesterday and I'm mostly pleased with it. I have lost a couple of tiny points in the making up but considering I pushed myself well out of my comfort zone, it's not too bad.  :[ The self imposed pressure is because it's for someone else. I don't want them to open it and be disappointed.  :\
Next comes the quilting. Oh dear! Keep It Simple methinks.  :) I don't know why I do this to myself. Yes I do. It makes me do hard stuff that I wouldn't normally try.

Keep it Simple is excellent advice ... nothing wrong with parallel lines or cross hatching or dot to dot quilting either!

Trace the design on your cover and see what your fingers tell you x

Oh @Iminei I do love your faith and positivity.  0_0 My fingers tell me nothing and 'stitching in the ditch' would be akin to FMQ with the side steps and detours.  0_0
I'll put the wadding on and see what suggests itself...if anything. It'll probably be stitching 'over a bit' because I'm vaguely following a picture in a magazine and that's what they did.

I've gone all off piste!!!!!!
I was working merrily from stash and it was going well but most of my stash pieces are small and I needed a bigger piece for the back. Preferably one without little shapes cut out of it.  :S
Off I went to look and picked some. That was easy. Fits in with my background...perfick!
But wait!
Surely if I was going to do that then some should appear on the front to tie it all in. The front is now complete!!! What to do?!?!?!?! -<
I ordered something!
Let's just say that it will either be a hit or a miss! I can't see any middle ground with this. I'm going to back it in Marmite!!!!  :o
It hasn't arrived yet and when it does I might hate it and go back to plan No 936 but at the moment we're going off piste and far into the woods!!!!  0_0

I have been so excited to be making a cushion cover, I completely forgot I would be receiving one  :o!

It arrived today, I've been out all day and it was lying on the mat when I came in.  I am delighted with it  :), thank you!  You got my colours down to a tee and I really like the various animal patterns  :).  Photo to follow when I've put a cushion pad in it.  :vintage:

Thanks Brenda, it is gorgeous!

I'm finishing the quilting on mine tonight. Should be on it's way in a couple days. It has to cross a big pond, so it needs plenty of travel time.

WHO HOO :D :P :loveit: 0_0

Mine arrived yesterday and as soon as I started to unwrap it and saw that lovely green batik on the back I knew I’d won the lottery.

Beautiful piecing and appliqué but the quilting and machine embroidery  is inspired.

Even though the colours were picked for my sewing room I would love to keep it in the sitting room but the thought of two small boys playing around it doesn’t bear thinking about so it is safe upstairs with me.

Thank you so much Imi, it makes me smile every time I see it.

Hi @crafter I am glad you liked the cushion cover. I worried a bit because the batiks are really very bright and colourful. I am sorry that the "black" is more brown than black, but that's the darkest black wich I could get in that short time.

@Renegade Sewist Just steal, it's not really my design, I stole the idea from Oakshot Fabrics (you know @Iminei ? ;))

In truth I prefer the "other" side, because there is no really backside on this cover. Maybe @crafter will show us a pic too. Then you can steal both sides, Renegade Sewist  :D

I think this might be the last patchwork thing I make, I'm finding the cutting out horrible. I can't square up my fabric, every time I try I end up making it wonky in the other direction no matter how carefully I make a right angle and then I just slowly shred the fabric. Argh! It's so frustrating. Is there a way to cut the pieces without using a rotary cutter and quilting ruler? I have all day tomorrow to get the sewing done but I really need to get the cutting out done today - I'm about halfway through now.

@Sonatine I recently made a quilt top where the pieces were nearly all different sizes. I made a template for each which took a while but it was worth it. I drew round with a very light pencil and cut with shears. The whole process was much more time consuming than stack and whack with a cutter but it was the only way.  :S
My templates were cereal box weight card. I moaned a lot of the time about the fiddling but now I'm considering doing another one similar!  ><

Post by: Sonatine on March 29, 2019, 11:04:31 AM
@Iminei @wrenkins thanks, I just had a sudden burst of self confidence and cracked on and got another colour cut, so I've only got a few pieces left to go now. I'm fine once I've got the initial straight edge, it's just getting it that's difficult, probably because I've got an A4 cutting mat and 4.5" square ruler...
For clothes I draw around the pieces and cut with shears, but there's a much big margin of error!

I never bother too much. I just splat the ruler down and cut  :| I can't be doing with a 24" ruler, too long to be manageable ( shh.. don't tell @Iminei ) I have one but never use it. I have a 6.5" square and a 12" square with cutting slots and they do me fine.

I have managed, with some ado, to flip flop my 24" x 6" ruler hither and thither for years and two weeks ago I just lost the bap and splashed out on a 12" X 6" non slip jobby. Oh yes!!! Lovely. There is still a place for the big girl but for waving about the smaller one is much better. Less likely to have yer eye out!

I agree ... I snaffled a 12 x 6 from Stitchintime at a very good price last year and it is wonderful when the 24 x 6 is too unwieldy ... However when cutting strips of yardage only the 24 x 6 will do!

