Title: "Hexactly" quilt...almost finished
Post by: rubywishes on March 04, 2017, 23:13:12 PM
Almost got this quilt finished. I decided to straight line quilt it to accentuate the columns, the open empty spaces and the hexagons, and also to try to divert the eye from the 3 different coloured whites I ended up having to use. I know, I know, lesson learnt there big time.....make sure you have enough blooming fabric before you start a project!

So today I've got about an hour of quilting left and then I just have to square it up and do the binding. I've got a nice strong purple for the binding which I think will look good. Not sure what I am going to do with this one once it is finished.

Oh that's beautiful !!!

I hate the squaring up bit of a quilt, mostly because I don't have enough space to lie it out correctly!  :(

If you don't know what to do with it, you could always send it over to Deepest Darkest, Dorset ??!! :D

Congratulation Honey.....Splendid job!

That is lovely. I've yet to make one where the quilting is really a feature. I do love trying out free motion quilting, but it takes such a lot of practice to be perfect :P. Whoever gets yours will be very lucky. I'm sure they'll love it!

It is very nice indeed. What's on the back?

A most disappointing white on white fabric. I accidentally purchased the wrong fabric (picked up the wrong bolt after an eon of indecision at the store) and didn't realise until I'd gotten home. Couldn't see myself ever wanting to use it so as it cost close to $65 AUS I wasn't about to stuff it in a cupboard and not use it. It's not hideous or anything, it's just weird  feeling and the machine didn't like it either...blunted the blooming heck out of my needles. It's only saving grace is that it is white.....bland, neutral white.....and now I'm moving on...honest I am....no emotional scarring here, or wincing every time I look at the back of the quilt.....honest...I'm just fine....sob :'(

I never square up a quilt.....how do you do it?.....why would you do it? Mine always look ok  -<

I square up my quilts because the OCD in me won't let me "not"! That's not to say that all my quilts end up being perfectly square...they just end up "as square as I can get them!".  0_0  0_0   I aim to have the 2 diagonal measurements equal and then take measurements through the top, the middle and the bottom of the length, and then the width. Hopefully all 3 measurements are within about 2cm of each other. Now that's not square, but it's "square enough" for me. For some reason though with this quilt, with all the heavy quilting I did and my not so deft handling of it, I somehow have a discrepancy of 2cm in my length measurement from one side to the other. I'm scratching my head a bit because my diagonals are spot on so I'm not sure what the heck has happened and I daren't start chopping into it 'cause it will stuff up my equal diagonals so....with a glass of red in my hand and looking at the quilt through slightly grubby spectacles it doesn't look wonky so it's staying "as is". Lovely dark purple binding is made and will get stitched on at the end of the working week.

Actually, the fish slapping originated from the TSF Avengers idea which I sprouted on the forum ages and ages back. In the beginning there was much talk of uniforms and weapons of choice for the act of avenging....somehow the majority opted for fish slapping as the weapon of choice......I never liked fish, I forget what my choice was but the majority won out and ran with it.  Then there was much talk of Avengers travelling "en masse" to "avenge" those in need.....my living across the sea saw me factored out at this point.....travel time you know. >:)

I buy embroidered name labels ( the kind you get for children's school clothes). You can buy 2 line ones, so mine say " Made for you by Sheila...." and also include my home town . They are then all ready to sew to any quilt and I usually just quilt the year into the quilt. I also got some done with washing instructions as people are so often scared to wash quilts.
That means that unless I really want to ( for special people) I don't need to prepare a quilt label for every quilt.

I just write my name, home town UK and the date on the back of the quilt with a permanent marker, (doesn't work so well on dark fabrics!) unless it's something special (rarely) when I might get a bit more creative.

Oh my, oh my, you won't believe what I have just spent the last 2.5 hours doing? I attached my beautiful deep purple binding to Hexactly this afternoon and was just about to throw it into the washing machine for its virgin wash when...........Oh no, I hate the purple...it takes the eyes away from the Hexagons and puts a fence around my endless white columns...blah, yeuk, crisis and lots of mutterings and bad words. So I left it on the floor for the day...kept peeking at it but no, it still looked wrong. So 2.5 hours, and one rather large glass of red later I've got the binding all off.

I have a headache and I need a cup of tea...badly.   :'(  But..... I have a day off tomorrow so white binding will be going on and all will be well in my world again.  8) Oh....do I have enough white in my stash? Wait, yes of course I do, surely I do (....breaking out in a cold sweat here, someone tell me I do please).  I think I do......I will have to go and have a rummage after the cup of tea. Oh dear......

For a moment I thought you were going to say the purple dye ran. Phew!

Bindings are like that. I had a long discussion with a friend last week about a little wall hanging we've made for a show (to keep up the numbers and give other people something to criticise). She had wanted to put a on dark blue binding, but decided it looked 'wrong' (fortunately before she put it on) and it took us quite a while to audition and agree on one that was 'right'. It's like framing a picture - you need a frame but you don't want it to dominate the picture. You just settle down quietly tomorrow and put the white on. It will look better and you can look at it without wincing ever after.

