A doll's shirt - I can do that. Well if I can get the embroidered lace to cooperate with me. I'm testing it again today as yesterday's stitch out didn't work out. The poor designer is beside herself as I'm the only one having an issue. I'm also testing the shirt pattern for her. So if all works out, I will be entering.

I'm in, for least one shirt. One question @Manuela , what exactly defines a shirt instead of a blouse?

Does it have to be striped?

@Kwaaked, no, I will correct it. thanks for alerting me.
@Starryfish, I only used the term shirt to make sure menswear is included. I had a quick google and here is the official explanation  ;)

The difference between blouse and shirt is that blouse is an outer garment, usually loose, that is similar to a shirt and reaches from the neck to the waist or below nowadays, in colloquial use, blouse refers almost always to a woman's shirt that buttons down the front while shirt is an article of clothing that is worn on the upper part of the body, and often has sleeves, either long or short, that cover the arms.

Actually Manuela, I think the Google explanation you found is a little confusing. I would say that the difference between a shirt and a blouse is merely that a blouse is more feminine than a shirt, with details such as tie-necks, frills and full sleeves. Does this sound right?

Oooo! May I join in?  I've been threatening to make OH a new shirt and just received the fabric today.  He has a taste for Liberty lawn and I indulge him once a year (maybe twice, at a push), so this would be a good motivator for me to get on with this.

I suggest that a blouse is a (feminine) type of shirt and that a shirt is an upper body garment with a buttoned opening at the front, sleeves which are stitched on, not cut as one piece with the body and a collar, or at least a collar stand.

I would add, made from a woven, rather than a stretch fabric.

Would this count as a shirt even though it has not got separate sleeves? It does have buttons.

@Manuela it's the name given to the garment ladies wore in the late Victorian / Edwardian era with a skirt. Normally with a structured high collar, cuffs, and front or back buttons. Like this one (https://blog.fidmmuseum.org/.a/6a01156f47abbe970c0134875407cc970c-pi).

I've been cutting out the pattern pieces for my grey/black flannel gingham shirt. There will be a few stretch goals for me in this project, as I want to make a tower placket and cuffs on the sleeve, and my own TNT self drafted woven top pattern doesn't include an opening cuff at all! So I will get to learn how to make a tower placket, and also have to figure out where on the sleeve to have the placket slash... I plan on trying out the placket as a sample on some scrap fabric first, as it looks sort of complicated...

@indigotiger  I had to look up tower placket! Hope you find it easy  to do.
I learnt a nice technique by unpicking a bought shirt sleeve.  It starts as a continuous binding on a rectangular opening and folds in two goes until it ends up looking like a  tower placket, but there are no cut ends inside - much better for an untidy person like me.  I have no idea what that would be called or I would post a link.  No doubt someone on here does know!

@indigotiger I posted  an excellent tutorial for a shirt sleeve placket in the Tutorials section of the forum.  It was posted on 26th July 2017 and the link is a few posts into the thread because I had trouble linking it.

I'll try a link here but if it doesn't work you should be able to find it in the Tutorials area.

That's next on my list, shirt sleeve plackets, and I too have used the same tutorial.  However, IIRC, the Vogue shirt I'm making has a one piece placket, we'll see.  It shouldn't be too bad because up to now, the fabric I'm using has been very well behaved.

@Manuela, disqualify if it doesn't meet the criteria. I'm joining into these challenges for fun but want to meet the rules.

Ann's Entry #1

Lori's Lacy Blouse with Machine Embroidery was a test pattern for a doll pattern designer. The machine embroidery was a big challenge as two of the files would not work for us. I spent several days in January trying to help the designer but to no avail. In the end I used the lace design which worked.

The machine embroidery is done using sewing thread and a fine needle which may be why there were problems with some of the files. The blouse is made from quilting cotton and was an easy test pattern. The print was chosen to give the blouse a Victorian look once the lace was added.

The blouse pattern was done like most other blouse patterns. The front which has the button placket on it was serged, turned back 1/4" and the placket topped stiched down. The button placket was added like other blouse patterns. The neck is finished with bias tape and the collar is zig zag stitched down. It works fine for this blouse though I do know of people who do this on their clothing.

This blouse was time consuming as I spent a lot of time testing the embroidery. The blouse was easy to sew though I did finish all the seams and puzzled over instructions. Part of being a pattern tester.