I was very lucky to be gifted this ....

as a thank you for taking a lady to Midsomer quilting last year and find it wonderful for when I dont want to unpack the sweatshop ironing board in the corner to press a block or cut something .... and who knows if I ever go to a workshop again Im sure it will be extra useful.

Its the larger one which I was confidently told you can just close on your half made blocks and take away with you and indeed once when I was searching for an HST I was sure I had already made ... I found it, days later inside it!

But isnt this a lil off topic now???

Where are those last few cushion covers???
Do remember you need to post pics of your wonderful cushion covers when they get to you!!!

If you don't already have a staple gun and a glue gun it's probably cheaper to just buy the double sided mat. Laura at Sew Very Easy has a youtube video on a double sided pressing mat without using staples or glue guns. You might be able to modify it to make a cutting side as well though.

A package arrived from England today! Many thanks to L. Welsh- but I'm not sure who that is by the TSP aliases.  Whoever you are, you did beautiful work! Your note referenced the mis-matched points, but I think they look fine! I can never get mine all matched up either and avoid triangles diligently as a result. (And you did a much better zipper than my attempt on the pillow I sent out.) I love that you chose a pattern called Minnesota Star! (My son, a player of every version of the Zelda video game series, commented on the print on the dark grey which looks like the Tri-force symbol in the game. LOL!) It will go beautifully in the bedroom- and now I have more incentive to get the quilt for the bed finished!

Hie thee hence Wrenkies Lowena and get a cushion in it and some in situ pics, front and back, to go in the Album.

I know you're packing but to be fair to your gifter and all the work and time she put into it, and it will look so much nicer on a chair in your lovely light conservatory.

@Iminei  I'll try, but there are no cushion pads anywhere ( all packed ) no chairs in the garden room, just piles of boxes. I have said I will try and I will. I have apologised to my gifter and crave her patience, but at the moment, I hope she'll please take this as an acknowledgement. If she ( Ms Unknown ) has any pics, that'd be great....otherwise, please be patient  <3

@wrenkins I confess it was an offcut from 'my too nice to ditch' pile but if you want the rest to back another couple of cushions you are more than welcome.

I loved your colours board but you gave me so much choice ;).  That coral colour seemed to feature in a lot of pics so I hoped it was a favourite.

colours board ?????

Wrenkins put up a link to a Pintrest board when we were asked to specify the colours we wanted for our cushion cover, like a design wall for colour.

It was a revelation.  I'd never thought of doing something like that but it was so helpful.

My colour skills are woeful, its the hardest part of The Darkside for me but Wrenkins board really helped.

Title: Re: The Sewing Places' Great Cushion Cover Swap the Second

Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/tenter)
My great grandfather was a tenter in the Linen industry in Northern Ireland in the very early 20th century. Tenterhooks were used to hold and stretch the linen.
On tenterhooks has become a saying for delicately balanced tension. Like waiting for a cushion picture!  0_0

@wrenkins when we came across 'tenter in a wincey factory' in a census while doing family history we looked it up so we know about tenters and tenterhooks. Don't know if we had any tenters in the family but one of my grandmothers made shirts in a factory in Derry/Londonderry so that's where my sewing gene comes from.  :D
Title: Re: The Sewing Places' Great Cushion Cover Swap the Second
Post by: WendyW on April 07, 2019, 21:59:32 PM
I had to look "wincey" up, too.  I knew it was a fabric but not what kind. I've run across the word in books, usually describing a dress or shirt, and always in a situation that gave me the impression that it was a cheap fabric that respectable people wouldn't wear- on orphans or other such persons, not on little rich girls.

You never hear of wincey nowadays but I remember winceyette being a fabric used in nightdresses snd pyjamas  when I was a child.

Post by: WendyW on April 08, 2019, 21:02:13 PM
I'm glad you like it, @Sakar ! This was my first attempt at curved piecing. It wasn't as bad as I was fearing, but it's a lot putzier than I'd want to mess with for a whole quilt. This was a good project to try it out.  The quilting took less time than the curves. The cherries and the striped piece down in the corner were only included because I didn't have enough yellow scraps; the cherries do look pretty cute on there though!

Yes it is lovely to receive a lil something out of the blue isnt it Cheesecake? Makes you feel that someone, somewhere remembers you exist and cares.

Who was your swapee last year Cheesecake ? because that is a truly spectacular cushion next to Wrenkies fine example ... which of course will go perfectly with the cot quilt that was made for your lil one.

Hope Liesl's being a good girl and you're not feeling too kn***ered ... It does get better, honest!

I was going to make one of those toy things that @Sakar made with the bits of cord and wooden beads but I wasn't sure I could trust myself not to choke the poor child so when Imi and Brenda came up with the quilt idea I used my spare star instead as we had loads of people on board.  0_0
I'm so glad you like it. If I'd had any wit I could have used the same background as the other one but I made it to match the quilt instead.  8)

ps you'll notice I didn't even attempt Brenda's teeny tiny eye-wateringly weeny corner stars!  :S
