Title: Sewing Spaces
Post by: Morgan on March 01, 2017, 14:33:17 PM
3rd floor room cleared,
shelf units moved
height adjustable cutting & sewing tables bought, assembled and installed
portable plastic drawers (temporary) storage installed for fabric
Machines, equipment and supplies installed
Fabrics culled and only those fabrics that will be sewn up have been allowed in (As the fabric is used, the empty drawer units will leave the sewing space because the aim is to not have a fabric stash and buy by project)

finally got to sew with the new sewing machine ;D

Unable to load the photos into the Gallery (It doesn't seem to accept upload for sites other than the 'puter/device) so

Hi Morgan.. sounds like you have been really busy.... I particularly admire the line
(As the fabric is used, the empty drawer units will leave the sewing space because the aim is to not have a fabric stash and buy by project)
you must be strong willed for that
is that your assistant Tilly boo with the new machine?

The last and only time the little pocket rocket got to supervise me so a poignant pic.
A few hours after that pic was taken last Friday evening, she died from injuries after being clipped by a vehicle.
Much sadness.

Fab sewing space, Morgan.  So sorry to hear about your cat, very sad.

Can you tell me where you sourced your splendid cutting table?  I don't have room yet but will do in about 12 months' time and would dearly like one of those.

Hello DV good to catch up again!

This is my sewing room, and it always looks like this! I was going to tidy up then take a picture but hey let's shatter the illusion that CH is neat, ordered and tidy. My overlocker is usually out on the table too, no idea where that has snuck off too, maybe it was on the dining room table. I love it, it's cosy and the room is on the corner of the house so I sew and see all that happens outside. There's no room to cut out, but there's the dining room table next door for that, and there's only 2 single plug sockets which is my only grumble. There's usually a few projects ongoing at the same time, hence the mess  :D

I'm lucky to have a good size room for my sewing I have 16 lack tables stacked into a block 4 tables long by 2 wide ( like this https://customstyle.wordpress.com/2011/08/26/how-i-organized-my-sewing-room/ )... the 2 layers gives me a full set of shelves under the table so I stack plastic boxes 4 deep 2 per layer on one side the other side is used for rolls of curtain fabric and lining plus all the interfacing stiffening's and wide buckram on the top I have a wooden board 2.5m x 1.4m(cut into 3 panels to get them upstairs) this is covered in 3 or 4 old wool blankets and a layer of cotton interlining then an large cotton sheet which means I can iron onto it ...perfect for curtains

They are two of these (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/table-tops-legs/linnmon-finnvard-table-white-spr-09001986/).

The table tops are light and hollow which make them easy to move around by one person.  I chose the gloss finish ones but there are several other options.  As my table tops are hollow to attach the adjustable bars I used strips of No More Nails Permanent Adhesive strips rather than the rather odd screw fixings supplied.  They are brilliant - the adhesive strips and the tables that is.

originally I really wanted one (or even two) of these electronic height adjustable tables (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/desks/office-desks/bekant-desk-sit-stand-black-brown-black-spr-19061183/) but bearing in mind my sewing space is on the 3rd floor it wasn't to be this time.  When I eventually move house, it may be the solution for the next sewing space.  Same idea but cost significantly less than the Horn version.

So sorry for your loss Morgan.
Good to see everyone's spaces.
I have half ( well,ok, over half ) of the workshop attached to the house ( used to be a garage, so you have an idea of the proportions ) I have an old desk on which sits my only  sewing machine, travel iron and pad. At right angles I have an old dining table, at which I sit to plan etc and across the aisle I have a worktop for cutting, large mat and Sissix live there. I have a shelf unit for various boxes of supplies. When my stash box is truly empty ( won't be long now ) I'll buy extra wadding as it is something I often forget about until it's needed  :|

My this is a minor miracle, to finally get a picture in!  :toast:

As I was trying to say, this is mine, at its best time, after the new carpet was installed but before things were put back!  The room is a funny size, 17ft long but only around 9ft wide.  I've not taken any recent photos, partly because it looks so cluttered, even after having a recent declutter in January, when it did look tidy.

I'd like to take a current one but the only one I have was taken was probably some time last year at the other end of the room and there have been some changes, although not many.  My Siamese is ill at the moment and has taken to sleeping under the desk out of sight so the multitude of sins that were hidden under it are now out on show, so you can understand why I am so envious of other people's sewing space, although I appreciate some sewers are restricted to the kitchen table.

Morgan, you really do not want to see my sewing space - it's  a tip!
This also goes for me, except I'm not willing to inflict a pic of my space on me, let alone anyone else! It's bad enough living with it. I don't really have a space as such but areas all over the place with stashed fabric and haberdashery in assorted boxes and drawers (and bags stuffed behind the sofa  ><).  :(

At the moment I'm in a long war of attrition with my OH as to why we need to have a major reorganisation. I know it'll be a nightmare (that's both in doing it and living with him/me while it's happening) but it would be so worth it.

Morgan, I am so sad to hear that you have lost one of your precious pets.   <3

Here is a shot of my sewing space.  And yes, its tidy, it pretty much is always that tidy.  I have major problems with sewing block, if I let the space get out of hand.  It my own special brand of obsessiveness.

