Vintage Machines / Singer 431g - should I???
« on: February 16, 2024, 13:24:23 PM »
Anyone got one or used one?  They are supposed to be on the best old Singers.  I really want to press that "buy" button but...

In the wardrobe / Possibly a crazy/impossible alteration?
« on: January 18, 2024, 14:03:09 PM »
I have a lovely (expensive) Sea Salt rain coat which I do love - but - now I've seen photos of me in it, I realise how huuuuuge it is!!  Unfortunately I think most of this hugeness is across the chest as I'm not the most blessed in that area (everywhere else makes up for it of course!)

So - how to reduce the bust, with the added complication of I think it has sealed seams too.  Would it be possible without loads of de-construction which may be difficult given the seams?  I need to keep the width of the back just to add to the awkwardness.

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Baby Lock Enlighten overlocker
« on: October 29, 2023, 18:19:12 PM »
My new toy has arrived, and it's lovely.

It has air threading for both loopers and (mechanical) threaders for both needles, although that is a bit fiddly but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

It stitches nicely, and also does a fancy "wave" stitch.  I'll put some pics up of that tomorrow.  My only little gripe is it doesn't have a little bin to catch the seam offcuts.  They do make one, but it sticks out over the edge of your table with a hole in with a bag attached, I reckon my big fat stomach would interfere with that!

Overlockers & Coverstitchers / Overlocker recommendations please
« on: October 28, 2023, 13:37:15 PM »
I've had a look at past threads, but would love some up to date recommendations for a new overlocker - I have just told myself not to be so silly as to even think about a Baby Lock Gloria!!  I already have the Baby Lock coverstitch machine, so really don't need that!

So, what's nice and quiet and smooth and will handle things like fleece fabric as well as thin jersey?

Vintage Machines / Ooops!! But it was a bargain...
« on: September 18, 2023, 10:27:54 AM »
...even if they say it doesn't sew, although the light and motor work.

"It" is a Bernina 700, (the vintage one, not the new 700 embroidery one!).

I reckon if the electrics are ok, then how hard can it be to get it working?  And I got it for £65 instead of the £90 they were asking - including delivery.

Wish me luck, it should arrive by Wednesday.

PS  I blame @Bill with all his talk of his new 201k  :P

I saw this & I thought you may be interested! / 50% off Simplicity
« on: September 08, 2023, 09:24:54 AM »
I expect you all get emails from your favourite suppliers, but just in case you don't, Jaycotts (and no doubt everyone else) have half price Simplicity patterns at the moment.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / FOR SALE sewing machine bags
« on: August 09, 2023, 11:08:26 AM »
I have two sewing machine bags I just don't need - £5 each plus postage.  Or make me an offer...

I should be able to squish each one into a "small parcel" size, so postage would be £3.29 for Royal Mail tracked 48.

The one with blue piping is more padded than the pink one, which only just has padding.

Fun with Fabric / Help with denim please
« on: May 27, 2023, 10:58:02 AM »
I think I'll be making some new shorts this year (darned crotches are so passé) but I is confused by the weights - I just want normal jeans type weight, but not sure what that is.  And it has to be stretch.

Any ideas of where to get some online please?  At a sensible price too!

Vintage Machines / Amazing restoration of an old Singer
« on: May 05, 2023, 11:10:07 AM »
Not mine of course, but this video shows how you can restore a machine that looks waaaay past it!!
I first saw it on Pretty Restoration's face book page where the video is speeded up, but found it to link to on youtube for your delight and delectation - linky.

I so want a workshop with all the necessary tools and equipment!  I love the way they have done laser etching (?) instead of decals, even though that's obviously not authentic.

Edit: - If you don't want to waste half an hour, you can speed up the yt video, click on the settings cogwheel icon thingy and select playback speed - it works well at x2

Vintage Machines / Jones JA35
« on: March 21, 2023, 17:14:35 PM »
I've been fiddling with this old Jones this afternoon, and decided to try the motor off the Singer 185k.

I had to bodge things a bit, as it seems the Jones needs a shorter belt, but it sews beautifully, so new belt is on order.

I think I prefer the fiddling with the machines to actually making anything at the moment.

Vintage Machines / New to me Singer 185k
« on: March 11, 2023, 15:26:36 PM »
I've got it.
The table is interesting, very 60s.  Needs a bit of work on it though.  I love the little drop down storage compartment on the front.
It appears in good condition, in fact looks hardly used.  It doesn't have any accessories/feet with it though and is missing the spool pin, which I didn't realise til we'd got it home.
The machine itself seems to sew well, albeit somewhat noisily!  I've found a manual for it so will oil all the points it says and see how it goes.

Vintage Machines / I'm being tempted...

... by a Singer 185k, in fact I've just messaged the seller.  Ooops  :embarrassed:

A Good Yarn / Chunky cardigan
« on: February 02, 2023, 20:07:52 PM »
Just remembered to take a pic of the cardi I've knitted on my Brother 260 machine for my daughter.  I'm very pleased with how it's turned out, but I think it may be a bit too small.  I'll send it to her anyway to see if it is big enough.  The length turned out ok, but it's a bit narrow, despite making a couple of tension swatches.  Maybe the cables made it narrower, but I didn't thank they'd make much difference.

In the wardrobe / Very odd zip
« on: December 16, 2022, 16:50:40 PM »
My long open ended zip finally turned up today - but it's a bit odd.  The top end, instead of having metal "stops" on each side has what appears to be melted lumps of transparent plastic over the last few teeth, which is also a bit rough in a couple of places.  This also means that the zip doesn't sit flat when fully closed, so it's a bit rubbish.
Fortunately, I need to shorten it by about an inch or so anyway, and have a little kit of metal stops I can put on, so it doesn't actually matter.
Anyone else come across any like this?

Tech Know How / Error loading pic
« on: November 12, 2022, 10:09:02 AM »
@Mr Twingo I've been trying to post a pic, but I keep getting the message - An Error Has Occurred!
Your attachment has failed security checks and cannot be uploaded. Please consult the forum administrator.

It's only a pic of some fabric, honest!  And it's been reduced to 81.7kb so not too big.
