Blimey! You must fabric shop like it’s supermarket sweep! That an impressive haul for 30 mins and very reasonable.

It takes me ages to select a fabric and pay for it!

Crikey Vege I hope you had help to carry all that.

Am slightly worried that you say its tidier, hope they're not going upmarket.

You must be very decisive, what a great haul. I'm glad that Immanuel's is still going now that we don't hear about it. I'm still promising myself a visit.

I think with a time limit you are more decisive .. and Immanuels is a long way from Suffolk I had a list when I went in.. look at wool knits if I found something I liked I would buy some fleece that matched.. thinking new cowl and possible hat :ninja: I where these when I walk so want another to wash and wear.. liked the knit enough to make a top.. which I would never wear with the hat and cowl in case the fashion police spotted me  :S there was a box of the Rose  and Hubble samples so I dived in ...linen look spots I just liked.. the orange and green florals are for dresses for my great niece Ruby ( ruby's doll is my avatar so will have to have a matching dress) bikes ?  Upholstery fabrics Mum has a stool she needs covering and at a £1 a metre it would be rude not too Tartan fleece will make a useful rug for the car I think.. should I have bought more possibly although having to put the sewing on hold for a bit puts a damper on things

I have a friend who needs to purchase fabric for curtains and we have decided it would be a great excuse for us both to have a day out up Burnley way at some point in the nearish future and pop into Immanuel's while we are there.
 :fabric:
So my questions are, since I cannot find much info online - does anyone know for certain what their opening days and hours are?
And what is the parking situation like? Thank you.

9 to 5 Monday to Saturday... on Street Parking .. it is a small side street you might not be able to park directly outside I don't think they take credit cards .. I have always paid by cash or cheque but give them a ring they are very helpful 07437 818534
I would have a look at prestigious fabrics and Porter and stone online  because they stock a lot of those but they may not have the one you want ... be prepared to search through a lot of rolls of fabric the chaps are happy to haul out the rolls they are heavy.... they had some nice reasonably price wool curtaining as well there is the £1 a metre room and a £2 a metre room

If you're interested in curtain fabric, Fine Fabrics at Oakmount Mill on Wiseman St, Burnley has lots of beautiful fabrics, not as cheap as chips, but at a good reduction. Upstairs is full of dressmaking fabric and there's a teashop on site too. It's about 3 mins by car from Immanuel's and has off street parking. There's a sale on at present too  ;)

Kad - Thank You!  :)

It's a good while since I have been to that part of the world and I am really looking forward to this trip.

In the late 90s my daughter and me used to trundle up that way fairly regularly as we had family who lived up there at the time.

One place that stands out in my memory as being fabulous to visit was a large aquarium/fish pet-shop type place, and for years I have tried to remember exactly where it is. I have looked online but can find nothing that seems to be the place that we visited then. Unfortunately I have no idea what the name of it was called, or even if it is still going. What was stunning was that they had aquaria which I assume they had built into the place themselves that were quite narrow widthwise but were as tall as the ceiling.

I'd love to go back and pay the place a visit. I seem to remember it was away from built-up towny places, and possibly near a by pass.

There was also some kind of mill retail place nearby that stocked Dr Martin seconds as well as tons of other shoes and boots at great prices. That was great to visit too. Docs were quite fashionable at the time and I remember us buying a few pairs from there because the prices were so good.

I think that you may mean 'Winfields' in Haslingden. It did start by selling shoes/boots but is now more of an 'Outdoor ' shop - walking boots/ wet weather clothing etc. BUT still sells shoes and has a website too  ;)

Yes that sounds about right. I daresay now the Dr Martins production has been (-very regretfully imo) shipped out to East Asia then there are no seconds in this country any more to flog off cheap.

I used to wear Docs a lot years ago as I have broad feet with a high instep and a wide heel and they were one of the few shoe brands that I could cram my feet into that would eventually stretch enough for me to be comfortable in. They must have changed the last proportions with the production move as these days they won't go anywhere near me. I feel like one of the original ugly sisters in Cinderella where my feet are concerned, I have a dreadful time finding shoes that even come close to fitting these days. Apart from flip flops and wellies, lol.
  :(

(...... rant over  ;))

. . . fabric for curtains and we have decided it would be a great excuse for us both to have a day out up Burnley
Also, if you are travelling any distance -
Morning - go to Immanuels, Bright St, Burnley
Lunch - at the Cafe at Fine Fabrics, Oakmount Mill, Wiseman St. Burnley, it's on the way back to the motorway
After lunch, take a look around Fine Fabrics - upstairs for dressmaking & habby then downstairs for admiring curtain fabric.  (dressmaking fabric is not as cheap as Immanuels but not as dear as Minerva)
And,
if you're still not all fabriced out, nip along the M65 to the next junction and pop in at Minerva's, Atlas Rd, Darwen
Most of Minerva's stock is in the warehouse.  If you look on line and see something you like the look of, then write down the number and when you're in the store ask to see it and they bring it out to you.

