Title: Florals Rule - get ready for Spring & Summer
Post by: Manuela on May 06, 2018, 01:48:24 AM
Ye all have spokenst - loud and clear. So, Florals Rule is our next competition  :)

Here are the rules - me being German, I love a bit of rules  ;)

1. You shall make a minimum of one garment - it can be anything, top, dress, skirt, jumpsuit, trousers....
2. If you want to make more than one entry, feel free to do so, but submit them in separate posts
3. Please clearly indicate what pattern you used and what, if any, changes you made
4. You don't need to use a commercial pattern, self drafted is fine
5. Sewing starts on May 11th, you can prepare & fit the pattern and cut before that date
6. Sewing finishes on June 10th, please post pictures by June 15th

Please post any questions you have here, I'll modify this post with the answers so you don't have to search the whole thread.

:vintage:  :flower: Happy Sewing  :flower:  :vintage:

Thank you Manuela! Thinking cap going on now. One garment in one month might actually be within my abilities, especially with a week mostly to prep.

Hmm, I might be tempted. I've got a few Liberty metre pieces that I really ought to use up. Can't keep them forever in a box. I'll have a thunk.

Have never joined in on one of these but this might tempt me, I just have to look out fabric to see if I have any florals in the stash, or maybe I need to go shopping

I have a length of red and white floral printed cotton ear marked for a blouse, but yesterday more  :fabric:  :fabric: arrived in the post.  Both pieces are floral, but the plain which I thought hoped would go with them doesn't  :fish: so more thought needed.  I might manage one entry, I might manage two or even three. -<

hmmm I did some stash tidying yesterday and there is much deliciousness...but not anything much that'sfloral. ..and NO MORE is being bought until it all gets reduced dramatically.
So
Time to get creative...or just plain crazy.
I'm loving these Brenne crazy baggy trousers right now, maybe I should make some in the length of violently tropical cotton I bought two years ago...Blogged here (https://thedementedfairy.wordpress.com/2018/05/06/come-on-you-baggies/) and here. Maybe I could get that enormous butterfly right on my hooha? I'm very inspired by this fabulous video right now...

I just purchased these two fabrics from EOS and was planning to make a sleeveless SA Maisie Designer Dress (https://www.stylearc.com/shop/sewing-patterns/maisie-designer-dress/) with the knit for the bodice and the floral for the skirt.  They even showed up on the  "possible coordinates" side bar for each other.  I might change my mind and go with a black knit for the top instead.

@DementedFairy that is awesome.  What is even more hilarious, is that I had pulled the pattern for the skirt for this and then found a fabric that is reminiscent, but far, far less fantastic then this.  Hideous in fact.  So bad, I didn't even buy it, it came in a free mystery bundle...but too good of fabric to just toss but so ugly no one wants it.  And since I've been harping on my kid that you use what you get, and that you just don't throw things out...I can't exactly do it with this either.  (And I am swimming in quilt blocks so I don't need to use it for that, either.)

Now if I can get inspired by a pattern it'd be great.

So... floral... does it have to be "in yer face" flowers, or can subtle be used?  Ok, maybe it's not subtle, but it's subtley floral...

This one I though would be a dress with bits of plain yellow as there's only 1.5m, but the yellow I got with it just isn't right (wrong colour, not stretchy enough.)  However, it doesn't have any real direction to the print so It might well become a circular skirt.  If so I'll use the main skirt from the walk-away featured on GBSB a couple of years ago.  I've used it as a skirt pattern before; just adjust where the seam goes and add a waistband.

I have 2m of this printed ponte but I'm undecided what to do with it.

But aren't those three copies of the same fabric?  Confused!

Anyway, I would be daring and put both prints into one garment- go on, be bold

I have a stash full of florals so should manage something for this. In fact I've just cut out a dress in a lovely purple flowered rayon - it's a vintage fabric and I think it's rayon so let's see how that turns out.

I'm in! If I can't make a floral top in the time space I think I should give up!