@Sonatine: for the purposes of this contest, we need to very careful with terminology since a google image search for 'shirtwaist' produced these results (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=shirtwaist+dress&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjIlvLv07jnAhXkQ0EAHRncDtcQ_AUoAnoECA0QBA&biw=1280&bih=672).

My definition of a shirt is this (https://i.imgur.com/Zj0fc7S.jpg).  Anything else is a blouse in my books.

@UttaRetch yes, although you've added the term 'dress' to your search! Hardly surprising that you get dresses then.

That's me put off from entering, I was excited that there was a competition I could enter with a historical garment but oh well.

The fabric chosen for the shirt is the Atelier Brunette viscose in dark green

I have a pattern and some fabric. My pattern is for a button front dress but as it has no waist seam I think it would shorten easily enough to a shirt.
I then have some cotton fabric with musical notes on it (black with white notes), which would be fun for our choir party on Monday night.
I don't normally sew shirts, but since RTW doesn't usually fit well it seems worth making the effort.

Best part of contests for me is giving me a deadline.  I need to make shirts. I have fabric(s) and pattern(s).  First up is a red patterned viscose (I think).
I wanted to use Simplicity 9618 (2001) with B,C,D cup pieces.  Must have borrowed the D cup front to help out another pattern and being a Messy Person, have forgotten to put it back in the envelope. As a penance, I have to redraw it extrapolating from the B and C pieces.  Hopefully drawn and cut out tomorrow.
Oops, just read some reviews. Measurements are finished size, not body size, forgotten that too. Time for a little resizing overall. Snug sleeves too. Well, it was a long time ago.

@toileandtrouble hope your project goes well.

Today I traced off the pattern pieces, redrew the hem, cut out, rethreaded the machines back to black and started sewing.
I now need to sew the separate components together and do buttonholes and buttons and I shall have a shirt.

SewRuthieSew' Entry

I wasn't sure to start with if I were going to enter, then several things came together.
- choir were having social event
- Prima magazine arrived and had a shirt dress pattern in it
- I came across some fabric I had bought with musical notes on it.

End result was a musical shirt!
Here's the finished shirt, looks at a distance like it might be a paisley or floral design.

But get up close and you can see the musical notes.

I'm pleased with the collar and silver stylised rose buttons.

Here's the cuff. I cut it extra wide and put 2 buttonholes in the cuff, then folded it back and used only one button through both buttonholes (sort of gives a cufflink effect).

Here's the pattern from March 2020 Prima Magazine. I measured a RTW shirt and cut a curved hem.

I am thrilled with my shirt and its perfect for the event.

Progress on my shirt - the breast pocket design is what drew me to this pattern. But I hadn’t taken the fabric into account, the pockets are totally lost on this! So I decided not to bother with the flaps, same for the epaulets!

This was a surprise in this pattern - the yoke was only a single layer. As I’ve previously made the Closet Case Kalle shirt here (http://https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,9151.0.html)
initially as a shirt dress then shortened to make a shirt, with a double layer yoke, I think this is a much nicer finish and possibly more comfortable to wear, I decided to do the same again. Didn’t use the burrito method again though like I did on the Kalle, but just turned under the seam allowances and stitched in by hand.

OK, here's my entry.  It's Vogue 1387 by Rebecca Taylor.  I just loved the look of style B, and thought I'd found the perfect fabric in the stash.  It's a poly cotton (I think), but the only description on the lable, said 'burnout'.

It should have been a fairly straightforward sew, but as usual, I made a meal of it.

1. The front band/collar stand intersection caused me trouble, as the seams needed to lay in a particular way to go under the front band, and the collar stand.  It took quite a bit of manipulation and hand sewing to finish it neatly.

2. The gathering at the back.  I knew right away that I didn't want this, so I pleated it, and I like it far better.  If I did it again, I would take some fullness out before pleating though - there's a lot of fabric there.  I also did a fabric loop to finish off, and I do like how it's turned out.

3. Sleeve placket drove me distracted, and the more I thought about it, the more I was sure I was going to get it wrong - although I've done them many times with no problems.  They turned out OK, trouble is, I don't think they suit the shirt, and if I did it again, I wouldn't do that style.