Poor you Ruby!
Least you're getting lots of binding practice!

and I'm so with you in the ... Surely I've got some more of/enough of this fabric somewhere in my voluminous stash!!

Well you know I am...
How many times has the cry gone up...Does anyone have/know of where I can get some of this????
Its only 10 years old, I can't believe its not in stock anymore (really, you bought it in the sale!!!)

Also Rubes, re different whites...When I started Pink I was using from my stash and naturally and of course that was soon used up so there are certainly two different whites in my latest creation! (and it shows, to me at least! (rolleyes smilie)

Sometimes the frame is so important..DD screen prints and has just done an exhibition she ordered 20 cream mounts for the prints .. + one dark grey one for me for a print I wanted to frame ... they arrived and she tried her cream.. totally different from the sample she had ordered from ..tried mine and it looked fabulous so she emailed the company and the replaced them with the dark grey at no cost to herself... sometimes problems work for you :D

At present I'm  (well not right now, cos we are decorating the kitchen and bathroom) but I was QAYG'ing Pink.
I've got two halves done and am ready (when I next get a sewing day) to join the last long seam.

Instead of hand-stitching the back joining strip down I'm blanket stitching it (with the machine)

I'm planning on BS'ing the binding down too (like I did on the Skandi)

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/22kAD4LW-e3kMGWCG67EFWZGJh6VsDGWptQ0ZqoSzZiIjjBkupUx71vu5M6SzfR5KD9uIftswu9nHADv7OS3lEH3QQV31TYby-jyk28QXRDajldNMHGUBWZ7ksFRhZnGC_xJyjX0fPkljdiF6pN7JUt02pag1zW7rLl6awjkJ5wL_wLp3l2idNct2wqmBCukBogPVWXk57aHltfsPFkyWoKOY5OTRqrCWW-bKMIurmlojO_TP6u1t4A3kXSE26439D0jeeYsy8fkjeuh_iQ94OF3S5fZvHjIQIt78mRHG_1iXMwYDLEe06GQGMClclg7lt_jVA8I1pkWbBti0IN4ftW2__o6LAUWonU7chL9rXWP4Lm6JsfcKKStYt4IaEhwmpDXJkme6ZWPn72QkR1hL24App6W5tbdzf7PcpfJKoOBAYFlsN400cJRfHbV_Z4dgz05gNsj-G6FtOCllrdv82lVD197RkZLEJdKhxYBgGjQfsMk_6se6CCKBQTgPZl5skzTIvjdlz-P_buuiJ9SWgzVPBGzsA9zatn76OppNR7Vo1qcGaVBcKhVrcToJcqDXSu83r3qJye8l2Aq190lN8KGGdaUqOHn38ldTIrRU5p6Qg=w878-h658-no)

so it will be super strong!

If the quilts I have made can stand up to be dragged outside for picnics, used for gymnastics on the grass, been weed on (not by me  0_0) and sicked up on (also not me) and chucked in the was repeatedly, I'm sure yours would be just grand in the wash!

This thread is sewing forum at it's best. Lots of gorgeous quilts to look at. Lots of friendly banter. Lots of advice /good ideas/encouragement.  It's so interesting to find out what other people regard as necessary or not and to see that the quilt police don't get the final say on everything!

 <3 Rubywishes I ADORE your quilt!  <3

In the time it took you to put on a binding, decide against it and sew on a new one I only managed to sew two foundation pieced animals from The Quiters Ark by Margaret Rolfe a compatriot of yours. Foundation piecing is not my favourite activity but needs must when you decide to make, what you'd originally planned as a wall hanging and started years ago from fabrics bought off e-bay, into a quillow. If I ever finish it I'll certainly post pics .... I'll be so proud to actually finish something but most of my projects stall at the quilting stage (sigh)

Oh and regarding bindings/edgings. It's not noticeable on the photo but the wall hanging on my avatar has a tiny slip of green between the yellow and the blue edge. In fact it's barely noticable in the flesh but it really does make a difference. It was an idea I read about while working on the wall hanging and decided to try.

It was several years ago so I've forgotten what it was called I think they called it a 'slip'. Basically to get it that thin the slip is folded and 'slipped' in between the quilt and it's border. It's when you don't actually need/want to introduce another colour and yet something is needed to give it a bit of oomph. In this case green, a mixture of the two colours, fitted the bill.  :)

It reminded me of the time when I was .... sorry going to have to use a word you are not keen on at the moment lol ...... decorating the front room. I was so pleased with the result of my hard work and cleared up to admire it.   Big disappointment it had all fallen flat when just moments before it had looked so good.  mmmmmm realised that the green chair I'd been standing on while I finished off the blue wall was what had made the difference ....moved it back and it all looked good again.

The solution? I cut up a green skirt and embroidered the Cern Abbas Giant. This picture has been a talking point ever since! He gets decorated for Christmas :)

He's a very friendly and helpful giant .... but strangely my male visitors complain that he makes them feel inadequate. Can't think why  ;)
