Thanks @Iminei , good idea! Will keep this in mind once I finish my 2 current things. Still working on Project Linus , so cant post pictures but also started a scrap quilt just for something to do. Will photos of it once I have made more progress. :D

Well yesterdays block was a joy! Took all my day tho' ... after procrastinating on here for most of the morning... but Im thrilled with the results, everything sewed together beautifully and came out just a smidge over the 6 1/2" size ... a teensy trim and I was done

Gorgeous!  I’m loving seeing your blocks, @Iminei , but have serious stash envy.  We need to go fabric shopping together.

OK,Houston I have a problem ......

Yep Youve guessed it ... its the patented Imi's run out of background fabric! D'OH!

As these blocks are coming fast and furious, one a day for two weeks ish Im reluctant to fall behind.

I DO have some other WoW fabric and wondered whether it would look too awful alongside the original fabrics OR should I sit on my hands and wait til the order I put in yesterday at Midsomer Quilting arrives ????

So as I've been playing with todays block ... I really dont like all the ?/8ths of an inch at all ... Is it possible to round the m's up to allow for Imis patented '1/4"' seam ??

I have two to show you, one with the original BF, second with the new BF ...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

and here next to the block it will be next to ...

What do you think Girls (dont we have any Guys here in the DS yet? ) I need your opinion!

PS If you love the batik as much as I do, it was a Chrimbo pressie from @Lowena  two years ago! Thx Hon xxx

I think they look good together - as long as there's a good mix (not random, but fairly equal) of them so it looks intentional!

And yes, that batik is gorgeous.   :loveit:

I think the difference is noticeable when photographed against the background of the dark green cutting mat. However, once the wadding is in place behind the blocks, and the whole thing has been quilted .... I think the difference in fabrics will be negligible. Beautiful fabrics, by the way. <3

My Midsomer Quilting Delivery ... Hoorah! ... arrived this morn so I have been very busy catching up!!!

There was a mistake in yesterdays measurements which after being rectified made the block a lot easier to get to the right size, so in a way it was good I had to wait! :)

Block 5, yesterdays block ... all in one background fabric

Phew!

Block 13 has appeared and its a simple Bimple HST ... to form ... Im guessing ... a star in the middle of the block ...

I'll do it tomorrow with the reverse image of block 11!! (just guessing!
Title: Re: If you're getting bored during Lockdown ...
Post by: Iminei on April 03, 2020, 07:30:49 AM
Yesterday was a goooood day ... I completed Block 13, which after all the panic turned out to be a 6 1/2" HST!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I also made block 14 which as I suspected was the mirror image of Block 11

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I also decided (as you do) that my blocks 2 and 3 were too dark a colour and they dominated the quilt so swapped the HST element of those with a better colour ... I hope!

Title: Re: Opinions please
Post by: Iminei on April 05, 2020, 10:45:09 AM
Well here we are at the end of the Mystery and Blocks 15 were quite frankly a bit Myeh!

4 blocks composed into a 12" (finished) star ...

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Considering she had us making fairly complicated blocks with teensy weensy 1 1/2" (finished) HST's I thought this was a bit of a cop out so naturally started going off piste.

I need to fill the 12 1/2" hole with lots of teensy HST's to give a ... glittering effect ....

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

But Do I do them completely random, as pinwheels, as Hourglasses or ????

Title: Re: Opinions please
Post by: wrenkins on April 05, 2020, 14:01:09 PM
You could put in a portion of your shimmer block ??? but personally I think a load of small HSTs all together and similar in tone might look like a solid piece of fabric. It will need some definition from somewhere to take it away from solid mass.

I don't mind her idea but if you want something more showstoppinger you may have to amp up the colours a bit.

Spoiler: show
I think block 13 is a cop out and looks like she ran out of ideas. I thought it at the time but when I see it in your 'finished article' it confirms my view.  :( Maybe the idea is a simple frame round a complex centre. What do I know?  0_0

Also I am the woman who has been looking at ideas for place mats for a week and still can't decide so feel free to ignore me.  0_0

It's lovely hun. However, I'd love to see it with the original centre as it's one of my favourite blocks.
How big is the finished article?
The colours are gorgeous

The whole quilt, without extra borders should come out at 60"

Its a ten block by ten block quilt, so One hundred 6 1/2" blocks (UF)

The centre blocks were Four 6 1/2" blocks that made up a star within the fins of another star and I thought it was booooooorring!

Im just pleased I managed to keep all those weeny HST's straight! and Ive got at least FIVE stars within my centre!!!

So this is how it was at end of play yesterday!

and for @Lowena  ... How it should look ...

Title: Re: Free Corona Mystery Quiltalongathon
Post by: Iminei on April 11, 2020, 11:42:32 AM
In the end I did unpick the areas that were bothering me and have resewn them ... They're still not perfect (to do with the way the seams lie I think but unfortunately in the way the blocks were made its impossible for them to lie a different way) but they are certainly less jarring and I hope will not stick out like a sore thumb!

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Sorry for the camera angle but this was the only way I could get the (almost) whole thing in the pic ... Next to layer the monster.

Oh and btw I did replace the very dark blues in blocks 2 and three ... I think that was a good decision!

Actually ... thinking about it ... I wish I had used more of the white and blue batik in the centre panel

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

But as it is right in the centre and would involve a War and Peace worths amount of unpicking I wont change it ... Will I???

I think the new blocks look better individually (as they stand out more in their own right) but in the overall quilt I like that they blend a bit more and so draw attention the larger pattern of the quilt.

The fabric from Doughty's has finally arrived ...

But it is darker than my original!

Now that may be the colour run for this batch but I have noticed a different texture to it almost like it has a dressing on it, and that there is no selvage markings on the new piece. This piece is extra wide and my original was not.

What do you think, first pic, (taken in blazing sunshine so apologies for it) my small piece (with selvage) on top of the new piece  and second pic with quilt top ... Too dark ???

Finally got off my (ever broadening) bum, hoiked Elvistoo into the dining room and embroidered the label.

I wish there was a way of knowing where the lettering was going, in a measurement from the edge of the block sort of way ... Anyhoo, its done; its not too bad and only goes on the wonk on one line, which I think maybe more to do with the original block being off a bit ... finished size 12 1/2" square, to be pieced into the back.

Layered .... its was the struggle I thought it would be as for some reason I cut the wadding and the backing a bit too short so I had to add an extra strip of wadding and baste very carefully to get it all square and on the backing but its done!! Thank God!

In other news ...
I am Loooooooving my new sewing room setup!!!    :loveit:   :loveit:   :loveit:

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

No longer do I have to clear the contents of the creaking ironing board in the corner to sew anything, No longer dare my kitchen counters full to overflowing with boxes and fabric and patterns and threads.
I take out just what I need and it sits quietly and neatly in the corner of the dining room looking like its meant to be there ....

and if Imself was here, no longer would the words 'I need to iron a shirt'(in these days it would be a blouse!! >:) ) bring on a sigh as I unloaded the contents of the ironing board onto the kitchen counters.

It Is Finished!

I thought a quick whizz round the binding with a blanket stitch and I would be ready for something else ... but then it became ultra apparent that The blanket stitch would show far too much on the White front so ...

so hand sewing it was.

Actually more enjoyable than I thought it would be as I listened to a SK book on my audible as I sewed.

I cut a Wide binding, 4" in width for a 2" binding, cos I like them and in one area the backing didnt quite cover the front of the quilt  and used TWO colourways of one design cos I couldn't decide which I liked best ... I think it worked out quite well!
