Sewing Machines / Re: Machine for my Mum

Anthony, have a look of my post dated 25 January in Haberdashery which will tell you not what to do.  I second Greybird’s comment as I always use Schmitz which I usually buy from The Ironing Press Company and I think they sell through eBay or Amazon.

I have and still use the DVF wrap dress pattern which I bought in 1980 but I’m not impressed by any of the other patterns.

@Ouryve & @BrendaP   Thank you both for the information and I agree the colours aren’t that subtle so I don’t think I will bother to try it.

Has anyone used Maraflex thread and, if so, would they recommend it?

The Haberdashery / Re: What needles?

I think I’ve mentioned before that my elderly NDN only had one needle which was probably about 35/40 years old that she used to sharpen when it became blunt.  She thought I was very extravagant concerning needles, also my MiL only ever used a size 14 for everything but only changed if they broke.

A friend bought a red suit from Biba’s first shop in Kensington Church Street and when she had it cleaned it came back two different shades of red.  It put me off buying from Biba but I used to make most of my clothes in those days.

I had to stop halfway through cutting out my top and I'm going to finish cutting out facings and interfacing so that I can start sewing my top but probably won't start sewing until tomorrow.

@AnthonyExmouth   I'm sure your Mum will enjoy her new machine and there is plenty of really good advice on this forum as well as on YouTube.  I too bought an ex-display model but I had used it in a class when my old machine packed up on me.

I think you would be better off buying from a local dealer as you will have after-sales service which you don't get if you buy on line or from somewhere like John Lewis or Argos for example.  Perhaps it would be a good idea to take your mother with you when you finally buy a machine so that she can choose.

A Janome every time, also perhaps you could arrange for your mother to have a “get to know your machine” class as I think she would find this helpful.

Sewing Machines / Re: All about Sewing Machine Needles

I've read through all the information and think it's good and better than the Schmetz information sheets.
As it is difficult to buy specialist needles locally I buy my Schmetz needles from the Ironing Press Company, they are usually delivered by return of post and, as a bonus, a needle threader is included.

Patterns Discussion / Re: Zero Waste Patterns
« on: January 08, 2024, 13:50:57 PM »
I'm glad I'm not the only one who is a bit sceptical about ZW patterns.  I've always found that most pattern companies tend to over-state the amount of fabric required.  Also if one buys fabric on line it's usually sold in half-metres so one buys more than needed so defeating the object of ZW.

I haven't been very inspired by any of the ZW patterns as they all seem to be baggy, shapeless, and not very flattering but   perhaps they look better when made up.
