Title: March's BOM - Courthouse steps
Post by: Iminei on March 01, 2020, 09:08:27 AM
Well here we are at the Second BOM of the 2020!

There will be Twelve 12" blocks for this years BOM:
Some months you will have two blocks to make and some only one.

In October I will guide you through layering and quilting your blocks
and in November I will take you through  assembling them, using a QAYG method,
into a fabulous lap or cot sized quilt (or even a series of comfy cushions.)

And everyone who finishes the year with a completed quilt (or full series of cushions)
will receive an exclusive The Sewing Place Prize Winners Badge

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

I have chosen a monochrome theme with pops of colour for my quilt,
you may choose whatever colourway/theme you like ...
Brights, plains, patterns, pastels, neutrals ... the choice is yours!

For our second month I have chosen a close cousin to the first, the log cabin block.
We are still working with strips and squares
but its all good practice to get you used to cutting and squaring up

MARCH (https://photos.app.goo.gl/8Keqx1xBwVzaFfLm7)

As ever when you click on the link, select the first picture,
and click on the i icon to bring up the destructions
on the right side of your screen.

Do read through The Basic Basics Thread (https://thesewingplace.org.uk/index.php/topic,9262.0.html) before you start.

Please post pics of your blocks each month and at the end of the year I will compose an album for the archives

I thought this month would be easier as I have the fabric but now I have to make a decision about which colours to use.  :S  I see some colouring in in my future.   :)

I love the minis though.

Youre not keen on Courthouse Steps @Lowena, well its not my favourite block either ....

but peeps have to learn to walk before they can run and have fun with HST's and the like ....

Also I spied this Fabulous cushion cover which is courthouse steps with clever colour placement

and yet might attempt it, tho' not in my monochrome theme.

No work today so thought I’d set to the BOM, having spent most of Sunday overthinking it.  Well, my sewing machine has other ideas.  I think it’s protesting after a weekend of sewing at the retreat and six hours at the sewing day this weekend.  It’s going for a service tomorrow.

I do have 1 1/4 inch strips and a plan.  (Of course I’m doing the mini Version.)

I had a go at the mini version this afternoon. Thought I knew what I was doing! Ha! Went charging ahead and realised I'd sewed too many strips around each block, so there's going to be some unpicking tomorrow. I'm usually good at reading instructions but obviously this time I didn't look closely enough. ><

Can’t decide on mini or big block. I was thinking that the big block would go better with the January log cabin, but the mini ones would be more of a challenge  :[

You are all so fast, although I’ve been a bit obsessed with my Project Linus quilt.  Yes, I know there’s no rush, but once I start I’m always keen to get on and see how the blocks look together. I have all the PL blocks and sashing done now, so should have time for this soon. :D

Those were my thoughts exactly @Sheilago but I've made courthouse steps quilts before so I thought I'd have a go at the mini ones. They're more interesting but I tripped myself up. :S

I have just read through the tut and what a clever way to square off before opening  :) I didn't expect that, thanks @Iminei.  As a relative newbie to P&Q I not yet made a courthouse steps block but always admired them, they look clean a neat. Can't wait to start this month  :vintage: :)

Post by: WendyW on March 04, 2020, 01:33:47 AM
Just finished mine. As last month, I did one with each of my solid colors, and decided to do one each of the sizes. I've never done courthouse steps before, and didn't like the look of the block with some full "diamonds" and some halves, so I changed it up a bit. I really do like the pillow @Iminei  posted so apparently it is one of those blocks that is best shown off in multiples, not singulars.  I did much better with my scant 1/4" this time. My blocks came out just a shave too big- just enough to trim off a few threads on each edge.

That is lovely @WendyW .... I wish I had laid out my foursome like that!  ><
Do you want a job?!

Yes, that cushion cover is smashing isn't it ... I think you'd have to start from the centre out and keep a close eye on your colour placement ...

and it will only work with high contrast colours ... I tried a small bit with the B&W theme and it really doesn't work :(

Ooh thank you for posting your photos @WendyW  :flower: My blocks have come out exactly the same as yours but I thought they were wrong. Now I don't have to unpick them - I can use your layout. Result!  :)

Post by: WendyW on March 04, 2020, 14:09:14 PM
If anyone else wants to try my alternative for the small blocks, I suggest making the center square at  1.75" instead of  2". My last layer of each color ended up just enough narrower to be visibly smaller, though the casual observer would probably never notice.
Title: Re: March's BOM
Post by: Sheilago on March 04, 2020, 16:14:45 PM
Probably a silly question @Iminei , but I am just working on the March block and it is going to be 12.5” without sashing, whereas the Feb block was 9.5” without sashing. Are the blocks going to be the same size as each other to make into a quilt or are these blocks intended as tutorials on the individual block type and then it’s up to us to adjust sizing if we want to make them into a quilt?
I’m just wondering whether to add extra coloured strips to my Feb block to make it 12.5” without sashing.  -<

Here is my first attempt at the big square. I’m trying not to buy new fabric, but I think there’s not enough contrast with these  >:). I like scrappy quilts and try to use as many bits as possible from my left overs box, but I think I might have to buy a few more mid blue fqs. I’ll  have a go at the small ones and try to get more contrast .

