Patterns Discussion / Re: Drafting a coat collar ?
« on: October 05, 2019, 18:11:35 PM »
@Lizzy777 thank you ! However the Butterick one is more tailored than the one I tried on. There are lots of loose coats this season, some of them really look like nightgown and you have to add carefully chosen details to make the difference. >:)

I'm very excited because I'm going to participate with a transitional coat project. I just tried this coat on today and I fell in love ! Better on me than on the pictures because I made sure it hanged correctly

I just bought 3 meters of navy boiled wool online. Should be delivered within a week, enough time to finish the slipcover I'm currently working on and adding a shawl collar to Burda 6987...
UPDATE : after thinking a bit I decided to use another pattern, without the bust darts and with larger armscyes and one piece sleeves. This will be simpler to sew in an unlined coat and moreover, it's closer to the original design. The new pattern will be Burdastyle 2017-10-102

Patterns Discussion / Drafting a coat collar ?
« on: September 19, 2019, 12:16:30 PM »
Hello !
I recently tried this coat on in a store and I really liked the fit. Well defined shoulders , long enough and trendy relaxed shape and collar. However, it's only offered in colors I'm not fond of.

I found Burda 6987 in my pattern box and I wonder if I could add a collar to it. The manufactured one was a shawl collar, I mean cut in the same piece as the front and no collar stand. Your opinion and advice ? Thank you !

Embroidery and Embellishment / Re: Free motion embroidery

I once tried it thanks to some YT videos, and I finally learned how to use the mysterious transparent plate that came with my machine accessories. But I mainly made clusters of circles looking somewhat like soap foam. Except from a few samples, I never completed any finished project.
You seem to have achieved quite a good command of this technique. I love the pirate embroidery !

Dolls and Toys / Re: Tilda - Cloth dolls
« on: April 25, 2019, 17:23:45 PM »
Thank you. Since I posted I discovered Tilda is a fabric brand, branching out into other things such as dolls and quilts. But it seems lots of patterns are circulating on the web so I wasn't 100% sure.

Dolls and Toys / Tilda - Cloth dolls
« on: April 25, 2019, 13:18:59 PM »
Hello ! I've lost my sewing mojo but I recently stumbled upon cloth dolls on the internet and got interested in them.
I'd like to know if Tilda doll is a generic name or a specific brand, at least originally. Is a Tilda made always the same way, with the head and torso cut in one piece and added arms ? Do you have any website or book recommandation if I want to try my hand at making one (or a few !) ?
Thank you for your help.

Hi, I'm new... / Re: Bonjour!

Bienvenue ! I'm so glad you found a welcoming community where you settled. I'm French so if you need any help with sewing vocabulary just PM me. I'm not sewing much right now as we're preparing to move to a different region, but I'd be delighted to help.

Our living room is currently furnished with a red armchair and a teal sofa. Both are quite worn out so I have grand plans about making taupe or cream slipcovers and colorful seasonal cushions. However, as we're moving soon, buying a huge amount of fabric is not the wisest thing to do. I think I'm just going to make cushion covers and the slipcovers will have to wait until next summer. In the meantime, decluttering can be fun and lead to happy discoveries of treasures long forgotten in the depth of the fabric stash.

Brenda, they're lovely, especially the ones with the hares. They remind me of linocuts.
I do agree sometimes things are not worth making yourself, but it depends on 1) do I already have the fabric and notions in my stash  2) is it fun (for me) to make  :snip:

You could make the front in stripes, the back in fur. Two in one.

It could work in a perfect home. But our cushions would never be on the "right" side

House Beautiful / seasonal cushion covers

I've had this idea for years about having cosy warm color cushion covers in winter (possibly wool or faux fur) and changing to something freshening like white and blue stripes in the summer. But it meant finding storage for the out of season covers.
Then I had an idea : why not sew reversible covers ? Brilliant. Then I tried to figure out how to sew them. And the conclusion was sooooo simple : just make 2 regular covers and use one on top of the other !  :toast:

Anyone doing this ?

Tearing wool fabric? Is that even possible?

They didn't know it was impossible, so they did it !

Aha ! I haven't though of that ! I'm going to try it. I have only a bit more than 2m so it's perfectly doable. Thank you. (The weave is too stiff to allow for pulled threads, I've tried before tearing).