Finally, I ordered white ring snaps, but even after what I thought was careful ordering, they were smaller than the tool I use for fixing.  So I used the metal ones, and not sure they work.  I think the top snap is too high, and seems to make the bust pull a bit.

Your shirt is beautiful @b15erk. Once you do the tweaks on the pattern it looks like you'll have a great TNT blouse pattern.

I also love your shirt @SewRuthieSews. The fabric is perfect for the choir social. I'm sure it was a hit when you wore it.

Fabric Lover’s Entry No 1

I’ve finished my shirt too, initially my second choice fabric as I think it’s a bit drab on me which is why I have it on with a yellow camisole underneath. I love how it feels though and has a truly beautiful drape. It’s Simplicity 8830 https://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/94086

I shortened it quite a lot about 9 cms but I think maybe I wish I’d left the front a tad longer. For the next one I’ll go one size smaller but also longer at the front. I also cut out the pocket flaps and epaulets but as the fabric is so busy I decided to leave them off this time.

Starryfish's
first shirt is finished.
It is Ottobre 18-5-16. I made it pretty much as the instructions say, except I added an inner yoke using the burrito method. I didn't put pockets on it, as I didn't have enough fabric to match them. The pattern repeat is big on this fabric, and I only bought 1.5m. As I managed to get the fronts to match exactly I didn't want to spoil the look.

Dear all,
It would help me a lot if you could insert your pictures in the text. I am usually able to do that, but more often than not there is a system glitch that doesn’t allow me to. Today was one of those days. I just spent a long time editing two entry post, so that the pictures appear in the voting thread - sorry @Fabric Lover  I didn’t have the time to download and rotate your pictures as well.

If you don’t know how to insert your pictures, below is the attachment menu after you uploaded them. The only thing you need to do after uploading is to click the ‘insert attachment’ link (the blue bit) and it’s done.
It also helps me if you’d follow the template and have your name in the first line of your entry post (with the number of the entry if you have more than one)

Thank you for your understanding.

So my next project is the grey/black flannel shirt. There is just enough fabric to eke out most of the pattern pieces, if I cut the undercollar, inner cuffs, inner yoke, and the under placket from a complimentary fabric. Fortunately I found some suitable remnants of quilting cotton fabric, black with grey polkadots (used for a former everyday dress). I'm looking forward to the challenge of learning how to make the tower placket (http://off-the-cuff-shirtmaking.blogspot.com/2014/01/tutorial-shirt-sleeve-placket.html).

The black/grey gingham flannel shirt is completed, and my guesstimate for how long to make the sleeves turned out to be just right. I will be making a note of that on the pattern for future reference, and foresee some additional shirts (as opposed to blouses) in my future sewing at some point...

The collar and neckline of the shirt, showing two different sides of the polkadot fabric (yoke facing, and bias binding along collar shirt seam), bias and straight-of-grain use of the gingham flannel.

The successful tower placket, both closed (above), and open (below)...again showing how I used the polkadot fabric to line the cuff and also to create the inner placket.

I'll have another photo or two of how the shirt looks when I am wearing it soon....

Indigotiger's entry

what I made: Black/grey gingham flannel shirt

pattern used: My TNT personal bias front bodice pattern

about the project: I wanted to make a warm cotton flannel winter shirt, using a length of heavy work-weight gingham flannel. My TNT pattern has 3/4 length sleeves and a cuff binding, but here I wanted shirt length sleeves, with real buttoned cuffs and a traditional tower placket. both of which would require me to do some additional drafting and a number of additional steps in construction.

When I tried laying out the pattern pieces, it was obvious that there was not quite enough of the flannel, so I had to find some other fabric to use as an accent. I had a piece of black/grey polkadot quilt cotton which I decided to use for the inner cuffs and inner placket, the yoke lining, the undercollar, and the binding for the collar seam. I am very pleased with how the accent fabric adds a subtle embellishment to the shirt. This was my very first time making a tower placket; I used this excellent tutorial (http://off-the-cuff-shirtmaking.blogspot.com/2014/01/tutorial-shirt-sleeve-placket.html) from Pam Erny, and was delighted at how it turned out. I will definitely make some more cuffed shirts in the future!

This is my flannel shirt, as worn with my black corduroy pinafore and a pair of grey knit loose leggings

What a lovely shirt, the two fabrics go so well together and you are so neat.  The placket is lovely too.  You have certainly got me thinking about using the bias as a front of a shirt - as I too often need extra room in that department.

