This seems a doable one for January! Well thought out. I have a few small projects I want to do so I'm in for this.  :thumb:

I have some awful black cotton fabric that was intended for a quilt back but too coarse for that so I was planning to make some shoe bags out of it as it's too large of a piece to toss.  Not very exciting but useful and pretty small.

Ok, I'm in. I REALLY need that apron.

My sewjo has been "sew gone" for "sew long"....maybe this will bring it back.

I also need a knitting needle case
I just made a knitting needle case!! On December 31st!!
Actually it's not a knitting needle case as much as a current project roll. It has pockets to hold my tape measure, stitch markers, spare dpns, crotchet hook, scissors etc. It was useful last night when I was trying to finish off a sock as I knew where everything was. It was made with spare bits of fabric as I was using it as a prototype.
I do need a new oven glove, and apron and have been thinking of replacing my teacosy.......  ;)

That's why I made it, @Flobear !! I could never find my crotchet hook when I dropped a stitch, or my darning needle when it came to the toe finishing kitchener or the stitch markers when I needed them etc. They were always jumbled up at the bottom of a bag with odd bits of wool and so on, now they all have their own little section -cue the smug face emoji!!

@realale  That's why I am planning one too.  (Also one for the 'extra' needles that don't fit into the proper zip case.  I keep them because you often need a spare needle of the working size when you leave sleeves etc while you work on another part of the knitting.)

So glad that you like the little Tuffet Sewingsue - enjoy making this up it is rather sweet.  Perhaps one day I will get one for myself, although I have various pin cushions I mainly use  the Clover wrist pin cushion - that is an excellent one and sometimes when I am working on my dress stand, I have this Clover one on its bracelet and snap it closed and it sits on the wooden top of the stand.  The one I gave my sister she made up once she got home and when she arrived home there was a new sewing machine waiting for her to collect - so the first item she sewed on this new machine was the tuffet.

@Renegade Sewist You just made me realize that though I RARELY leave the table without evidence of my meal on my shirt, it is even rarer for me to soil my shirt while eating on the sofa. I guess it's just paranoia from not wanting to get anything on the sofa - and several decades of having my tv as my main dining companion.

@Esme866  lucky you! I tend to eat soups, stews, chili or these incredible street tacos from a little hole in the wall place. All drippy potentially sloppy foods. Inherently sloppy. It's a curse.

Maybe I'll need to follow my suggestion and make a bit. Oh. Wait. Perhaps that's why I often wear a chefs apron while I dine. Maybe a new non stained apron?   :thumb:

I have been pondering a tea cosy for over a year.  I don't drink tea at all but did buy a tea pot to  make a root ginger drink  I consume regularly.  This would appear to be the nudge I need to get on with it.  Unicorn tea cosy anyone?

Ok I have cut out the oven gloves but can someone remind me why I thought this was a good idea.  Firstly 4 layers of outside fabric, four layers of lining, 4 layers of insulbright all cut ….

Then I discovered I needed  I need cotton wadding, can I find it no eventually found some thickish cotton flannel do you think this will be ok?  I have given up for this afternoon as I am worn out running round the house  and climbing into top cupboards to try to find what i need, I really don’t want to buy wadding just to do these oven gloves, the only other thing I have is cotton interlining.

@Celia Are you sure you need cotton wadding? I looked at some Youtube videos on how to make oven gloves and they all used just the Insul Bright, no wadding was mentioned.

cotton interlining would do @Celia its all just for added bulk but the important thing is the insulbrite ... Do you have some? I have loads if you need ... just let me know

Thank you, I thought the same @Diane and @Lowena but it is on the packaging for the insobriety, I think I will just use the brushed cotton I have.  Thank you @Iminei but I do have enough to do them.   Spell checker has changed the name of the silvery stuff and won’t let me put it right sorry.

I'm going to join the challenge and make a case for my new Knitpro interchangeable knitting needles.

I bought just the sizes I'll use, rather than splashing out on a full kit, so don't have a case to keep them tidy. I've found a tutorial on YouTube to follow  :D The colours may end up a bit random as I'll just use up scraps I have left over. It will be small, useful and frugal!

This is a bag/pouch for my granddaughter's birthday on Friday. I foolishly made it out of the fur fabric I used to recover her teddy bear. Not a good idea for ITH embroidery as the foot kept getting tangled in the fur.  :headbang: And the brown zip for the back turned out to be maroon  so it's got a beige one.  Once I've forgotten the angst of making it I will be pleased with it!!  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

DD's best friend has asked if I could make a " small, interesting " frame purse for her to use at her wedding in March. I'm very fond of this young lady so I've promised to do my best, the only thing is she has a degree in textiles with particular emphasis on embellished fabrics so  it looks like a challenge. Always presuming my efforts pass her high standards I'll enter it into the competition

Another present for my granddaughter. A pencil roll. I was going to make her a pencil case but my artist friend told me how much more useful pencil rolls are. Cue YouTube research  :P. I just made this one up as I went along. I did have grandiose ideas of adding a zipped pocket with vinyl but in the end decided a simple one was the way to go. I used two interfaced fat quarters but decided against adding wadding as I thought that would make it too thick.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

My small but useful make is a case for my new Knitpro interchangeable knitting needles and cables. I followed the YouTube tutorial by Erica Arndt. Cutting out the pieces was the most complicated bit. Sewing it up was fairly straightforward.

I've used fabric scraps I had sitting around so the 'lightbulb' fabric doesn't really match but I hope it will spark some inspiration in my knitting! There is a zip pocket on the outside which will be useful for keeping bits and bobs to hand.