Mudcat I love you plan for the Maisie dress! I bought the pattern after seeing someone wearing the style the day it was released but then got bogged down on how to shorten it proportionally and put it to one side.

I managed to edit out the original red foral fabric.  The two yellow and black ones are different,  look closely,  One is gigantic irises the other is stylised daisy type flowers.

I have quite a lot of floral too.  I could do something with these:

It's very soft and probably more suitable for a blouse;

I don't really know what this is, but the pattern attracted me.  Might be enough for a short jacket or pencil skirt, but I don't have a suitable pattern for either; and

This is a drill/twill and I would most likely do a full skirt from it.

I also have two lengths of precious Liberty Hanako (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=liberty+hanako+fabric&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjaivvX0vPaAhVIIcAKHWHmBTw4ChD8BQgLKAI&biw=1280&bih=672) in

Blue/green;

and

pink, which I am never going to cut.

My black, yellow and grey scuba is destined to be a hoodie jacket.  New Look 6142 (https://www.simplicitynewlook.com/6142).  Have just spent ages trying to find somewhere online that has open ended zips, and cord and herringbone tape for the neck.  In the end I found RibbonMoon (https://www.ribbonmoon.co.uk) and added a reel of thread to take it over their minimum spend of £5.  I've not heard of them before so fingers crossed.

Ooh, I might join in in this one.  I have a floral drill that I am wanting to make a skirt with, and also a floral print that I want to make a top out of, but I need to find some polka dot fabric to go with it as there isn't enough of the floral for the top.  *off to have a look*

Title: Re: Florals Rule - get ready for Spring & Summer
Post by: DementedFairy on May 12, 2018, 16:41:37 PM
It looks very like the technique used by Koos van den Akker on this skirt (https://img.etsystatic.com/il/65d91f/300561028/il_570xN.300561028.jpg?version=0)

You sew a piece of jersey down with lots and LOTS of parallel lines, then cut between them, through the top layer only. and leave the raw edges to curl.  With a woven, I suppose they would fray
The long strips on the Koos skirt are narrow jersey strips, arranged in swirls, and stitched down along both edges.  Time consuming, but not [fortunately for me] an exact science!
The end result is tactile, and changes with washing and wearing

Just as DF said. Two fabric panels sewn in long tram lines and top surface cut between tracks. Topped with curvy applique.

Hoping to start tomorrow. I've traced the pattern off.

My first bodge offering for this competition - this is possibly an entry so no-on else has to come last  0_0

This is not from a pattern I just copied a rtw top, altering the armholes as they were very, very wide and needed something underneath, so now this can be worn on it's own.

As I only had a short piece of this fabric, around a metre, there had to be a "compromise" - no-one will notice the back fabric is the other way up to the front, not by the time they've walked all that way round me to get there.

I also never gave pattern matching a thought as I was thinking the pattern was too small to notice - wrong!  I could have cheated and not included a pic of the back - but thought I'd give you all a laugh.

The neck and armholes are faced with bias binding, which has gone on reasonably well.  It also had to have pockets, I thought about fancy ones, but decided plain was much better with this fabric.

Despite the bodges, I really like this top, it will get worn lots - when the sun comes out again.

Haha, I've just noticed the dust on the top of the fire...  0_0  :P

My black, yellow and grey scuba is destined to be a hoodie jacket.  New Look 6142 (https://www.simplicitynewlook.com/6142).

The jacket is finished. :flower:

The sizing turned out to be quite generous, which is maybe why I think it should be a rain mac rather than just a jacket;  I'm still pondering whether to use spray-on or wash-in water repellant.

It all went together quite well but I used four machines to do it.  Main seams with the overlocker, pocket outlines and hems with the coverstitcher, lightening bolt zig-zag on the Husqvarna for the hood CB seam (then coverstitched) and a 201 for the hood cord 'buttonholes', zip and neckline tape.

