In the wardrobe / Helen Mirren's style
« on: August 25, 2023, 17:35:49 PM »
I've just seen the Daily Telegraph article showing Helen Mirren's latest style at age 78.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/style/dame-helen-mirren-style-du-jour-magazine-fashion-shoot/?li

She is looking fabulous! Coincidentally I have starting growing my hair long again, and plan to let it go silver when the back is grey enough. My hairdresser says it's still pretty mousy at the moment. Maybe I need to look at going for brighter colours, but that would need wearing makeup I think. I love the long black and white coat.

A Good Yarn / Drops Simplicity Cardigan
« on: July 26, 2023, 17:38:25 PM »
I finished this cardigan last month, it took quite a long time.  The yarn is Drops Alpaca, one of my favourite fibres.

As with a lot of Drops patterns the body  is knitted in one piece, then the sleeves are knitted and attached.  The technique new to me was the button band, it is called a double knitted band. Basically you pick up stitches all around the front and up to the mid neck, then cast on 16 stitches turn to the side and knit up the picked up stitches while creating a double thickness band! I had to watch the video on their website over and over until I got it.

I may make another in a different colour, this one is very comfortable. However next on my list is learning to do a stretchy cast on for socks, I've watched some videos but just can't get the hang of it so far.

In the wardrobe / Makers Atelier Wrap Blouse
« on: September 30, 2022, 18:13:38 PM »
I wanted a smart blouse for a couple of dinners I will be going to soon. The Makers Atelier latest issue  comes with a pattern for a wrap blouse which I have wanted since seeing Gillian Anderson wear one in The Fall some years ago.  The selling point for this pattern is that it fastens with a little button instead of relying on being perfectly fitted not to fall open !

This is a satin from Fabworks in purple with little grey stars. The hem and sleeves are gathered with elastic so it goes over your head. I bought a small button in chrome and crystal after an unsuccessful search in my button tin. It was supposed to be fastened with a thread loop but I couldn't get it to stay fastened properly. I  made a little fabric loop with my new prym loop turners which is more secure.

I highly recommend them, it took me precisely a minute to make a loop instead of struggling for ages with the traditional sort.

I've just layered my lag cabin lap quilt. Now I have to quilt it.

What style would Darksiders recommend that I can use, given I have an ordinary sewing machine with a small throat. Should I just do straight lines, with maybe diagonal on the border?

Fun with Fabric / Interlock Jersey
« on: August 13, 2022, 12:22:09 PM »
I have just seen an instagram post from Fabworks about their fabric of the month- interlock jersey. They said :
Interlocks are the ideal fabric for people who want to start experimenting with jersey/stretch fabrics, as they're more stable and versatile than single jerseys.🪡

I can't say I have found that to be true. In my experience they move around more than single jersey and I find it harder to get a good neckband that lies against the neck properly. Is this anyone else's experience or is it something I am doing wrong?

I am going to try a quilt for my DD's coming baby. I have bought a selection of FQ's suitable for a baby boy mostly little animals and dinosaurs in predominately blue . I want a suitable binding and wonder if a blender fabric is the right choice? I could use one of the  FQ's but the lengths would mean a lot of joins.

Tech Know How / Login failure
« on: December 03, 2021, 20:52:02 PM »
My mobile died this week, and I have been setting up my new one today. I have forgotten my TSP login password, and sent a message as requested. The site said it would send one but I haven't had an email back, can one of the admin people help?

In the wardrobe / Ottobre Dress 10-5-21
« on: October 04, 2021, 16:08:48 PM »
I bought the latest Ottobre magazine last month, and decided to make this tiered dress.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

It is too short for the look I was after and also the bodice ended too high for my present figure. I added 1 1/2" to the length of the bodice, and then laid out all the pieces of the three tiers of the skirt on my 2.5m length of teal viscose print. In the end I think each tier was about an inch longer. The pattern doesn't have pockets but I wanted at least one. Laying out the scraps I managed to squeeze enough for one.

I'm quite please, but may have made it slightly too long now. It will be an easy fix if I want to shorten it.

In the wardrobe / Tessuti Felicia Dress
« on: September 19, 2021, 22:00:10 PM »
My last summer make is a Tessuti Felicia sleeveless dress in a crinkly check linen; it is pale blue and black in colour. The skirt is a simple rectangle gathered at the waist.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

The checks look less off centre on the skirt than it looks on the photo. It wasn't easy to lay it out on the fabric, with such a big pattern.  I made it one whole square shorter in length as it felt too long. I also took in the armholes by 1/2" as they were standing away from my body.

In the wardrobe / Style Arc Clare trousers
« on: August 23, 2021, 19:54:26 PM »
My summer wardrobe needed another pair of linen trousers, so I chose to make them in dark rose linen/cotton from Fabric Godmother. This is the second time I've made Style Arc Clare; this time I took both legs in 1" and made the back waist elastic 1" shorter. They fit better this time and are now truly 7/8 length.

I'm wearing them with a Sew House Seven v neck top in cotton viscose. very comfortable.

This time I'm wearing a Style Arc Marley blouse  modded with short sleeves. It's a cotton lawn from Fabworks, and I got it out of 1m

I'm pleased with them, I love linen!

In the wardrobe / Style Arc Montana midi dress

This is the first garment of note I've sewn this Summer.

The fabric is a linen mix from Croftmill. I did a forward shoulder alteration of 1/2" to stop it sliding backwards as loose dresses have taken to doing, due to a lifetime of hunching over a keyboard. It's better, but I may need to add a bit more. I also took 1 1/2" off the length. I only had enough fabric to cut one set of bodice pieces instead of a fully lined bodice but it turned out fine just neatening the neckline and armholes.

It's very comfortable, and I may well make another next year. I have some linen for a Tessuti Felicia which is a very similar style but more of a pinafore for my next make after I finish some dark pink trousers.

A Good Yarn / Gloves mittens and scarf
« on: January 13, 2021, 17:38:23 PM »
I had a lot of unused Drops Air yarn after changing my mind about a project.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

It's a light fluffy yarn 65% Alpaca 28% polyamide and 7% wool, nice and warm. I used Drops patterns for the hat and mittens, and just knitted a length of garter stitch for the scarf with all the remaining yarn. I weighed the dark blue and white yarn and divided it in two to get the ends equal.

In the wardrobe / Maven Somerset top
« on: December 18, 2020, 17:32:13 PM »
DD is getting a Maven Somerset top for her Christmas present. I saw this Frieda Kahlo print jersey on the Fabrics Galore Instagram and thought it would be the sort of thing she would like.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I made the version with  3/4 length bishop sleeves in size 10.  I can't remember who recommended Fabulosew for pdf printing, but they were very fast and the paper is thicker than tissue but very easy to handle. The cost was moderate as well. I shall be using them again.
