The Haberdashery / What's this?

I think it might be a tracing wheel? Found in my mum's sewing box but I don't remember seeing it before. I also found this  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  which looks more robust than my rotary cutter.

For Sale, Wanted & Free to a good home / Pfaff 1229
« on: June 06, 2019, 10:46:54 AM »
For sale - bought to stitch thick pvc panels into a thick canvas boat cover because I didn't want to risk my Pfaff Creative. I liked it so kept it to take to sewing club etc - except I don't. It's time for it to work for someone else. It has all the original feet, works well but I have no idea how much to ask. Can anyone suggest a sensible price please?   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I hope some techy people might advise. I have lots of designs bought from Urban Threads. I've always lifted them onto USB stick from hubby's laptop. Said laptop now dead, so can't use them any more.  I have an iPad and an Android phone. I do have an On-The-Go cable (somewhere) for the phone so in theory could buy designs, download via phone...  But the phone screen is small, difficult to see designs. I've now seen a wireless memory stick advertised. Anyone used one? With iPad? (The other problem might be that smallest size is 16Gb and my Pfaff doesn't work with big memory sticks. It has a 2Gb supplied.)

Sewing Machines / The power of Pfaff

I just sewed through my hump jumper! I know it's a powerful machine, but I was amazed.

Patterns Discussion / Help! Style arc Ziggi PDF pattern
« on: January 08, 2019, 17:01:33 PM »
The first 7 pages (out of 59) have printed with all 4 margins & joined together perfectly. From page 8 onwards the left margin is missing and the triangle matching mark is tiny. The pattern pieces appear to have lost a bit off the sides. Obviously I don't want to carry on sellotaping the pieces if, as I suspect, the pieces will be too small. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so how do I correct it? It gets good reviews so I think it must be a mistake I've made somehow. First photo shows pages 1-4, perfect. 2nd & 3rd photos show the problem.

Technical Help / Help! Need a double ended Parka zip
« on: December 16, 2018, 08:59:16 AM »
I'm freezing! The zip pull has come off, I need to buy a replacement zip pronto. Local b&M shops don't have any. It's double ended, so can be unzipped from bottom. Can anyone suggest a supplier please? I've searched eBay, found the perfect one in the US but they don't ship to U.K.

Anyone interested? There's also a photocopied pattern book. I think it would go as large letter.

Tech Know How / Trouble uploading photos
« on: November 10, 2018, 22:20:27 PM »
It may be my phone causing this as it was ok before the last Android update :'(. This is the error message I'm getting:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 94371840 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 13824 bytes) in /home/k6vkgu51x5q3/additional_domains/thesewingplace.org.uk/public_html/Sources/Subs-Graphics.php on line 412

Does this mean my phone is suddenly taking pictures at a file size too large for TSP? Or does it refer to memory available on my phone? I've deleted loads of stuff but still get same message. It allowed me to upload an image for  one post. But not 2 images in same post.

Dolls and Toys / The Dolls' Wardrobe
« on: October 23, 2018, 22:09:15 PM »
When clearing out my dad's spare bedroom (so that a carer can stay if necessary), I found my mum's stash. Part of it was a bagful of fabric scraps, some of which I recognise as leftovers from making maternity dresses (35years ago) and baby/toddler dresses and some from dolls clothes made for my daughter's in the late 1980s. There was also the pattern she'd used, presumably for  my dolls clothes (late 1950s) no idea how old but it cost 1shilling. Anyway, I've traced the patterns & modified them so I now have leggings & T shirt patterns and have cut out a wardrobe for my granddaughter's new doll, which I'll be giving her very soon, before her baby brother arrives. It will be a boy doll wearing 'jeans', T-Shirt and denim jacket. I've also cut out a dress, leggings and a red t-shirt with a foiled heart (good use of new foiling kit) which will dress the doll at our house. And shoes!! Spent a happy hour working out a pattern for these.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Tonertex foil & glitter
« on: October 14, 2018, 10:04:08 AM »
I bought a kit at the ally pally show, just cos it looks fun. I've now played with both foil & glitter, on fabric and card. IF it's washable I can see another party dress for DGD coming up.

In the wardrobe / Urgent - help needed
« on: July 04, 2018, 17:57:00 PM »
I've made a jacket for 17 month old GD. I need help choosing buttons. The pics show the ones I have, either brass look (but look vaguely skull like without my glasses) or blue hearts for the front and red hearts on the sleeves cos I only have 5 blue and 2 red. I could brave town tomorrow to get 7 matching, but it's so hot and I'd have teething 7 month old GS in his buggy...I have a huge stash of buttons but these are the only candidates.
Edit: sorry about upside down pix, but can't see how to rotate them. They should rotate if you click on them.

Embroidery and Embellishment / Lining up embroidery designs
« on: June 17, 2018, 21:04:31 PM »
My Pfaff makes a corner mark to enable accurate registration when embroidering repeat designs. Allegedly. However carefully I follow the instructions for setting locking points etc, the designs don't quite meet up. Any ideas? I spent all of yesterday embroidering the skirt for this toddler dress for my granddaughter's friend. There are 3 and a bit pattern repeats and a small step in the design each time. It's not visible when worn (pic of GD) but I'd like to master the technique.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Vintage Machines / Bernini 707 minimatic
« on: April 11, 2018, 12:01:40 PM »
I've just bought one of these. It's very portable, much lighter than my big Pfaff, so I plan to use it at sewing club where I can't lug my big Pfaff upstairs. The Bernina seems in good condition, I've cleaned & oiled it, there's no rust and very little wear, though the smaller belt will be replaced as it has a set in it where it's been in one position for a long while. It makes lovely neat stitches, all of them (the cam stack is in good condition). I've brought it on holiday to have a play! The shell satin edging stitch works very nicely, I'm thinking it would be good for a toddler's dress, using embroidery thread.

I notice that a shank adaptor is available to enable use of modern snap-on feet. Anyone got one? Does it work?

I bought this for £13.95 (ouch) because I had a credit note to use & it seemed a good idea. There are 3 YouTube vids, which are pretty rubbish, (out of focus, not showing the crucial bits etc).It has a double slot on the left which is supposed to fold the main fabric, but my seams won't feed through it. On the third YouTube video the demonstrator says to fold & press the fabric first. If I was going to do that I'd use the standard foot! What am I missing here? Or shall I take it back?
