Title: Mask pouches
Post by: Vezelay on December 19, 2020, 15:57:05 PM
Decided to make some mask pouches (and a couple of masks) for us and friends this Christmas? DH product tested a few styles and sizes and liked the smaller zip type best as it's easiest to secure and shove in the pocket. The gold fabric is a single layer, the rest are lined with the outer one interfaced, and the yellow pouch has a Velcro closure.

The pouch of choice takes two pieces of fabric 8 3/4" by 6" - plus 1 3/4" x 2 1/2" for the tab - so great for FQ (or any) remnants. The zips were a dirt cheap Amazon bulk buy ages ago. It takes me 30 minutes to make, including cutting...plus the time it takes me to choose what colours to use!

Ooh! I like those! I've made quite a few masks this year, but no pouches, they tend to just get stuffed in to pockets and handbags or car door pockets. Might just have to make some like that. Thanks for the idea!

Forgot to mention the obvious - they're washable. The way we use them is to store the clean mask in pocket or car, then we put the used mask back in the pouch when it's taken off outside the home, and throw both in the wash back home. It doesn't matter if they shrink a little but I quickly hand wash and iron dry the pieces of fabric first anyway to check the colours don't run. None have yet.

They look great. It would still take me at least half an hour to choose the fabric and zip combos though  0_0

A few more, also posted a couple off without taking a photo. The blue camouflage one is for a left-handler.

@Vezelay they're lovely. My mask pouches were drawstring ones, your zip ones are much neater.

@Lachica a drawstring pouch would work perfectly well too. I just wanted an excuse to use some of my excessive collection of random coloured zips, as well as those odd leftover bits of fabric too small for anything else but too big too throw away as they "might come in handy". I have a lot of those!

I like the ones with the snap-flap. @Vezelay can you tell me how to make those?  :sew:

@Sara-S It's quick and easy. I used this method https://youtu.be/p79mcqNk4po and downsized it to fit just one mask. I cut two pieces for outer and lining 11 3/4" x 5 3/4" and shaped one end. The finished size is 5" x 4 1/4".

The only issue I had with these is that it wasn't easy to close the popper with a mask inside. I find my poppers quite stiff though - yours may be fine, do give it a try.

Thanks for the info & measurements @Vezelay   I have snaps & a snap press, plus loads of fat quarters to use!

I made a couple today, from 2 fat quarters. I added one touch the instructions didn’t mention. I sewed a blanket stitch along the sides that were folded over. It reined in the layers of fabric a bit.

Thank you @Vezelay for the idea, I have made my first pouch!

I made a couple of new masks yesterday as some of ours are really starting to look a bit worse for wear, so today I made a pouch. Took me just a bit longer than the 30 minutes you took though! A fair bit of head scratching involved in working out how to put in the zip. Got there though, thank you!

I must be doing something wrong - We're still using the masks we had in Bali back in March. Are we supposed to change them ?

I saw the title of this thread and thought of masks with built in cheek pouches so people can haul around snacks in the manner of a chipmunk or kangaroo rat.

Depends how often you need to wear them @Catllar i suppose.
I’m just making another couple each.  But as we don't go anywhere we don’t wear them.  I keep thinking they might make them compulsory outside the house.  But no, that would involve issuing orders rather than relying on the 'common sense of the British public'.

I've been wearing the ones I made back in March. I know we're not supposed to re-use disposable ones (but I know some people who are using the same disposable mask they bought months ago,  :x but I've not read anything about replacing simple fabric ones.  I just wash them in boiling water after each days' wear.  They still look fine, but I've not really had need to wear them much.

Although now I'm wearing them to walk around the block I suppose they may get tatty more quickly.

I have about 4 interchangeable fabric ones but I certainly don't wash them each time they're worn. They are stuffed in my pocket and I leave one in the car for emergency operations should I ever be called upon  to intervene!

I haven't found a method of preventing classes from steaming over whilst wearing masks - anyone got a solution to that one?

I wish!  The metal strips help a tiny bit, and having a mask that is quite large seems to improve things a bit, but if there is any other magic way of stopping glasses from steaming up I haven't found it.

As masks are used to protect other people, they are only really likely to have covid-19 germs on them if you are breathing them out - in which case you already have it.  It's a good reason not to handle someone else's mask, though - unless you live closely with them, of course, in which case you're likely to pick up any infection by other means anyway.