@Fajita I've made Vogue 9271 8n black linen and I thought it was very effective. I'll post a pic on Wednesday. It is very loose and if I make it again I'll go down a size. I didn't rip the fabric though as it was striped. I used tartan fabric for the thin strip appliques

@Tamnymore, that's good to hear. Loose is always better than tight  ;)

But I might have to withdraw from this comp for the time being. My machine is being a bit of a bugger. Yesterday it refused to complete buttonholes, and today it's just given up on its feed dogs. Not feeding my fabric through at all.
I'm not sure when I can get to Bristol to put it in for a service.  Watch this space.

Best I can do is show you what I've done so far.  Side one awaiting buttonholes and side two awaiting an energetic feed dog.

Sorry, @Manuela , if I do get the machine sorted, I'll be back!

@Fajita Apologies if I’m teaching my granny to suck eggs and don’t know if your machine is computerised or manual, but a friend had similar problems with her feed dogs after sewing buttonholes. When I looked the straight stitch hadn’t engaged properly after switching between zigzag/buttonhole and straight stitch.

Well my project is fast approaching the bin  :'( Dunno why I convinced myself that a wrap dress is possible on my shape.

I know that feeling well. A few years back I made a number of fake wrap dresses, but being short waisted I hated how they looked on me (belt almost right under my boobs and all that) and constantly tried to pull the belt down.
However, I made the Cashmerette wrap dress for my step daughter a year or so ago, and she looks fab in it (H cup boobage).

Well my project is fast approaching the bin  :'( Dunno why I convinced myself that a wrap dress is possible on my shape.
The triumph of hope over experience.  I long for a wrap dress, but seeing that knit wrap top on me, demonstrated the impossibility of my dream.  My condolences on your grief.

I once wore a beautiful wrap top to the school disco :S and someone very kindly pointed out that it made one of my boobs look bigger than the other! I've never worn one since but I do like them and I too have enoooormous boobage and a small back and waist.

I'm long waisted and wrap styles don't suit me, they always gap at the front and reveal far too much underwear.  OTOH DD who wears large cup sizes often wears wrap styles and they look good on her, so I think that must be the secret - they are only good for buxom lasses.

@UttaRetch  yep! The wedding is in August, I need to have it done before mid July due to holidays so thought if I join in with this it might make me more motivated and speedy! The last outfits I made for a wedding I was sewing up my husbands's that morning! (It was just a pocket handkerchief  :D)

Late to the party here, but I've started to tidy the stash, and I've come across so many lovely florals which need using, that I thought this would be the perfect opportunity.

Do bear with me though, I'm not a good joiner-in of things, and do tend to forget that there are rules - and deadlines!

I'm thinking of Butterick 5536, and The Amelia Tea Dress.

Just need to find suitable fabrics now :)

Here's my pattern and fabric

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I have decided to line it for two reasons:
1) apparently it will make it hang better (although does that work with a pleated skirt?)
2) to use the lining as a fit checker.

Butterick 6217 - bought from Sewmuchmore a few weeks ago and some red and white floral fabric bought from Doughty's when the roadshow came to Gravesend last month.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I made view C with the sleeves from view B, though as they were those sleeves just looked baggy so instead of blind hemming them  (the same as the lower hem) I did a regular straight stitch to make a casing of the hem and threaded narrow elastic; just tight enough to make it look like a proper puff sleeve.

Scraps:  well my dears, so MANY scraps!  I might do some crazy piecing, and see what transpires…

Cut out your pattern from a base fabric (old sheet or whatever) and foundation piece/crazy patch your scraps on top of it, then make up the garment.

Make sure you cut any notches outwards (the way I was taught and do anyway) because little inward snips will surely surely come just where two patches join and will be   to locate.  Also choose a pattern that needs a fairly substantial fabric - it won't be light and floaty!

I've now got my dandelions - but not sure what to make with them, don't want to waste them on a new untested pattern!  They are kinda of thicker than I thought they would be, but still thin really.

That beige-y one is a much better colour in real life, and will mix with the light grey and the light blue, so I'm really hoping to use all three together.  The other two will be used for something else - not sure what yet.