I didn't bother unpicking my blocks as I liked WendyW's layout. I'm quite happy with the finished block although it will require trimming a tiny bit to make it 12 1/2" square. :)

I'm going to leave the trimming until all the blocks are finished. Then I'll know what I'm aiming for.

Thanks @Pearl - the colours in the picture are a bit over-saturated. I used my phone to take the photo. The blue is actually purple but you get the general idea. The final quilt is certainly going to be bright! :)
Title: Re: March's BOM
Post by: Sheilago on March 04, 2020, 20:41:08 PM
Oh dear, I’m confused. I don’t think precision cutting tiny blocks is my thing.

@Iminei , I’ve got to the bit when you add a light strip to 2 of the blocks and 2 light strips to the other 2blocks. Before this I had 4 blocks with 2 light and 2 dark strips and they measured 5.5” x 5.5”. I thought once I’d added one strip more to 2 of them, those would then measure 6.5” x 5.5” and the other 2 would be 7.5” x 5.5”, but that doesn’t tie up with what you say. Have I strayed from the path somewhere?  :\

Time to stop for the night , I think! :drink: |O

I am just working on the March block and it is going to be 12.5” without sashing, whereas the Feb block was 9.5” without sashing.

@Sheilago  MY Log cabin block in February worked out to 8 1/2" and I then added a background border as I really couldnt be a*** to go round and round any longer and I had run out of fabrics going darker and lighter    :(

But I did suggest that to make it a FULL size log cabin to keep going! I may yet revisit mine and make it full size!

Now if you want a full size 12" Log cabin, you would continue with TWO more rounds of logs.

For a Full sized 12" block;

Using the traditional method of one Dark fabric, one Light fabric per round ...
You would need to cut FIVE different Fabrics in both Dark and Light.

For a Full sized 12" block;

Using my two different dark fabrics and two different light fabrics per round ...
You would need to cut TEN different fabrics in both Dark and Light.

I, however, am going to stop here and add a 2" border of my chosen background fabric for all this years blocks ...
A lovely woven grey by Pepper Cory fabrics ... its extra wide too!!!

I am trying to get all the blocks to work out at 12 1/2" as far as I can ... but you know me! -<

BYW I dont think your CS blocks has a problem contrast wise at all Sheilago, you have cleverly placed fabrics with least pattern opposite each other and the more patterned fabrics opposite eachother ... I think thats genius and your quilt is going to come out very country chic!

@Kenora ... What can I say ... its gorgeous, the colours are inspirational !!
Could I have a whole pic of the big block too?

@Sheilago regarding March's Mini blocks ....

Unfortunately I got carried away making this and forgot to take pics at that point so its perfectly ok to get confused.
This is also the reason the blocks look so shabby from this point on as they have been unpicked from a completed block, so have been rudely manhandled!!!

For the CS to join up in the mini version we need an odd amount of strips ..

Instead of sewing together TWO complete blocks... which would mean having 3 light strips next to 3 light strips which would make a great clumpy mess. (If you imagine the top two blocks in the pic below sewn together you'll see what I mean)

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-2wOe8GEUeBg3FsG-ESivhbF8Mj3IIW4cIjXAnwhcxY7nSbCTdlvERghUF5AatSEso8ety-3JzE-jliVBRvLNIKZWpx8SpOAFrkjGWrdZaCB9hcFxult0SmsoxF5SPH29KwmTS3iYwsM8lTKp4bt6-Xd_PteUyZo1pTtuqkl3Mc_PHY6R1AOphHitZfT_nimDReDHGj64pOwaY4ruKUC9Ozk2qE1HRsvtGRKrDM0LHVUAqX52cAHZhE2qs2tlksKpndaQESyuiZeuiPGXGA6jYBvtg9OifTwh9EzAQCSOAnEk1LUy3LBrhegTfBM8DtXQLUhwU8aHr9LV7_NxsjWrCyOFkVJUMHnur7A_rS-dXdA7Y3olBw-ouXhRqj8o-t8bVR3QSx2PiXQCrlxhv_HUhmgceV4WjG0idP1zGNFcDDZxtnsI7aMarSw734I9uAlH3Ghw_-SFxZgXl-q86uuPhJkpcNIPksMiJyPaM7Y1MoWguWvuoK22yZk_hSNmEx3vqgkAlsAfvR8O3u3xz0ACgqFS0NfEKvHsd9_7tCpSChVW_VeEHFISFIiX9Mb17GWMqSEoGy4HeYaR1wG6GQPlEUBl8lkBUvNHisDv8beM-81YgfPE649m3uN6XEapDzv-YGDUCSPpP4Gh2FpxiuvtKiO-GCVexly5EjDLJtOpZwpgwqPPzNMKdXV8eAnRkNGGrwIB5bqLMZVz-6GhpOlnvCUa4q4IdG-HtXz24yOsA=w840-h713-no)

