Title: Wool Pressing Mat
Post by: Button Nose on April 27, 2020, 17:55:21 PM
Apologies if this has been talked about elsewhere, I did a search and couldn't see anything.

Has anyone got one, or tried one? There's an ad that keeps coming up on FB for one from LoveSew and it's not a bad price. Amazon has a bigger one which is always better, as we all know  ;), but it's over £60. I've got to this great age without one. Have I been missing out or are they worth the money and will it change my life?  :)

Excellent question!

I want one with the plan to stick it to a TV table beside me. I've seen them much cheaper than that though but again size, quality...???

Anyone?

I’ve looked at these... Ali Express have some at a fraction of the price and they do look identical

I was thinking of getting one for when I sew outside.

I got one from the Love Sew site and I am quite impressed with it. I wouldn't have paid the normal shop price though. It took about 3 weeks to get here but as the postage was only 2.99 euros I couldn't complain. I haven't got anything to compare it with, but it does seem to help get the seams nice and flat. Better than a towel, which I was using before. I'd recommend it.

DS2 got one for my birthday.  I haven't used it yet.  I think it came from Love to Sew but shall report back when I've used it!

Supergran, your post reminded me that I saw somewhere else someone said the stuff comes from China, perhaps that's why it takes so long.

I also saw someone saying a wool under saddle (?) blanket  from a horse shop would do just the same thing and be cheaper.

Looking forward to hearing what you think of it, Missie.

Were most of us really aware before just how much of the stuff we buy on-line (and probably in shops as well) comes from China?

Yes... an awful lot of stuff comes out of China. It’s about time we started manufacturing stuff again. The PPE thing is a case in point... put all your eggs in one basket and you’re screwed!

I don't disagree with the objective but we were screwed so long ago in this regard by our political and business leaders and most people's own desires for prosperity.

The path back to Made in Britain was dug up last century and is well and truly grown over. You'd need a machete, thornproof clothing and a long term plan well beyond a 5-year term in office for even a single track path through the brambles and I don't see any political enthusiasm for that even if it were feasible, do you?

@Button Nose Yes, it did come from China, perhaps most of them do and are just sold to lots of different companies. It says it's made from 100% New Zealand wool, and at first it did smell a bit woolly when the steam got into it. It didn't make the blocks I pressed stink though, thankfully.  :D
The one from Amazon may come quicker than mine did, if they are sent by Amazon and not from one of their sellers. Worth a look.
I've also read about the horse saddle pad thingy but I haven't a clue if it's true. You'd need to ask a horsy person about it, and where you buy something like that.

Yes, I think a huge amount of stuff we buy in this country comes from China but I thought the three week wait meant it was being posted to my house from China rather than coming through a UK company in the middle, which doesn't seem quite so scary  :|

The trouble with UK made stuff is that people are so used to paying cheap China prices. The collective 'we' are now of the mindset that we need ten t-shirts at £2 because who can resist a bargain, even though we do not value those t-shirts at all, rather than one t-shirt at even £10. Here endeth the lesson by the one who started the thread about cheap pressing mats   0_0
