Fun with Fabric / Re: Where are you all buying your fabric?
« on: March 13, 2024, 16:44:21 PM »
Snap - well almost snap @Lachica . I bought two lengths of linen-viscose prints from Pound fabrics  (rainforest and spring garden) and they are gorjus. I think they are fine for shirts @Acorn  - a reasonably sturdy shirt - not a lawn weight. The 55%linen/45% viscose are a slightly heavier weight but some of the prints are 20% linen/80% viscose and are a lighter weight if you prefer that as @Lachica suggests.

Also consider their cotton/viscose lawns - just scroll down the new fabrics page a bit. They have two abstract blobby prints and three flowery fabrics. These are super - they  are lightweight and with a slubby finish which makes them look like a fine linen. They are an absolute bargain at £3.50 pm IMHO! It's interesting - you never used to see cotton and viscose combined in a fabric but now it pops up all the time and seems to work well.

Machine Accessories / Re: Scissors
« on: March 13, 2024, 12:53:37 PM »
Yes we are all fainting at @Lowena 's scissor confessions! Many years ago DH borrowed my fabric scissors to cut wallpaper so I immediately gave him said scissors and bought a new pair. He knows he isn't allowed to touch my fabric scissors now. I have a pair of 40+ year old Sheffield scissors - after about 30 years I got them sharpened by a guy in Leeds market so I'll be back in for a sharpening in another 20 years or so. I have a couple of other pairs of sewing shears but none I love as much as the old Sheffield ones. I have a couple of pairs of those little 'stork' embroidery scissors - I like them too.

Sewing Machines / Re: Help please for this singer!

I have a Singer Brilliance - probably their simplest electronic machine - and it's absolutely fine. It is my back up machine though and I don't use it much. Like @HenriettaMaria I really don't like the front loading bobbin though .As well as having to take the 'tools box' bit off to get at the bobbin I can't see when the bobbin is about to run out. I didn't realise this when I bought this machine somewhat hastily at a bargain price. If I had to buy a new main machine a top loading bobbin would be a deal breaker for me.

I have bits for a peg bag. Perhaps this will spur me on to make it at last.

I've had some lovely stuff from SLF @Ohsewsimple . Their prices are good anyway but a sale makes them irresistible. Oh and they are really quick. If you order at the weekend your parcel will probably arrive on Tuesday. Happy be an enabler once again!

On until midnight Tuesday 5th March. Lots of bargains. Details here

And the trouble with getting your other half to drive is that they tend to act as a bit of a brake on fabric purchase..... I don't think I've ever managed to visit Standfast and Barracks on my ownio... but that's probably a good thing.

Here is Tamnymore's entry.

This is a 1950s swing coat using Simplicity pattern 8509. It's fairly easy as it is lined, has raglan sleeves, a roll back collar and 3/4 sleeves with huge cuffs. You can fold the turn up sleeves down a bit if you haven't got long elegant gloves a la Lucy Worsley and it's cold. I used a purplish Donegal wool tweed which I found on eBay. I can't be sure that the fabric is Irish but it's so nice I think it could well be the genuine article. Let's call it Irish! Difficult to see the fabric but if you expand the photo which shows a close up of just the front  with two of the buttons you can see the lovely neps in the tweed. The pattern has several options but I chose to make the long coat. I added in seam pockets and 5 buttons of which I see I've managed to button 4 in the photo. The coat version of the pattern didn't have pockets or buttons - definitely needed IMHO. The lining (not shown) is from Immanuels and the buttons are from a local charity shop. The pattern runs fairly large and I'm wearing a number of layers - but who wants a tight coat and it's certainly warm? I might make it again some time but in the jacket length.

@Ohsewsimple Luton is north???  :faints:  It's all relative!

Our John Lewis has stopped selling dress fabric and only has a few rolls of curtain fabric. I didn't know any John Lewis shops sold fabric now. John Lewis does have some of its own brand fabric which you can get (fairly expensively) on line and it's lovely stuff. Some, maybe even all of it is printed in Standfast and Barracks so rolls appear cheaply in their factory shop - another reason for a trip up the M6.

And just to say in terms of online shops ... Too numerous to mention but I'd highlight Pound Fabrics (not the same as Pound a Metre) which is always cheapest. I've often seen the same fabric at a higher, sometimes much higher, price elsewhere. Also Pound fabrics know their fabric contents accurately. I've had some surprises from other places so I'm wary of anything that calls itself deadstock. Simple Life Fabrics is also very good - see what they say about deadstock not saving the planet as we might have thought.

@Bill as you are in Bolton you are almost a Manc! I'm an adopted Manc..... despite sounding like Miss Jean Brodie.
