Title: Pretty Little Things and harmful dyes
Post by: sewmuchmore on November 01, 2019, 09:10:08 AM
Article (https://peppermintmag.com/fast-fashion-brand-slammed-for-dangerous-dyes/) in Peppermint mag. I should be shocked but it doesn't surprise me. I bet they are not the only brand guilty of this.

Only began to think about the harmful nature of dyes while I have been reading World Without End - Medieval Novel, Ken Follet, and seeing a programme called a Stitch in Time.  Although neither mention the dangers of dying, it did make me think that it can't be an altogether safe procedure - even with 'natural' dyes, without protective clothing.

Never crossed my mind that modern dyes could be dangerous.

Pretty little things are not the only culprits given that

The use of AZO dyes is still widespread in most garment-producing countries, including in India, Turkey, and in China

the main suppliers of our clothes and fabrics.

I hate articles like these.  Firstly, you will never get a natural dye that is neon (as quoted in the article), it doesn't exist in nature.  Secondly, it says "suspected carcinogenic" and also states that no studies exist to prove one way or the other.  This is scaremongering and more importantly unfair to Pretty Little Things, especially as many other companies will use those dyes, but have not been named.  If an article like that is being produced, IMO it should be about the dyes directly and not so much the company.  It is biased and unfair and given that it states Pretty Little Things has grown faster than designer brands, I question who is actually behind the article.

What's disturbing to me is the picture with the dye powders on bare hands.  I've done a fair amount of dyeing in the past and always wore gloves and dust mask while mixing.