We need to have one middle light strip with two light strips either side ... To achieve this, one of the blocks has to have an uneven amount of strips to the other.

So if you took one of the TOP blocks and sewed it to one of the BOTTOM blocks you will get the desired effect.

As for measurements at the stage shown above ...

The TOP blocks should measure 6 1/2" x 5"
and the BOTTOM blocks should measure 5 3/4" x 5"

Because we have yet to add the DARK strips to the top and bottom of the block which we are adding as continuous lengths instead of two strips after we have joined these ill bred units together!

If you were to make a quilt this way .. well you wouldnt ... this is done this way solely to make one  block of almost 12 1/2" sq.

Thanks @Iminei . I am not used to following instructions as I tend to see things I like online and then just try to copy them. I’ve not learned many short cuts ( like strip piecing) apart from when I’m doing half square triangles and probably do some crazy things when I try to work out myself how to make a block. That’s why it’s been an interesting exercise to do the BOM. I know , from the Bagathon, what a lot of work tutorials are- so thank you! :)

Ha... not my finest hour, this March BOM.  I think the centre squares would have had to be smaller , as someone suggested, to get this layout to be 12.5” square. I lost patience and my outer strips are narrower.....
Who says they all have to be the same size?! :P  At least the colour contrast is better and finished quilt will only be for my spare room. I’ll keep the quilt police out of that room!

Thats beautiful ... and if I do say so myself, the green batik is perfect!

Make a note on the block about its size and when we join them place your joining strip a sliver over the edges of the block and use the edge of the joining strip as your guide ... Well I know what I mean  :[

The green batik is, indeed, perfect @Iminei  :D

I have searched about on the internet for the same or very similar but no luck so far. Still, I may be able to use my fabrics differently on the next BOM when I find out what it is and eke it out to use on the majority of the blocks.

Not too sure about my choice of yellow fabric shades but I have it now so will use it.
Who knows adding other tone down colours in future blocks - if they should calm it all down, all depends on the furuture blocks

As it is a long time until April I may have a go at the small ones

Yes Girls you DO need a Background fabric, as for most blocks ...

Whether this is a neutral, dark or light is your choice ... I'm using the soft Pepper Cory grey .... but you do need  something that will bring all the blocks together

As for the joining strips ... that may well be your background fabric or maybe just a small print with the background colour as the ground.

Post by: Bjay on March 12, 2020, 12:48:53 PM
Oh
I am unsure about what colour to have for background/sashing - I was pondering a green background as the centres are green but whatever I have it will have to be bought as mostly I have scraps

I had also thought a sort of dark mustardy colour.

I'm thinking green for my background, but as I haven't properly decided on my other colours yet I'm a bit at sea.  I do have some appropriate cream fabric, but I don't think it would work with any of the possible colour schemes.

Hmm.

I find the colour choice the hardest part of quilting. :\ And it's made even harder by the fact that I usually have to rely on ordering online - the colours on my laptop screen are just not reliable. I've received some very strange fabrics in the past! This time I stuck to white, which you'd think would be easy - but, no, it's not. There are so many whites. I think I have just enough for a quilt but time will tell. I might be scratching around for a suitable white by the end of the summer, and I definitely don't have enough for all the joining strips. Will have to put my thinking cap on. :)

Oh I do agree. I ordered some dark - I thought black - fabric for these blocks. When it came it was a yukky green. I will try to use it.
I have been looking today online and am wary of ordering fabric for the background in case I have gone for the wrong colour again  :(

Click on the album, on an individual pic and then on the i icon (top right corner) and you should get descriptions up

It started out as a 3D block of the month,
that became a simple fun kiddie cot quilt
that evolved into a tribute for our much missed Vegegrows   :'(

Lots of applique, lots of quilting and The Original Elvis cut his (embroidery) teeth on it!!!

