Vintage Machines / vintage zig zag machine
« on: July 01, 2023, 09:02:45 AM »
I have a very nice modern janome that does several fancy stiches and of course zig zag. I have some heavy fabric that should be sewn with a zig zag - think sail material from a boat. I don't want to ruin my modern machine so I'm looking to buy a second hand  more robust vintage one - with a powerful motor and does zig zag. Any ideas of what machine would be good?

Fun with Fabric / Blackout fabric
« on: June 10, 2022, 09:29:24 AM »
So far I have used blackout lining fabric for velcro-ing to the window frame. This works quite well and eliminates most of the light. Normal blackout Blinds always seem to have light at the sides and top. Is there a better method and better fabric. I notice that temporary blackout blinds are thin material - The lining fabric is fine for a while but wondered if there was something better and maybe cheaper? Any good ideas.? I need blackout blinds for small toddlers who visit and for me --I wake up far too early otherwise.

Vintage Machines / singer 95k40 is it worth restoring?
« on: February 10, 2022, 09:40:05 AM »
I have a 1955 singer 95K40 . It is not in a good state- the main body is ok but all the metal bits attached e.g. tension unit etc are rusty. I anticipate a lot of work getting this to be usable. My question is should I bother? Will it be a machine that I like at the end of it all. It has a large black motor underneath the tatty table/cupboard which I haven't dared switch on - my thinking is if I can get the machine to work nicely I might upgrade to a servo motor for it with modern electrics. Singer 95 doesn't seem popular is there a reason for this?.

Sewing Machines / bernina 830 and foot pedal
« on: January 18, 2020, 19:15:36 PM »
I have just got an old bernina 830 record electronic. I bought this knowing it had faults and thought it was probably worth a go trying to fix or get it fixed. It seems to have all the parts with case and manual and feet etc. The main snag so far is the foot controller which is electronic type 289. This will only work on high speed with no way of slowing it down. There is a button to change from max to min on the foot pedal but on min it doesn't power on at all. There is also a regulator screw which doesn't do anything as far as I can tell .The stitches all seem to work and I can get it to do zig zag and the other fancy option . My question is - what does anyone suggest I try next. I do not want to spend a huge amount of money on a new pedal  - is it possible to repair the pedal ? or indeed does the problem stem from the actual machine. I have managed to open the pedal and look at the inside which seems to look similar to a youtube video on type 290 but not exactly the same. Any ideas. Sewing machine repair shops are thin on the ground where I live

Vintage Machines / oil
« on: January 12, 2020, 10:10:35 AM »
Hi All Where is the best place to buy sewing machine oil in larger quantity than the very small little bottles in sewing shops.? oil for cars seems to have special numbers and grades. Is this the same for sewing machine oil? I have several old singer machines and even modern ones need some degree of oiling. Any ideas please for buying in the uk?

Machine Accessories / walking foot
« on: October 18, 2019, 14:59:57 PM »
I already have a walking foot for an older elna sewing machine now Janome I believe. It is low shank I assume. Will this fit a singer tradition  - a machine  that is lightweight for taking to classes. How specific do these attachments have to be? or is the fact it is low shank sufficient?
thanks

Fun with Fabric / fabric for making tyre covers
« on: August 30, 2019, 12:12:03 PM »
I want to make some uv protecting tyre covers for our motorhome tyres - they perish in sunny weather. Online there are details of how to do this this see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i72IbLOJcwo&t=623s However has anyone any ideas of fabric in the uk I could use that is cheaper but effective - maybe something like a tarpaulin Also it needs to be relatively easy to sew . I 'd be grateful for any ideas on this

Vintage Machines / what is this?
« on: August 25, 2019, 10:33:28 AM »
I found this in with an old singer sewing machine. To describe it is is a metal tool  with 0 to 8 on one of it's 'arms' - it has 3 prongs to it  - I wondered if it was to do with gathering or hemming . It is fairly small about 4" long and is sort of a tweezer of some sort.
Any guess what it might be
Many thanks

Fun with Fabric / lining for dress
« on: January 22, 2019, 17:39:45 PM »
I have bought a dress which is made of some lightweight polyester or similar fabric and I want to line the skirt part. I notice on other dresses they use a lightweight knitted something - jersey or similar which is one way stretch. What is it and can I buy it? I don't want anything that clings and it needs to be quite fine. Any ideas would be appreciated?
Many thanks

Any good recommendations for tweezers to use with overlockers/serger? length for example or good makes. I have some that came with the machine but they don't seem to meet up very well and want to buy better quality if they exist.

« on: August 15, 2018, 09:20:14 AM »
Can anyone recommend a tool.? looking online there are many that look similar but cost anything from £20 to £120 or more. I'd like something that is solid and not plastic. I've managed to put  poppers on clothing but with great difficulty and hope someone has some good suggestions.
Many thanks

Sewing Machines / lightweight simple portable sewing machine
« on: April 29, 2018, 11:21:30 AM »
What machine does anyone recommend buying? I am not bothered by lots of stitches so long as it does straight stitch and if possible zigzag but not essential. My main requirement is that it is light and uses a low amperage. I want something to take away on holiday in our motorhome. Sometimes we are on electric hook up or staying in a cottage so 220v is fine but to use it in the van the amps need to be low. Otherwise using it with an invertor will very quickly flatten our battery. Weight and size are also important so that I can easily carry it into places we might be staying . Any ideas - not vintage as they are too heavy. I'm not intending to spend hours sewing while on holiday but I do enjoy it now and again especially if it's raining.
Many thanks

Just got an email from craftsy -  coverpro basics and beyond. I am self taught on my machine using google. Has anyone used crafty courses and will I learn more? Indeed are there some good tutorials out there?
Thanks