Some more floral pics.
The ditsy print Claiborne top..tiny rolled machined hem on the sleeves, much better than a regular hem.
Hey June Santa Fe top with modified sleeve, it’s suppose to be a dolman sleeve but that’s just not flattering on me so I scooped out the armscye and shortened the shoulder length. The fabric is Art Gallery, it’s 95 cotton and 5 Lycra, it’s quite thick and spongy. Single fold bindings done on the coverstitch

It's not dissimilar to the Ginger and George top discussed in this thread (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,4327.0.html), but without the extra layer at the back.  It looks to be better drafted to get a proper fit on woven fabric rather than relying on stretchy fabric as is the case with the G&G one.

Entry number 2 finished  0_0
It's made from Butterick 6138, but without the collar and not using the front/neck facing, the front edge is turned back and top stitched, and the neck and armholes are faced with bias binding.  The fabric is muslin/double gauze from myfabrics.co.uk.
I've made this before and shortened at across at the armholes and just below, but this time took it up yet another inch at the armholes, which made them a bit higher and a better fit.  I also altered the back lower hem piece to make it a bit longer so it didn't go up too high at one point.
The seams are all top stitched, which, with this wrinkley fabric, stretched them a bit, but a good steam sorted that out.
Taking the pics outside shows the colours much much better.  It was a bit too breezy for the first pic, but then found a sheltered corner of the garden - and no, I hadn't combed my hair  :|

Looking back at these pics, next time I will alter the shaping at the side seams, as, having shortened it, it's flaring out from too high up really.

Well I've put the collar on. All it needs now is buttons and buttonholes. I think I'll leave those till I get my main machine back.

I'm not sure I'll ever wear this item. The decorative piece makes one half much heavier than the other.

I'm making slow progress!

The patterned isn't lined but I want to line it. How would you line a pleated skirt - pleat the lining too? A line? Gathered?

I don't want to add too much bulk around my hips!

This is the pattern (https://voguepatterns.mccall.com/v9269)
Title: Re: Florals Rule - get ready for Spring & Summer
Post by: wrenkins on May 25, 2018, 10:53:33 AM
I would guess A-line but I know nothing. I just imagine it would be neater.
I'm doing gathered slips for under flimsy things but I'm going to dart bits out to take away some of the fullness around the waist.
Is any of that even possible? I'll let you know.
I'm also doing open bits at the side seams for striding out. I don't see you having that problem with that pattern.

:flower: Ok - so here goes. This is Fran and Jane's entry.

The pattern was McCalls M7390 from a recent Love Sewing Magazine. I decided to make B but with sleeves from C.

:pattern:  8) Needed some pattern re-grading to give me more on the hips and the arms (as you do), so Fran did her grading tricks using the big french curve thingy I got her for Christmas moons ago.

:fabric: The fabric came from C&H Fabrics in Tunbridge Wells and it's a cotton with some sort of stretch so it must have elastane in it. (Really helped with the ease for the sleeves!)

:cake:  :snip: We started this with the Royal Wedding in the background, so we had lots of tooing and froing to ooh and ahh at the dresses in between grading and cutting out and pinning, etc.

:S Fran whizzed all the main sections up with her overlocker and I did the neckline and set in the sleeves which took as long as doing all the rest.

So I finished it last night and here is the result!

Hello everyone, I hope you don't mind me taking part. I've read through the thread and you all have done lovely work, can't wait til the deadline so that I can enjoy all the pretties.

I've only just joined the forum and happened to be making a floral top - so this is my entry.

The fabric is a rayon that I purchased from ebay, it was described as having a light cotton voile feel and it does - but it also has a slight seersucker texture that I like.

I was originally making from an old new look pattern but was having to hack it a bit and the fitting was frustrating me.  So I decided to make Deer and Doe's Datura Blouse instead!

It is a tight fight but wearable. I am in the process of making myself smaller though so I'm hoping it won't be a problem for long. Overall, I love it - I would have bought it in a shop in a heartbeat.  Now I'm planning all the other Datura Blouses that I want to make.