Title: Re: March's BOM
Post by: Lilian on March 15, 2020, 18:56:20 PM
I like the middle one too, I think the first may be too dark and detract from the block and the last one too light to show them off. The colours might not be showing true on the screen Your decision though  :)

Here it is. I think I probably need to do all purple
for 2 sides and all one of the other colours for the other two sides. I basically chose the wrong colours for my February block I think.
I would really appreciate any advice that anyone can give me. ( Choosing fabric for dressmaking is easier)
Edited to say that the colours shown in the image looked very washed out.
I'm just going to start again with this one.
Title: Re: March's BOM
Post by: Pearl on March 16, 2020, 16:22:32 PM
I really like your purple sides, @coffeeandcake and your February block was lovely.  I'm rubbish at colour so feel free to disregard my opinion, but for me, the floral fabric on the non-purple side doesn't sit right, probably because it has purple in it.
Title: Re: March's BOM
Post by: Iminei on March 16, 2020, 16:32:38 PM
I think Pearl is spot on with her analysis of Coffeandcakes block ... the purple flowers belong with the purples

But, just like me ... use that one as a practice block .. I really wouldnt like you to see how many blocks I make for each one you see.

If you're short of fabric, I'm assuming that's the Large CS block ???...
unpick carefully, iron ... maybe with spray starch and if you're not happy to reuse as is,
trim down to use for the mini blocks.
Title: Re: March's BOM
Post by: Sheilago on March 16, 2020, 17:49:19 PM
I agree with the others @coffeeandcake . It’s a lot of unpicking, but if you replace the purple floral blocks with a neutral plain-ish fabric,it will look lovely. :D

Thank you so much Pearl, Iminei & Sheilago. That is really helpful so I'll have a little play in the next few days.  I don't mind the unpicking (used to that :S) but I have enough fabric so I'll probably start again anyway.

My preference would be the middle one as you need it to be consistent in values to showcase out the blocks rather than compete with them .. the batiky one for me (and you know I love batiks) is too dominant with the dark splotches.

Lovely fabric tho' xxx

I agree with Iminei - I think I have some of the middle fabric in a different colour, and it's nice fabric.  If it was the backing I'd say the one on the right, I think.

I was thinking maybe a pre construction or  pre quilting homework as I have done neither to any extent. Some QAYG practice or something??? As demonstrated by my mug rug efforts, my skills are seriously lacking in these areas.  :S

Of course if we were really good swots students we could do a BOM or two from previous years.  8)

I need more fabrics if I do all the blocks  this year and I don’t usually buy quilting fabrics on line but as I’m not going anywhere for the foreseeable future, needs must.

I’ve just spent ages on Doughty’s site and am getting nowhere. Too much choice makes me indecisive.

Thank you ... I was literally finishing the Quilting the Saturday before I had to take it up to FOQ (2018) on the Monday!

That was the hot summer I had a broken foot and pretty much ALL i did was work on it inside as it evolved.

My then husband came down from the deck at one point to find me tearing the quilt apart as something had gone wrong ... He grabbed it from me and legged it upstairs with it, where of course I couldnt follow ... to give me time to calm down ... which I did.

In fact there are TWO places where it has been 'reconstructed' ... one where the embroidery went awry and one where I tore it ... If you can find those places ... I will send you a prize!

Thanks so much to everyone who left encouragement after my first attempt (February). It really was a balm to spending a lot of time producing something I wasn't happy with.

My ruler and rotary cutter arrived and compared to tape measure and scissors I feel like I'm living a charmed life. Much less labour intensive and more accurate, even managed not to cut myself.  :P Much more pleased with this attempt, even if I did misread the desired strip width and end up having to do an extra step.

...even managed not to cut myself... yet!  ;) If you ever watch any of the Missouri Star Quilt Company tutes you will notice Jenny's plaster on her right index finger. She either cuts herself regularly or she made 3000 videos in one day! (She's left handed).  0_0

Being left handed makes not a jot of difference when using a rotary cutter!
My LH friend, a fellow teacher, used to get really annoyed with other teachers for shaking their heads and saying sadly, 'Ah, but he/she is left handed.' She pushed to get LH scissors in school and was as good a self-taught calligrapher as any right-hander.

And their postage rates are very good indeed - free over £10 and it seems to be just £1 for orders below £10.  I'll let you know how quick their delivery is...  ;)

Yes Fabric freedom Butterfly ball ??? if I remember correctly a gorgeous range ... Cotswold Needlecraft you say ??/

Supergran, that is lovely, the blue gives it an almost stained glass look, doesn't it?  ...