Well, you know when you are too tired to sew but you push on anyway and keep making basic errors? That's me today. I made a slip cover for my tablet and mucked up the measurements - error one. ( In my defence I was trying to eke it out of 'only just enough' fabric).
Error two was try to put the lining in wrong side to right side. And I was so tired I then couldn't work out how to put the lining in, something I have done countless times.
Error three was to sew the seams the wrong size
Error four was to doggedly continue when I should have stopped.
Error five was to leave an insufficient opening to turn through.
Error six is to still put it on here in all its codged together glory.
Sigh.
The only thing I like is the embroidery.

@realale no one will notice the errors with such a perfectly worded bit of embroidery  :thumb:
Love it  <3
Meanwhile, I looked through the stash and ended up with a quandary. Do I stick with unicorn which would require some sort of stitchery on black satin.
Or, use the fabric I just found which is cute kitties  :meow:, not unicorn but better suited fabric!

Well i've been sewing pretty much all day  :) I cut out the smaller bits for my oven gloves and then realised that the white bias binding that i had in the cupboard wasn't suitable  :S it was stiff and almost transparent, i didn't like it. After buying lovely fabric i didn't want to ruin it so i took myself off to Hobbycraft and picked up some lovely grey binding which picked up the grey in the fabric (i took a sample with me), along with matching thread.
When it came to the quilting, i took @Iminei advice and put on the walking foot (never used one before), put a new needle in and set the machine to the slowest speed, took my time and hey presto, i done some lovely sewing even if i do say so myself. I've got as far as attaching the binding around the outer edge and i've started to finish it off by hand as there's no way i can match up both sides of the binding in one go. Will finish it off tomorrow due to lack of light.

Double oven gloves made using some lovely cotton, ultra bright wadding and finished off by hand with a grey bias binding to complement the grey in the fern’s. Was easy to make and didn’t come across any issues. I used a walking foot and set the machine to its slowest speed and got a much better finish. Slow and steady for me from now on.

Ann Entry #1

This year the goal is to use less paper when wrapping gifts. I plan on making reusable gift bags that people can reuse the following year. The goal is to use up fabric from the stash that are orphans. I may have to buy some fabric to go with them.

This is a basic lined bag using quilting cotton. I put a buttonhole in to thread the ribbon through. This bag is large enough to hold two small tubs for cookies, 4 mug rugs, packages of hot chocolate, and chocolate spoons. I had no issues sewing the bag. I interfaced both the outer fabric and lining with a light fusible knit interfacing so the bag can be folded easily for storage.

The tutorial  (https://everythingsewing.blogspot.com/2011/12/fabric-gift-bag.html)is one I wrote years ago when I made my first bags.

Can I use an item that I made for a competition on another site, if not I'll start stitching on something else.

Here’s my new tea cosy. Made to fit my teapot. A bird design on one side ( the front really ) , with a sunburst type design on the other. I used a layer of Insulbright and a layer of normal wadding to keep my tea nice and cosy  :D Dark green fabric on the inside to disguise the inevitable tea stains!

Kads entry

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

DD's best friend has asked if I could make a " small, interesting " frame purse for her to use at her wedding in March. I've been 'playing' with texture for a while now, I already knew the colours for the wedding, and made myself a textured fabric on a cotton base using organza, silver & pink Angelina fibres and flakes. This was embellished with a variety of machine stitches in a pale silvery grey thread and then attacked with a hot air gun. It's definitely ' interesting  :D
I had the frame already in stock so made up a simple purse with a plain white cotton lining. At 6" x 4.5" it's big enough for tissues, lippy and little else but the bride to be likes it and that's what matters.

How clever @Kad  to even make your own fabric! It’s beautiful. :flower:

Just been looking at all the earlier entries , which are gorgeous. Beautiful gift bag and cases for needles and pencils and a very cute Teddy case, which obviously worked well despite the fur getting in the way. Love the oven gloves too. I’ve never tried making those even though I’ve made several tea cosies- must give it a go some time

@Bodgeitandscarper
I could do a thread that details the methods and 'ingredients' that I use, together with alternatives and options, but as I approach this as a 'play' activity I will/can not give precise instructions how to recreate this exact fabric.

A new pattern to me. A Gingercake oven mitt which I found on YouTube but then read about on her blog. So easy to make  :thumb: I used fat quarters and lightly quilted it. I added a hanger which wasn't in the pattern.   [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Ann Belcham Entry #2.

I used up the left over fabric from the gift bag and left over stabilizer from other projects to make mug rugs. These are embroidered in the hoop on my embroidery machine. There were no issues with the design as it is well digitized. The biggest thing is to sit near the machine to change the thread, add the batting and fabrics when needed and hand sew the back opening closed while waiting.

Hand embroidered from pics found on the internet!  Made with cream linen (it does have kitty fabric inside but limiting pics) and (as usual with me) I made the whole thing up as I went along putting it together with the only wadding that they had for sale at my local shop and a plate for the pattern!

Wild Atlantic Way’s entry

What I made: Teacosy.

Made as a present for DH as he drinks lots of tea and now DS has started drinking black tea too, they get through a lot of tea. I also bought him a new bigger teapot that doesn’t drip too!!

How it went:

I cut up strips of cotton from my leftovers bag in mainly pinks and purples and did some very simple patchwork and finally quilted it for the back. Wrote TEA using leftover strips and appliquéd them onto the front piece of fabric and quilted that too.

Used a layer of wadding and InsulBright but it still seemed quite thin to me so I got an old foil windscreen cover that I don’t use and cut it up and added it to the inner lining. I thought it would help to insulate it better. It made a weird (pleasant?) crinkly noise when I sewed it so I went quite slowly. But it does the trick. DH says it definitely keeps the pot hot, so I guess it works ok.