However, you are breathing out into your mask all the time, and it is getting damp, which germs like very much, so any bacteria or viruses that you are producing will be having a field day.  Therefore washing them with detergent at a temperature that will kill stuff (largely bacteria, but viruses too) is a good idea.  It will stop them from being smelly too  :x .  Hanging them somewhere to air for a couple of days before re-using them should also get rid of anything nasty, because once they are dry germs (including covid) will just die.

It's been confirmed that masks can protect the wearer from large droplet spread too, which means the outside could potentially harbour virus particles. After use mine goes in a pouch or plastic ziploc bag and might be worn again on the same outing eg dentist/petrol station. Once home it goes in the washing machine to wait for the next wash load - pouch too, or the ziploc sits there a few days.

I realise that's more cautious than most people but it's what's been advised by medical science from the start of this pandemic. I made us 5 each, two for each car and a spare. They don't get much use as we live in a rural area and get home deliveries, but it's good to have them. I made six for a practice nurse friend back in April and she asked for more - she hated the surgical masks they were supplied with and wanted something that wouldn't scare the children she was vaccinating. She gets through two a day and they definitely get washed after each use!

Yes - if someone has coughed or sneezed on you you definitely need to wash it (and yourself) very thoroughly!

I made us around 6 each back in February, then some Christmas ones. With the family's probably  30 in total. They're now getting tatty. They get washed after each wearing although mine have irritated my face so now I wash them by hand in hand wash gel with very hot water instead of in the machine. I've just ordered a mask panel for £19. There are 20 lovely designs on it, zebra print, chamaeleon, snake, peacock, flamingo etc etc. Tomorrow's job  ><

My friend's daughter say it drives her mad seeing people removing masks, shoving them away and then putting them on again.  Once they’re on and worn you should assume the outside is contaminated.  The inside of your pocket or whatever is then contaminated.  If you touch it your hands are then contaminated.  You fiddle with it round your face.....don’t even want to think about that!   She advised putting it on and leaving it on.  Taking it off should only involve touching the elastic or ties.  If you need to take it off when out, take more than one and use a clean one each time you mask up.  She works for the NHS.

This is the mask I find best for stopping my glasses from steaming up.  My glasses sit just over the nose bar and it is a good fit.

Not pouch related, but since this is nearly a mask thread : these are the designs on the mask panel.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373235444266
Printed in pairs as they are intended to go together to make a reversible mask. Since my masks are lined with silk, and these ones will have filter pockets, I shall use each design as an outer. I can't attach photos, even putting them through Snapseed I'm getting a 'fatal error' message. Which seems a bit over the top
for PPE  ><

That was easy!   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]   No nose wire, so I'll see how I get on with it before making any more.

They look good with the patterns.  I does not look such a tight fit at the moment.  Is it loose under the chin and near the ears?  The one I pictured is a very good fit, in fact it moves in and out when I breathe but not so much that it sticks to me.

I put the nose bar on the top, it has a sticky side that adheres permanently when a hot iron is used to apply it.  :)

@Lilian it's not tight on the nose. I will probably add a nose wire, I bought 100 of them last Spring. They are self adhesive but I've been stitching them into the s/a with a zig zag stitch.  Under the chin & next to ears it's snug. My original masks were tight but they rubbed my cheeks & exacerbated what was probably mild rosacea but is now very sore & I have an anti-mite cream prescribed

@Lilian  thanks for mentioning ironing the nose wires on. I just stuck mine down manually and they wash off in the washer, but have stuck back four times already.  I will try ironing one.

For glasses fogging problems....
Have you tried a tissue folded up and put at the top of the nose area?   DH thought it worked well.  It’s all a bit of a faff isn’t it whatever you have to do.

The instructions I used said to very hot iron also on the other side of the fabric where the adhesive is.  Mine have stayed put even through washing.  It started to peel very slightly at the ends but when I tried to pull it off it ripped the fabric!  Probably my fault if I didn't iron the ends enough.  I only hand wash mine and then a very hot dry iron to kill any remaining germs.

@Lachica that's a problem for you. Is there any other lining fabric you could try that is softer on your skin?

@Lilian I use silk. Thanks for the hint @toileandtrouble ironing them on would save s lot of faff.
