A Good Yarn / Re: AUTUMN SOCK KNIT ALONG. 2023 New
« on: February 03, 2024, 15:08:33 PM »
Has anybody crocheted socks?

It’s never crossed my mind to try but I’ve just seen a pattern. I’ve some DK that needs using and I really need a couple of pairs of warm socks and no real time to make them. Crochet would be much quicker than knitting.

It’s on my list @SewRuthieSews , but first I need to source the right fabric. It asks for a stable knit and I don’t want to risk buying on line when I can’t have a good feel of the fabric.

I really need a smartish jacket and this fits the bill.

I watched Karina Trinidad’s YouTube video just the other evening so definitely up for it, just need to go fabric shopping.

In the wardrobe / Re: What were your favorite makes in 2023?
« on: January 11, 2024, 10:43:31 AM »
My most well received make was a set of matching casual shirts for SIL and the two GSs.  The fabric is truly hideous depicting characters from various horror films, SILs favourite genre.  By the time I’d tried to match all those silly little men three times I was heartily sick of them.

The finished shirts looked better than this by the time I had finished and the all opened them on Christmas Day and promptly put the on.
My sewjo is up and running at the moment so making the most of it whilst it’s here.

Sewing Machines / Re: Resurrecting an old lady

It’s fairly fine leather @HenriettaMaria, my Janome can cope easily with two layers and if I take it gently I’ve sewn three layers but four is a step too far.

I won’t be using anything any thicker.

Before I blow all my pocket money on a Jack HD2 I am wondering how my Singer 498 would cope with leather.

I’ve not used it for years and am wondering what I might need to do to get it running again. It was serviced not long before I upgraded and the plastic gears were replaced. I assume an oil and gentle cuddle should be enough and I’ll see how it is sewing before I chuck some leather under the needle.

I’m happy to pay for a service if I think it’s going to be strong enough for several layers of leather.

I want to make my GD a simple gathered dress similar to this https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc143233750
I have some awesome Wednesday Addams fabric she will adore.
I have a basic long sleeved tee shirt pattern that fits well so intend to just add a gathered skirt.
Is there any magic ratio for calculating the width of the gathered part or am I overthinking this as usual?

I’ve had novelty prints including a Klimt print. The prices were fine and delivery was quick.

I intend to explore more after Christmas.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Water soluble tissue

Oh Bill I’ve just seen this, how kind. I only need a piece about 25cm by 25cm.

Anything you need for a swapsie?

On FB I’ve seen a video of someone drawing a design onto what looks like lightweight interfacing, putting it onto fabric and then embroidering the design. They then rinse away the ‘interfacing’.

This would be perfect for me to transfer a Japanese symbol onto a bag that I am sashiko stitching for a friend.

I’m not sure what I’m looking for, is it wash away stabiliser?