Great, thank you.

Given the size of our forum, and the fact that we just had our first 'birthday' the number of entries so far is really impressive. Well done everybody.
Remember, sewing stops at June 10th, and those who haven't posted their entries here yet, please do so until June 15th.

I will try to do photo tonight after work and post.

Ooooo, I might yet make it. Phone call to say machine is mended and working well. Just have to get to Bristol to collect it. Hubby working in Bristol on Friday. That might just be fortuitous. Especially as it should have been his day off.  :meow:

Here's a quick indoor picture of my top. The pattern is one I made myself from a favourite RTW top. The print jersey fabric was from deep in the sewing resources and I don't remember where I bought it.
I'm going to wear it today with dark brown trousers for work.

My trim showed up today and I made a muslin out of a 1978 Lutterloh pattern.  I was going to use Tailornova, but my printer went down, so you do what you do.

Welp...after a massive camel toe issue that would make the makers of the trendy underpants jealous, I about have that worked out and need to heavily modify the pattern which is straighten side seams, move and lengthen darts and add 10 inches! to the pattern (you would think with Lutterloh, the actual measurement would work wouldn't you?), draft a waistband (the pattern did not include one) and make another muslin.   Probably would have been easier to draft them myself, to be honest and I may yet do that.  But, I'll do that Wednesday and I'll have time to do several fits if I have to, and if I get the fit right, make them on Friday.   If not, I'll draft a pair Friday, fit them and then make them Saturday.  Due to the trim, I'll spend more time adding that on then actual sewing.  I'll cut the trim later today and Thursday and have them ready to go.

Hopefully, I'll only need one more pass with the modifiers to get the fit right and it will go easy.  But it never, ever does.

So this is where I am.

 All done.
Massively huge, so I will not be wearing it, and I'm a big girl to start with, and it drowns me.
But I do like the look of it.
Glad it's finished now.

Well here is my entry such as it is! The fabric is a vintage rayon from ebay- one of those where the seller is clearing an attic and has no idea what the fabric is. However a burn test showed it was a natural fibre and it seems much more like a viscose than cotton so let's call it rayon. It is quite dense and a lovely rich colour with a slight sheen.

Unfortunately the fabric is a bit difficult to sew and it tends to pucker on the seams and hems. I don't know how much you can see on the photo and I'm not entirely happy with the result but I don't love it enough to alter it any more. You can't see the detail very well on my version but it has some interesting details and I like the pockets.

I used the new Lisette pattern B6567. I made the neck smaller. I made the front bodice from one piece rather than two and I lengthened it to make it below the knee. If I made this again I would make the bodice more fitted and I'd make it tunic length.

McCall's 5056
Blog post here (https://thedementedfairy.wordpress.com/2018/05/29/flower-power/)
A tropical panel print, cotton lawn, plus an old duvet cover.  Changes to pattern- elastic waist instead of drawstring, shortened by 2", all assembly done fast and dirty on the overlocker.
Very wearable and comfy, and a great way to get more-than-a-circle out of a fairly narrow piece of fabric [it's cut in godets and rectangular panels]

This is my Style Arc Harmony top. https://www.stylearc.com/shop/pdf-sewing-patterns/harmony-woven-top-pdf/ (https://www.stylearc.com/shop/pdf-sewing-patterns/harmony-woven-top-pdf/) Fabric is a silky polyester bought from Lili fabrics at Manchester Hobbycraft show. Each sleeve has 4 pieces, 2 of which are semi circle ruffles that need ‘finishing’, time consuming! I used an overlocked edge and turned once option rather than a double turned hem.

Changes made were to increase side seams from 3/8” to 5/8”, with hindsight maybe the smaller size would have worked but it’s ages since I sewed a woven top so erred on the side of caution. I shortened length by 1 1/2” which is normal for me.

Not sure if I’ll make it again as it’s a fashion thing but nice and summery plus the sleeves are ‘arm friendly’!

