I didn't get up this morning with any idea of buying a new machine but I just have! After my nightmares with the curtains yesterday I thought I had sorted out the problem but having unpicked it all (again!) I have had the same problem again today. I haven't a hope of getting the machine serviced in the near future, so I did what several of you have recommended and phoned SMD. I spoke to Dave, not Russell but I can recommend him just as highly! After explaining what I wanted and needed I have bought an Elna Experience 520S, which I think is what my daughter bought last year. It's coming Wednesday!

New machine. Enjoy!

After several visits and phone calls, SMD have been great, I hope you love your new machine.

Enjoy your new machine @Greybird

This (https://www.sewingmachines.co.uk/experience-520s/) is the the one I have bought. It is the same as the one my daughter bought - except that hers is just 520 (no S) - and she is very pleased with it. Now I can't wait. I shall have to pack the old one away for now and sort out which things won't work with the new machine.

Lovely!

My Elna often comes out when the new Pfaff won't sew something! I really only bought the new Pfaff cos the Elna's buttonholes weren't balanced on each side, and there was no way to adjust it that I could find.

Congratulations it’s always nice to have a new toy to play with
-
Congratulations @Greybird I love my elna, I have the 6200 Decorator's touch and I love it :toast:

Lovely machine, I have an Elna 6600, nearly 20 years old now and I still love it. Elna are the same 'stable' as Janome so most of my machine feet fit both machines (I have a Horizon as well).
Enjoy your new toy.

@Greybird Really hope you'll be pleased with your new toy

@Greybird Today is Wednesday! :)
You must be so excited.
Enjoy the new addition to your family. :)
-
I think I am excited for you :loveit:
-
I suppose getting a new machine is like a man (usually) getting a new car.

I was looking at the 6600 Quilters touch when I bought mine. They look like the same body and now seeing yours I wish I had gone for that one. The knee lift would be so useful. :)

You don't mess about do you. I have dithering about a new embroidery machine for weeks now.

Well it came! About 5 minutes before Tesco's did, so I only had time to take it out of the box and switch it on before I plunged into washing the shopping. By the time I'd done that there wasn't much afternoon left but I did have a little go and it's lovely! Lots of it is exactly the as my Emerald so it didn't feel too unfamiliar. It doesn't have the nice hard drop-over cover, only a thin plastic one so I can see me making one for it. Kneelift @Lilian ? Have I got one? Not sure what it is. I shall spend more time getting to know it tomorrow.
My decision to buy it was quick, I know, but I can't get the other one serviced/repaired in the near future and I really couldn't be without a functioning machine in the meantime. I was lucky enough to have a little money at my disposal and it seemed like a good use for it. When I get the Emerald fixed, if no-one in the family wants it I'll probably sell it.

You'll know if theres a knee lift @Greybird ... there'll be a hole in the front of the machine towards the base and a gurt big thing in the packaging that fits into it!

Ah no - I definitely haven't got one of those!
-
Yep, that's what mine looks like. I've never used it though.
What are the advantages of a knee lift please? It looks cumbersome to me
-
If you're quilting and want to move from one point to another you can keep both hands on the fabric and lift the presser foot with your knee.
I was sceptical, but my Megaquilter came with one, and it's very easy and instinctive to use it. I haven't tried it properly yet though, just in practice...
-
Thanks @Acorn I
cant don't machine quilt. Does anyone use it for piecing?
-
Got to love a knee lift - really helps to lift the foot when the needle is down. However I do get confused sometimes as my old Singer 201K has a knee push mechanism to drive it instead of a foot pedal - confusion sometimes reigns!
-
I have a knee lift with my 99k, but don't often use it. Not because it wouldn't be very useful, I just forget about it...

New machine, lovely! That'll lift the spirits.
My new machine is nearly a year old now and it still makes me happy to use it. It has a knee lift, a completely new thing to me. It is very useful when making a batch of face masks.
-
Ooh fantastic, @Greybird !! Have fun playing with it (when you get time!) xx
-
I havent used either of mine ... I had one with the Splurge .... and The Splurgess has got an automatic foot-hover setting thing??!!
What IS it called ??
-
Enjoy your machine @Greybird . Have your Emerald serviced and keep as a spare, I have 2 machines and alternate so neither feels left out.
I have knee lifts with both my machines and sometimes I find myself using it when it isn't even attached but yes it can be very useful.
-
Thank you @maliw ! I had been feeling that I was somehow betraying my Emerald. I have loved it for so long that the thought of selling it was making me feel uneasy. I think I will keep it!

Thank you @William . I'm very pleased with the machine. It seems to have solved all my difficulties with the curtains. I had intended selling my Emerald but have changed my mind. A lot of the fittings (can't think of the right word!) on the new one - needle plate, threading arrangement etc - are identical to those on the Emerald so I had hoped to use some of the clip on feet on the Elna. However, it has a strange arrangement whereby the feet do not just clip in, the foot comes down and grabs them and the little bar is thinner on the Elna feet. I don't think I can get, for instance, a double
piping foot for it. I have decided to get the Emerald serviced when I can and keep it.