Enjoy the day when you go.

Ahem Doc Martens are still fashionable says she sporting a pair of flowery DM Mary Janes.  :D I find the fit is generally ok on me but I have very wide feet.

S&B is just off the M6 at J34 so is much faster than you'd think to get to from..... oh almost anywhere.

If you are thinking of Minerva check to see if the physical shop is still open. I thought they were just online now. ???

Also how far is Burnley from Dewsbury (Fabworks - great shop IMHO)?

Ahem Doc Martens are still fashionable says she sporting a pair of flowery DM Mary Janes.  :D

Perhaps I'm just bitter  :'(
I'd still wear them now fashionable or not but I can't get my silly feet into them. I must be a hobbit from the calf down, (but thankfully without all the foot hair).
It's my heels I have most problem with, the back of the heel section of Mary Jane styles dig in. I have achilles tendinopathy from stubbornly expecting some wide fit Clarks sandals to stretch around my achilles area. They didn't, and I've been hobbling around because of my bloody mindedness for the better part of two years now as a result. I found out the hard way that Achilles tendons take a loooong time to heal.
I just have funny feet. Sob.

AA routeplanner says the distance is 31 miles or an hour and 17 minutes.

Fear not, my enabling friends, wherever we visit, I shall take my camera

(Edit - I meant the boot styles were fashionable then, which is what we bought; my daughter wouldn't so much as look at them now, but I'd love some  <3)

Madame C. I feel your pain. I suffered from very similar achilles tendon problems. My tendonitis was caused by over enthusiastic Scottish country dancing. I did get medical advice, stopped dancing for a while  ( :(  ) and now only dance in proper shoes (pumps with thin soles were a disaster) and my achilles tendons recovered within 6 months. It felt slow at the time but it did get better.

You are quite right any shoes which rubbed the heels were very painful and were a no-no. Two years is a long time to put up with this.  I'd be hopeful that your tendons will heal and you can get back to your DMs.  :D

My tendonitis was caused by over enthusiastic Scottish country dancing.

Oh dear!
I've seen a couple of podiatrists over this, and have been doing the exercises as prescribed, although at one point I was doing the tendon stretching somewhat over-enthusiastically and managed to give myself a stress fracture in one of the foot bones. *
 :|.
And the orthotics I was originally prescribed left not quite enough room in my shoes for my feet, so my blister count went through the roof. But by then I had learned the stern lesson that Foot Pain Must Not Be Ignored, and have since worn more appropriate orthotics.
I was used to walking several miles a day with the dogs and for a while I just carried on as best I could, with shorter and shorter distances, even though the pain was intense, and I would have to take umpteen stops every walk, and then tiptoe home slowly, because the pain was so bad. I just carried on regardless, because I am stupid like that, until a dear friend said 'Enough!' and dragged me to see a podiatrist for an assessment.
The fact it's dragged on so long is probably my own fault. I have no comprehension of the words 'rest, and take things easy'. Looking back because my ridiculous feet are on the far end of some distribution curve, I just got used to putting up with the pain caused by breaking in 'new shoes'.
Yes I've learned my lesson now!  :fish: :fish: :fish:

I'm so glad you are now back to dancing, and that your tendons are well again  :)

*aggravated by tripping over a headphones cable because I was not looking where I was going, whilst running in flip flops.  :fish:

Well you've done all the right things. I completely agree that foot pain must not be ignored. I too carried on and it made things worse. I had orthotics made on the NHS but they were far too big and clunky to wear in any shoes I had so I got some orthotics from Salford Uni podiatry clinics which were much more wearable. I must admit I don't religiously wear them all the time now several years down the line ( but I do wear them in my dancing shoes).