For my second entry, I just have the hem , buttonholes and buttons to do. I’ll just have this afternoon to do them though  as we’re away for the weekend and I want to wear it on Saturday as I’m meeting some friends that I haven’t seen for over 15 years or so. (Why do I do that? I have other things I could wear!   :S Does anyone else have the same problem? )

@Fabric Lover as I explained previously, you only need to click the blue link that say ‘insert attachment’. I would normally be able to do that, but for some reasons I can’t. The way your entry is posted now, there won’t be pictures visible in the voting thread.
I am sorry, but I don’t have the time to download pictures, rotate them and upload them for the entries.

Below the ‘insert attachment’ link is shown. When you click that, the picture becomes part of your entry post, if you don’t it remains an attachment amd won’t show in the voting thread.

@Fabric Lover, I have rotated one of your images

using Lunapic. (https://www3.lunapic.com/editor/)  It's a bit long winded but as you can see it does work.  The steps are:

1.   upload your image to Lunapic;
2.   to rotate, click on the 'Edit' tab and select 'Rotate image' which is towards the bottom of the list;
3.   in the 'Angle' window, make the degree 90 and then click the green arrow that faces right;
4.   scroll to the bottom of the screen and click 'Imgur';
5.   copy everything in the 'Image URL' window;
6.   use the link to re-post the adjusted image using the little Mona Lisa icon in reply.

The above is a practical demonstration of how it should work.  I selected a vertical image and rotated it to the horizontal.

@UttaRetch, the main issue we try to sort is having the pictures in the actual text of the post, so that they appear in the voting thread. As I said, I am usually able to do that, but there are occasions when I just can’t. When I tried today, it would have deleted the pictures.

Fabric Lover’s 2nd entry.

Pattern used: Simplicity 8830 from Mimi G

Fabric used: Atelier Brunette -I think it’s called Moonstone green.

This is the same pattern as I used for my first entry, but I love the fabric even more than that one. No major problems with it, other than leaving the buttons I bought on Wednesday at the shop! After looking everywhere for them on Thursday morning and assuming I dropped them out of my bag, I rang the shop only to be told I’d left them there!

I was hoping to make use of the leap day and get my shirt finished today so I could enter but the sleeve vents have defeated me. So fiddly! There's definitely not time to get the sleeves set and collar / cuffs done now.

 Toileandtrouble's Entry

Pattern is Simplicity 9816

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Totally the wrong colour in the close up. It is really a deeper dullish red background and the buttons match. From a distance OH says the overall effect is deep orange. That's a surprise.

And I've made it. Sewing on the buttons now.

Fabric is a remnant of unknown composition. Feels soft and warm like silk but tried a burn test, also a close up under a microscope and am no wiser. Doesn't quite match up to anything. Perhaps it's a mixture, but it feels very good to wear.

Had to enlarge the pattern and then do an FBA, also lower the dart a couple of cms.  Decided to make the cuff deeper and put a curve on the edge.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Very difficult to sew. Although it has texture and snags on my rough fingers, it is also very light and floated up and behind where I was sewing.  Putting on the collar meant a lot of un-catching and re-sewing.
We have lost our haberdashery shop, now only have buttons in the cheap department store and charity shops.  I'm not thrilled with the heart shape but the colour is fine. I didn't have enough of the right sort in my stash unfortunately. Might change them when I get something better.

Photos soon. now. My new tablet makes it easier to take and send pictures but still can't get a decent picture of me wearing it.

Starryfish's 2nd Entry

Pattern- Style Arc Marley- no alterations apart from an FBA. This is the third time I have made this patter It is a boxy short shirt with no buttoned cuffs , just wide slits to the hem and cuffs. It is an easy sew.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The fabric is a fine cotton in a thin blue stripe just right for summer.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I often wear one of the previous versions open with a tank top underneath, and probably do the same with this one.

ETA- sorry, no idea why the images are upside down! I think they are clear enough any way.

This isn’t for the contest as I finished it too late but this is practice with photos.

I made the Closet Case Kalle shirt for the second time, this time with short sleeves.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I feel that the sides stick out a bit at the hem and had considered shortening it to just wear tucked in but the sides finish above the waistline. I’ll just make a note for next time I think.   This may be one for the 6PAC contest.