This is the dress I have just finished for my grand-daughter (also shown on my diary thread). I used B3714 and made no alterations, except that I made the sleeveless version and then made a separate bodice, with sleeves and buttoned down the back, that can be worn over the top if the weather is cooler (this is to be worn for a wedding). I hope the pictures come out right - I have no confidence that I can do it every time!  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Wheee! I am so elated with my continued success at uploading pictures into the text, I thought I'd go to town and enter this too, also just finished. I used M6755 for the top. The only alterations I made were to self-line the sleeves, and because the fabric (a knit from Ebay) was such a pig to work with that I abandoned the buttonholes on the back and sewed the buttons through both edges.
The trousers were based on V1415, which was not designed for knit fabrics, and I lined them with habotai so that they didn't cling.  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]    [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I initially had the same problem.

You have to click the "attachments" list, browse and upload, then click on attach.

Then you have to click on "more attachments" and go through the process again.  Then repeat for the third image and the fourth image

The code it generates in your message should refer to image 0 for the first pic, to image 1 for the second pic, then mage 2 and image 3.

I find most of the processes on this site very easy but Images defeat me every time.
Having said that, for someone with the sense of direction of a homing pigeon, I've given up trying to navigate through the threads and sub threads and baby threads of child threads. I go to unread now and read everything. Trouble with that is I can never find it again as I don't know ehere it was in the first place.  :S
Good luck Helen...your top is beautiful...in the text or out!  :)

Brenda that is what I did and saw the codes you mention. Not sure what else I can do?

You have to upload one image, and attach it
Then you click on 'more images' and upload another image and attach it.

If you miss out the 'more images' bit you will keep on attaching the same image.  I've done that more than once!
Title: Re: Florals Rule - get ready for Spring & Summer

@Helen M - just as BrendaP says. I clicked on:
1.  Attachments and other options
2. Choose file - choose from your pictures and open
then, when your picture reference appears in the box
3. Insert attachment
4. More attachments
 and repeat the process.

This is the blind leading the blind as this morning I didn't think I could do it!

Lovely top Helem, cool, floaty and very trendy.

Plus the sleeve bits are not so long they will get in soup, washing up or catch on door handles. (Or maybe that's me? I had this great blouse I made with kimono sleeves and it kept stopping me dead when I went through a door and the handle got stuck up the sleeve, eventually ripped I think ;-()

I do wonder how you'd get a cardi on top

It's going to have to be one that doesn't have too tight a sleeve Ruthie! I tried it with a jacket that I have and it's okay so we'll have to see. I wore it today as they seem to think the summer weather is over for a while and it felt nice to wear.

I would never have considered this based on the pattern picture but you've totally sold it to me. I have some silky peach printed fabric that would work so well with this pattern. Thank you!

Hope you enjoy your top!

Finally got photos.  Pardon the ugly me.

Self drafted, poly ribbon trim, dress hooks, polyester suiting.

I edited for resizing photos.  Sorry again.  I know how to do this, but was in a hurry and brain took a coffee break.

@Kwaaked   Could you please include the photos into the text. Otherwise I would have to dow load them, upload them elsewhere to post them in the voting thread. You'll find a tutorial on how to do that on the previous page of this thread.

It will take me a couple of hours to get back home and do it if that's ok.

@Kwaaked - no worries, here the system allowed me to do it for you, with my moderator hat on.... sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't  ;)

No need to thank me, sometimes I'm able to do that at other times not, not quite sure why  :)
Anyway, it's a brilliant feature Fran gave us. That way we can post pictures straight from out devices and add place them into the text without having to host them elsewhere.

@Manuela , you can grab the URLs for the images from people's uploads without them being in the text if you like. Just expand the image, right click, choose "Copy image address" and it'll give you the address to the image.

Great, thank you for that   :)

Is it me or are the links to the individual entries not working? Or do we have to scroll through the thread to see the pictures?

Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it soon  :) It took me a while to get used to the forum features too.