We are made to be active so we certainly don't want to put our feet up so I think you have entirely the right attitude. In terms of good shoes I've learned a new respect for Hotters - detachable insoles and good soles. Also have you tried Alegria shoes  (Cheerful Soles is one of the only UK suppliers)? They are a chunky style and therefore not everyone's cup of tea, and they are rather expensive, but they are supremely comfortable and have great detachable insoles.... and funky styles
I hope you make a good recovery from this, Madame C. Your posive attitude will surely help. Let's hope our Achilles tendons won't be our Achilles heels and that they will instead be Achilles heals!   :D

Ditto ditto. I tried the NHS ones but they were too much for the expensive shoes, which were the only ones to fit me.  The shoes started to split at the stitching so I gave up too. I didn't realise you could get neater ones.  Must ask around about that, because my feet sometimes refuse to go on.  Some days I can walk for miles and some days -not. (Not good for the knees and hips  either.)

Joining in the foot conversation - I have had to wear NHS customised orthotics for some years. I can no longer wear high street shoes, because the orthotics plus my feet don't fit in them - but the answer is different shoes, not discarding the orthotics, It was very tough to have to part with all my existing shoes - very hard, but it had to be done.
I was directed to Hotters, DB wider fitshoes, and Padders.

Take care of your feet!

@LeilaMay I think you probably got something more sophisticated than the ones I had - mine  were very crudely made and wouldn't fit anything - not even Hotters and the like. The Salford Uni podiatrists were a bit horrified when they saw what I had been given and fitted me with something that worked much better! But I agree that one must get the right thing for one's condition and I believe that it is possible to get good custom made orthotics - even if such things are expensive they would definitely be worth it.

My friend and I went on a mad dash to Burnley this afternoon!  0_0 :fabric:
Work and other commitments meant that we would have had either to make a mad dash this afternoon, or visit in a fortnight's time, which was just too long to wait, so we decided on just a brief visit today.

Immanuels was all we expected, a bit like Abakhan's on steroids, raised to a higher power, and then with a bit more added on.
I have never seen so much fabric stashed in one building. There are rolls stacked up to the ceiling, the amount of stock they have is just unbelievable.
I have taken some pics but not as many as I would have liked as you would need a wide angle lens to do the place justice, plus there were lots of customers present who of course I would not want to photograph (...as that kind of thing is just plain rude and I get sniffy about it when people do it to me...), so the pics I have are limited. I'll post them when I have more time and am properly awake.

There are so many fabric rolls stacked up against the walls in there that when I was in the £2 a metre upholstery room, a load of rolls tumbled over and blocked my way out, and staff had to come and rescue me. I was not concerned as I had just discovered the curtain fabric with the huge bold flowers which I decided would be great for some new bedroom curtains for me  :snip: :loveit:

The fabric below that is my friend's curtain fabric, from Prestigious Textiles, which was £2.99 per metre from Oakmount Mill. Oakmount Mill is amazing too, with oodles and oodles of craft cottons, a fantastic range of stock, with 'bargain corners' dotted around. We went there for some lunch in the attached cafe and the food was excellent and the loos were spotless  :)
I would definitely recommend the cafe. And the loos.

So we had a good look round Oakmount Mill first, then had our late lunch in the cafe, and after that we went to Immanuels where I found my curtain fabric.

So we came home with quite a small haul, but a fabulous one. I'm really looking forward to going back in the near future.
I'd like to get some ideas sorted out and then go and buy what I know I need. Otherwise the prices are so cheap and the quality and range so wonderful that I fear that impulse buying could spiral totally out of control and I could end up drowning in masses of fabric that I don't know what to do with.

Immanuels don't take cards but there is a cashpoint outside a shop on the corner of the main road and where you turn into Bright Street; Immanuels is located at 1 Bright Street, Burnley, BB10 1RR, and the cashpoint is only yards away.

@UttaRetch 2 hours from Euston to Preston then 55 minutes from Preston to Burnley. Sounds ideal for a little fabric holiday.

Actually the London to Preston bit is really fast. It's the Preston to Burnley bit, no doubt on an old chuggy, Northern Rail train, that slows it down!

Tammy don't forget Utta would have factor in the cost of a taxi or at least a small pack horse to get her purchases home.

I'm not allowing myself to go over the hills until I have done some serious stash reduction.

Glad to hear the £2 a metre room is an addition to the £1 a metre room, at first I thought prices had gone through the roof.

Oh yes you get it.
At both Immanuels and Fine Fabrics, it's very easy to get really giddy and once you're home with a couple of bin bags full of fabric you start wondering what to make with it and of course have to find storage for it . . .

