In the wardrobe / Re: Oversized hooded sweatshirt/fleece
« on: November 16, 2023, 11:57:35 AM »
My Oodie was a gift last Christmas, it is heavy the outer layer is sort of velvety and lovely and soft, whilst the inner is a fur fabric of some sort.  It certainly is warm, and the cuffs on the sleeve are really snug, however I find it difficult to get off, I need to stand up to pull the hem up towards the waist, then sit down again, and then pull my arms out of the sleeves so in effect I am in a sort of bag and then push the Oodie up over my head from the inside.  Now early this autumn I was using this as I was very cold in the evenings and I certainly warmed up and all I had on my top half underneath was a tee shirt.  My Oodie has an enormous  pocket across the tummy area useful for putting the hands in to keep warm but it does make that area rather thick, and I also have a hood as well, again this is the outer fabric plus an inner lining of the fur fabric.

I think it would quite easy to make something similar, I am intrigued as to how they have got the cuff onto the sleeves  it rather looks as though they made a sandwich of the sleeve with the cuff on the inside so when sewn together and turned the right way out there are no raw edges showing at all.

If you want anymore information let me know, I am rather late up today and just off to have my shower, but I can take some photos of various parts of this if that would help - just let me know.

Sewing Machines / Re: Getting on my own nerves!
« on: November 11, 2023, 15:10:33 PM »
Oh have fun KayK your new machine sounds as though you will have plenty to keep you occupied for the next few weeks before the move and then after.  Now why not treat yourself to another Horn cabinet and get rid of the table, and if you get a new cabinet - well with a move to a new house, why not treat yourself as I am sure you will have a lovely sewing room or two to play with, and then get the various plexi's cut for each of your machines, I don't think you will regret it.  I much prefer sewing in the 'flatbed' mode I even use this position with my overlocker and originally had a plexi cut to fit the overlocker at the time - now no longer, but I asked Horn and they supplied me with a piece of a plexi that fits between the edge of the cut out on the cabinet top and the overlocker - makes life so much easier sewing this way without drag.  Whilst Horn do not keep templates of all the various overlockers I made one myself by sitting the overlocker on the kitchen table and then stacking small paperback books up close and all around the overlocker until they reached the top where the feed dogs are, and then once this was all level I put some cardboard folders over the top for evenness and then some brown paper and drew around all the overlocker parts and they cut a plexi from this and it worked beautifully.

Also a long time ago now Horn were offering the opportunity to have a whole plexi at a sensible price and then this can be used as a light table, all you need is to have the platform at the lower level and stand a lamp or a small light on this.

I am here this afternoon now going to try and get a collar sorted, need to balance some awkward floral print - i.e. bunches of flowers,  so that they look right at the front, I may have to have a seam in the top collar piece just so the fronts do not look too bad.  I will start with drafting the collar full length and then see how that looks when laid on the fabric and go from there.

Fun with Fabric / Fabric for men's PJ's
« on: November 01, 2023, 11:22:15 AM »
Please can anyone suggest where I might go on line (not ebay though) for suitable knit fabric for men's PJ's, but not the very thin curl up at the edges type of knit.  Having spent 10 days in hospital recently my husband now realises that he needs some new PJ's, (I have mended and patched his existing ones), and he refuses to pay M&S £35 or more for new ones. Surely I can make them a lot cheaper and also ones that will not disintegrate in a few months time.  However I am at a loss to know where to go looking for suitable knit fabric preferably here in the UK, and something that is a little more sturdy than the very thin knits.

I am here as well - just trying to sew a bit in the hopes that by sewing a little bit at a time will I will eventually get this finished, the light however is not particularly good - thank heaven for Daylight bulbs and gadgets.

Bodgeitandscarper there is a lady in Norfolk - Janet Spink and she used to write books/demonstrate on all things Babylock maybe worth getting in touch with her for some up to date advice on this model.  Have fun.

When I bought my Horn cabinet I also made a template of my then overlocker and asked for a plexi to be cut for that too and it was sheer bliss not having the fabric drag off the small area on the left of the overlocker.  Now I have two different overlockers, and I still use these on the Horn cabinet so that they are flat, and Horn actually supplied me with a small piece of plexi that I pop in between the overlocker and the end of the tabletop opening and thus again I have a lovely big flat work space which the fabric just slides over - my cabinet top opens towards the back - again chosen for what I needed.  I do think that if I went back to using a sewing machine or an overlocker on an ordinary table now I would not like this very much - I much prefer being able to work coming down/looking down to what I am sewing.

Managed to get quite a bit of sewing done again, plus some running repairs, now I need to get the iron out again for the next lot of pressing before I can go any further.

I have actually made some progress on the blouse I am making, and in many ways it was good to be able to sew and press the seams as I went.  This evening I have prepared more ready for tomorrow's session.

Thank you Ohsewsimple, something is afoot but what is not yet known, the doctor requested a load of blood tests, but on trying to get this booked in told 24th October What!!!!!  Apparently my husband has a very bloated tummy area, which is worrying, now I learn he is constipated - quite how when he hasn't really eaten, he has water problems, a very dry mouth and thrush in his mouth as well, and I am now told that even the earliest blood test appointment at the nearest hospital there is nothing available until 24th October and also as he is diabetic and on insulin his blood sugars are way too high.  The doctor also prescribed something like 3-6 prescriptions, which I cannot attempt to get until tomorrow,  and I am not knowing which way to turn.

To add insult to injury as well, a tooth crown came off over the weekend so I went to the dentist this morning only to be told I need a new crown, and it cannot be left too long, and I have to wait until 1st November as the dentist is going to be away as well as his short three day week.  Then I got a phone call this afternoon saying they had a cancellation for tomorrow at 10am and would I like it, but there is no way I can get there at that time - my husband was not keen on driving this morning, and the dentist wants me for an hour's appointment.  I've just got to be careful.

I am going to be busy tomorrow trying to sort out all blood  test appointments, collecting the prescriptions, trying to encourage my husband to drink something - cannot see any sewing being done either.

Managed to get my binding on the plackets of two sleeves, now pinned closed ready for some pressing, and that will be it this afternoon - just when am I going to get some more time to get this blouse finished.  Now have to stop and chivy my husband up ready for a trip to see a doctor at 5pm, - a continuation of last week really, and he is not helping himself one little bit.  He has not eaten properly, not showered, shaved, just sleeps and moans and groans, no energy, surely a fall couldn't cause all of this and I am wondering whether there is something else going on,  we shall see.