Neither Log cabin or courthouse steps are favourite of mine either BUT I did promise a BOM this year for absolute beginners and those two do teach you to be accurate with your cutting and piecing which really is the foundation stone of P&Q isnt it?

Lovely to see you catching up SG and I do hope you last the course as I really would like A prize winners badge to wing its way across the water to Spain (with me attached to it perhaps!)

Now that's what I call fast! And free delivery? Even better. I might have to do a trial order and see what it costs to send it here. Obviously it will take longer, but we are used to that.

Ive been meddling in their checkout and looks like orders over £10 to Europe cost £5 delivery ... Don't know if that disappears over a higher threshold ... You could always give them a call/drop them a line and ask ???

The FREE postage on mine cost them £5.57 !!!

I haven't ordered anything yet because I've  just heard of a craft and quilt shop fairly near. Villa Martin plaza @Iminei . I'm going to check it out Thursday morning. Here's  hoping they have lots of fabric. And things.

@Iminei that's all there was last time I was there as well. Judging by the pictures I saw it's a good sized shop which surprised me, but photos can be deceiving. We'll  see.

Visited Cotswold Needlecraft today.
A small shop absolutely crammed with all things needley. Only 2 people in shop at a time, and when I was in there was so much I think the best way to buy from them is online, There was was one person buying a complete set of fabric for a quilt  but she hadn't worked out yardage which meant there was hardly room to squeeze past
Not really enough room to browse
Most of stock was in boxes as it was so busy
@Acorn I love thoese colours - supa
Didn't buy anything

Visited Louise's Crafty Corner today. @Iminei VillaMartin is still a scruffy dump and the plaza is nothing to write home about. Full of bars, cafes, and estate agents and the craft shop was the only interesting thing there. It wasn't as big as it looked on the photos although there was a lot of stuff squashed into the small space. When I got there they were just starting a needle felting class and were making little bumble bees. I got 4 different fabrics and may have bought more if they had taken cards, but it was cash only. A lot of the fabrics were ones that I know have been out of production for some time, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but she needs to stock up on the necessities like cutter blades and rulers and general stuff like that. She did have Mettler thread though, which was good to see, and I will likely go back occasionally even just for that. Who am I kidding? Go into a fabric shop and come out with just thread? I don't think so!

Loving those fabrics ... Fabric freedom amongst them ...

Needle Felting class??? So no social distancing going on there? Yes I was always surprised at how down at heel the Villa Martin social area was ... for a super swanky golf club frequented by Mr W.

Glad there's somewhere near you that has some fabrics available and as someone who's always chasing round after an out of print fabric, it could be very handy!

Post by: supergran on July 10, 2020, 20:55:17 PM
No, @Iminei there was very little sign of social distancing in VillaMartin. The shop owner and the felting lady both wore masks, but the 4 or so class members didn't and they all seemed to be sitting too close for my liking. There was also no hand sanitizer available, so if I go again I will take my own. It was completely different to our town where almost everyone wears a mask and staff in the cafes all wear them and gloves too and the tables are widely spaced outside. The shops won't let you in without a mask and there is always hand sanitizer near the door.
It's actually mandatory to wear a mask if you cannot keep your distance and if you are caught without one on your person you can be fined.

@Iminei  Iknow all that but if your machine does a cut and you find you have extremely short ends where possible i darn them in. but sometimes the ends are so short I can't even thread a needle

Thanks anyway
And I know I shouldn't rely on the snip off the machine, but I do!

Dont auto cut then Bjay ...

When you come to the end of your stitching, just raise the needle and presser foot, pull out the block and cut the threads longer.. Thats what I do.

@Bjay  I don't have auto cut ( :loveit:) but if when I cut mine too short it drives me nuts. Not the lil threads, my stupidity.  :headbang:
I've now decided that I need one of these. I use those a lot @wrenkins  .... but even they can be a problem if the threads are shorter than the needle ... the way to do it is to insert the needle (only a short distance as you still need to tug the threads through) and then thread the threads on to it.

Yours is lovely, @wrenkins .  No need to redo.  It doesn't stand out like a sore thumb like mine did.  I lay them all out and DD asked, "Why is that one grey while all the others are white?"  Good question.  Why was that?

@supergran, I am so happy to hear you say that - I am following the same mantra. I decided my BOM quilt was going to be made up of scraps and bits that I had and that an absolute minimum would be bought for the project - if any. As a result, I have run out of some scraps and had to progressively add others. I hope it will look alright in the end...if not, I will always be able to look on it proudly as a great many lessons learned....and then hide it from view in the laundry room, I guess.  :S