Once you have an idea of what's there, it reallyhelps to know which projects you're shopping for before you go.  Also, there will be impulse buys so it does help to try to decide what the impulse buy will become before you actually have to pay for it.

. . . you know why I know this don't you.

Yes it's not really within walking distance of Burnley centre; it requires a bus ride. I've done the journey once by train and bus and it is a bit of a hike. If you remember Esseesee on the old sewing forum, she used to go on the Witch Way bus which starts in the centre of Manchester (it's Pendle witch country). Still a bit of a trek but at least you get to travel on a bus with a giant witch painted on its side!  :D

Here are the photos from Immanuels. I managed to snap pics of only a fraction of the stuff they carry, but it should give you all some idea of the nature of the place. They carry full price fabrics as well as jaw droppingly cheap stuff. It is like a rabbit warren in there, there is so much stock you have to pick your way very carefully around what are essentially little passageways inbetween the stock tubs and shelving.

Below is fleece; I can't remember the price, I suspect it was £5 pm. Next time I go I'll take a notepad and pen...

The next 6 pics are of the £2 pm tubs of polycottons; I snapped umpteen pics in this aisle as it was people-free at the time.

There is lots of stuff I didn't photograph and wish I had, like their vast collection of vinyl and leatherette at £5 pm which occupies a narrow kind of 'porch' type zone that stretches the width of the building in between the front door and the door to the rest of the shop. I was really excited to see so much vinyl at such a great price... I used to do a lot of vinyl sewing making bike seat covers and I was almost disappointed that I don't actually need any vinyl right now.
I'll try and take more pics next time I visit.

Now on to Fine Fabrics at Oakmount Mill, where it is airy, bright, organised, and not even a little bit claustrophobic.
They have a great range of wonderful fabrics and also a good range of notions.
Plus they have that splendid cafe.
Again I'll take more pics next time I visit, but for now, here is a selection of their craft cottons to drool over:

I was impressed by the wooden rules on the wall of their cafe. I am ashamed to say that I coveted the longest one and wished I could take it home:

:loveit: :o

Not a place for the indecisive, I think!  I asked Mr Acorn if he fancied a holiday in Burnley... he said he wouldn't mind one that went close enough to Burnley to be able to visit...  :ninja:

There is a Premier Inn in Burnley. It is 4 miles from Immanuels, and the rooms are around £35 per night (the cheapest non-cancelling option, otherwise they are around £50) for a twin/double room. I have stayed in too many Premier Inns to list over the years and although they are not everyone's cup of tea, for overnight stays in central locations they are excellent, and I can heartily recommend their breakfasts...

Yes. Shameless enabling. Guilty as charged.

It took us an hour and 25 minutes to get there. It took us longer to get back as it was rush hour by then.
The route we took was from Birkenhead through the Birkenhead tunnel and then up Scottie Road way and then on to the M58 past Skem, then onto the M6, and then on the M65 to Burnley - 55 miles.
It was quite a pleasant drive apart from Switch Island which can be nerve-racking  :S

Edit - I just checked the AA website and if you go on the M53 - M56 - M6 - M65 to Burnley instead and avoid the tunnel tolls and Liverpool - and Switch Island - the journey time is about the same but is 78 miles, so an extra 23 miles each way.

Going Friday and staying at the Premier Inn, it’s only 2hrs away so could do it in a day but making a mini break of it.

Depending on the range of things you may like to do, there are plenty of places to visit or things to do to fill a 3 or 4 day trip away exploring the area around Burnley and East Lancs in general as well as visiting the different fabric outlets, including venturing over into Yorkshire if there's time, energy and any fabric money left.

Towneley Hall Art Gallery & Museum and Towneley Park
Gawthorpe Hall (including a textiles collection)
The Singing Ringing Tree (pick a fair weather day)
The Wayside Arts Trail
Canal Cruises
Ightenhill Park, Scott Park, Queens Park
Pendle Hill and Pendle Heritage Centre
Haworth Art Gallery (+Tiffany Art glass)
Weavers Triangle Visitors Centre, (Burnley Wharf)
Mining Museum
Wycoller Hall

And then it's only a short trip across to Fabworks at Dewsbury and that's a whole other trip.

Had to smile to myself whilst reading all about your route planning. It took me 4 weeks last summer to get there. We did go by boat though, straight up the Leeds Liverpool canal. And the Shuttle at Shipley is only a stones throw from the canal as well.
