I loved the colourful strip sets more before I added the black background pieces, but I'm hoping that once the mostly yellow #6 gets added in, it will spark it up. It's just difficult to know since the quilt's a mystery! Time will tell. 0_0

Apologies to Lowie....I'm sorry...I know, I know, green...I can see you wincing all the way from here! And if I am too be completely honest Lowie, you brought a little smile to my face when I pounced on these fabrics in the remnant bin.....just where I reckon you'd turf 'em!!!!
The greens in my fabric 2 are actually quite vibrant...they've washed out a bit with the phone pic and fabric 1 (my background) is a very soft lemon with a swirl in it.

And, whilst I'm ducking for cover here (ducks behind sofa 0_0) would you like to hazard a guess at what my number 6 fabric is as it isn't in the photos? Here's some clues....fabric 3 and 4 have to be lighter shades than fabric 6, and fabric 6 has to be dark to offset my light fabric 1....and given that 3 and 4 are light green, and mid green...whaddya reckon fabric 6 is??????? Sorry my sweet! 0_0

@Catlar: I can understand what your are going through.

First I wanted to make the crib (whatever a "crib" is, I couldn't finde any translation), but then I looked at the colours and I decided to make something bigger, but I knew right away, that I would have enough fabric.

So I have started cutting and sewing, and my fabric-shop is working on finding more of these fabrics for me :) She will call me on Tuesday, which size I can gain for ;)

Here is my latest fabric joice (after a last consultation with our "boss" ;)) And the first blocks :D

I started with the crib size, but made it bigger (as all the quilts are different sizes of square and a cot size is a rectangle)
to fit a childs cot (I hope)

When I first made it I expanded it from a wall hanging to a 64" sq lap/single quilt...(covers a double bed tho.)
And as all the prep is in the early stages it goes together really fast.
I made the example that you are following in a weekend...Really!!!

You can really have some fun with the design!

Thanks. I've never done a black background before. I like my colours but I'm reserving judgment till it's all done. I hope there are enough non black colours to keep it bright. We'll see! I guess that's why they call it a mystery quilt!

I had the same problem ;) just count your sewn parts from the former clues and you should recognize, to which size you were going :D

Did you miss someone misunderstanding the phrase'ducks behind the sofa'? It is a way of saying 'I'm going to hide down here', often used when watching the scary monster on Doctor Who, or having said something impertinent, to hide from the person you've just upset. But someone thought the ducks were of the feathered variety and did wonder 'What are the ducks doing behind the sofa??' and it's become a 'dark side' joke. :D

Says who? I always make flying geese with a qst and 2 hsts. (I don't see the point of wasting expensive fabric by cutting bits off the squares and rectangles) and no one has ever called me a purist - though there's always a first time :).

Clue 5 is hovering on the horizon....

and as things are going to move very fast from now on, I am going to release one clue a week from Saturday the 15th July!

Try and make sure you are up to date and you will find that having squared up your blocks as you went along things are going to fly by....

The last clue will be released on the first Saturday in August and then it will be up to you....
I firmly hope to see some beautiful finished quilts by the Autumn.

When I first did this, it started as a crib size and turned into a single ...

The genius of this Tut is that you have a written record of the amount of blocks you need for each size within each clue,
so if you decide to up-size, you just make more of the relevant blocks!

Post by: Yankee Doodle on July 09, 2017, 11:19:29 AM: A design improvement opportunity, that's what it was. It wasn't just that I screwed up and didn't buy enough of Fabric Number Six. Really.

So I have switched from a yellow Fabric 6 to lime green. With my black background it should really be my lightest fabric and I'm not sure it is, but I like it anyway and I'm not redoing those half square triangles for a third time, so if it all comes out wrong, I take full responsibility. :-) I think it'll be fine.

So here is redone Clue 3 and Clue 4. My half square triangles are perfect but the geese came out a hair smaller than they should be. I worried about that for a minute or two but then I thought about the countless other quilts I've made with flying geese that were probably also a hair too small and I got over it.

I'm going to try to keep up with the next clues but we're in the middle of furiously painting ceilings and walls and baseboards before new carpet installation (woohooo!) so it's gonna be difficult! If you don't hear much outa me for a while, that's why!

'scuse the crappy picture but I just laid out the blocks on the bed in varying combinations and took a picture of each to see what looked right. It was early evening so bad light. I will take a better pic when I have joined the blocks.

I will be looking for the backing at FOQ on Thursday hoping to find a backing fabric as it is 48 wide. If not then I'll look to see if they have any of the no2 fabric which is flowery on a blue background but I will need to piece that.

For now I have hung it folded lightly in two using a hanger from a wall light.

My local quilt shoppe just had their anniversary celebration week and they always display quilts made by their students and customers. The owners had seen my mystery quilt top and asked if they could display it. I'm told it was a hit!

It's actually called Christmas Storm At Sea and is quite small but I'm just making more blocks to make it a bed size. It was supposed to be a free download but was redirected to Craftsy and paid the princely sum of 86 centimos. Bargain! :)

I downloaded the Christmas SAS, because I loved the central pattern, and also because whenever I clicked the download link I was taken to that pattern in Craftsy. As far as I can see, the actual construction is the same and there is an instructional video (very short) which tells you how to do the double SAS as well. You can also get colouring sheets in case you want to play around with different colourways and there are illustrations of some different ones.
This is how far I've got so far, lots to do yet.
I'm doing it in sections to avoid wrestling a whole quilt through my quite small machine and it seems to be working ok.

I have joined my mystery quilt blocks. It's grown on me as I've gone along. The 2 light coloured fabrics grated to start and I did consider changing them but that's not in the spirit of the mystery quilt is it. There's nothing wrong with them (the colours were matched with the selvedge dots of the strawberry fabric) it's just that they don't do what they are supposed to in the design but when you're up close that doesn't really matter.

Border: The only fabric with any significant amount leftover is the strawberry and I can get hold of some more of the green fabric (it's Makower Vintage Journal, still available in some places). The remainder of the fabrics came from a shop that only stayed open for about 3 months. I think a wide strawberry border could end up a bit eye squiff inducing so my current thought is (bottom picture) to get some more of the green and do a 1 1/2" strawberry border with a small green flange (I like flanges) and also use the green to bind. I thought that introducing a bit more of the green might make it seem a bit less 'accidental' in the body of the quilt.

Any views on that plan?

Whoever said you can't get a quart into a pint pot, or in this case, you can't get a quart out of a pint pot, hadn't seen me making 9 four patches out of a piece of fabric the size of your thumb nail, with the help of my wonderful Stripology ruler from Creative Grids. (Other strip cutting rulers blah, blah, blah.)

Love the colours and it reminds me of the early days of TSP. Pic when it's quilted and bound. :P