I have to say that when I have tidied up and got rid of/hidden things, I feel a lot better.  Only thing is it doesn't last long, I pull things out in a hurry and don't put them back.  I blame it on lack of sewing time, I really only get Monday afternoon and occasionally Thursday afternoon and I'm retired!

When I got a new cleaner I kept the old one specially so I could keep it upstairs and clean the floor regularly!  Hasn't worked.  What I could really do with is down sizing on the sewing machines but they all seem to have a little job they do well and it is hard to part.

And to think I lasted 42 years with only one sewing machine, no overlocker, no coverstitch and a small desk in a corner.  I  chose the pattern, thread and fabric and that was it until the next project.  No stockpiling of anything.  I blame the internet!

Also the fact that in many places there are just no fabric or haberdashery shops any more.  I have to make a 40 mile round trip for a reel of thread and over 100 mile round trip if I actually want to see & feel some fabric.  I currently have 2 items waiting for fastenings.  My pockets are always full of little pieces of material just in case I come across a shop selling buttons.  When I buy from the internet I often get several items to get over the minimum spend for postage.  I used to just go & have a browse and get the stuff I needed when the fancy to make something hit me.

Yeah just a bit of a drive.  I helped a girlfriend really demolish her sewing space, and I find it fun, although its hard to convince a creative hoarder that she really doesn't need 200 old quilting magazines that she never opens.  Her space is much more conducive to working well, and considering she is a professional quilter, it looks so much more professional to her customers.

I still haven't done any real sewing for ages ..... I am just not all that inspired right now.

Just finished my big 'tidy up' - should have taken a picture.  At least I can find my traced patterns now!

Fabric is another matter, that is an ongoing headache.  Do you sort by colour, fabric type, fabric use, quantity?  Big problem ...

The only box I'm ever confident about, is the white box, but colour sorting gets tricky when it comes to florals.....

My sewing space is going to be demolished very soon, hence the complete lack of organisation.  It's the conservatory which is a worse than useless space - too hot whenever the sun is out, and too cold when it isn't!  When the new extension is built our current kitchen will become my new sewing and knitting room, with hopefully enough storage to keep it tidy.  I just hope there will be room for both knitting machines, as well as the sewing machine, overlocker, coverstitch and embroidery machine.  Oh and the embellisher machine... And the collection of antique toy sewing machines...  And the lovely old pale blue Jones machine...

That is really impressive tidiness, now I really am worried.  I could work in that, but whether it would look the same in a couple of weeks time, not sure.

In fact now I've gone further down the page I'm just going to crawl in a hole and give up.

These piccies were taken a while ago. Room was tidied a bit for the purpose.  :P. It has changed a bit since but not much.
The cutting table was made by my dad and it's the perfect height for me.  Not fancy but does the job.  And for those worrying about tidy.....it is frequently covered in stuff that is brought up to be 'put away sometime later'.  |O
The cupboard is a real problem.  Doesn't look too bad here but it is rammed with books and files and I can't get to a lot of stuff. Really need a sort out!

I don't have a spare room, but I can no longer be bothered to drag these

out of their boxes which I keep behind the sofa, and any length of time that I spend tracing off patterns or cutting out sets off my sciatica.

I used to sew on my kitchen table, but the light was behind me so I bought a daylight desklamp.

So sorry about your cat - she looked beautiful.

My sewing space is still the dining room, but since we have moved it's a separate room and I can make a mess in there and be able to shut it off out of sight. Because we have to use the room when visitors come though (a frequent occurrence), it makes me clear it up often and keeps things organised. I have managed to split the stash between two plastic boxes and a large basket. The boxes are under two different beds and the basket is in the smallest bedroom. It really looks as if I haven't got very much................

Title: Re: Sewing Spaces
Post by: Snippet on March 25, 2017, 09:37:36 AM
I used to do my sewing in the dining room and used a storage room upstairs for all my bits and pieces. The dining room overlooks the garden so this year I thought that I would re-purpose it into a little sitting room with a couple of comfy armchairs so that I can admire Mr Snippet's endeavours in the garden. New carpet on order, and a local charity coming this morning (I hope) to pick up the dining table and chairs.

So (or is that 'Sew') I needed to move my sewing machine to a new home....

The storage room where I keep all my 'stuff' is a really useful space off a spare bedroom - well, just a box room really - which we used as a dressing/laundry room. Quite useful really but not as useful as a sewing room! I moved the drawer units into the storage room, dismantled the wardrobe and stacked the long side pieces on top of the drawer units to make a cutting table. It ought to be a bit higher really, but it's good enough. I bought a desk with a slide out extension from Ikea for my sewing machine and overlocker.

The photos don't really do it justice, and it is still work in progress, but it's really nice to have a proper sewing space all to myself.

Before and after -

Edit: and I've no clue why all the photos are the wrong way around...

I do envy those that actually have rooms for their sewing.  I have my sewing machine in a Horn cabinet that also takes my overlocker which stands in what was the kitchen end of the dining room along with a cupboard beside it to take bits and bobs.  Work in progress is often hung from a wall light nearby.  I use my dining table raised with elephant feet and covered with a board to cut out on although I did have a long run of units when the kitchen was redone so that I have a long surface for cutting out smaller pieces.  My fabrics are spread in various rooms and plastic boxes in the roof - can't get up there at the moment so it's a good job they are not quilting bits.  I have one drawer in what DD2 still thinks of as her bedroom with quilting fabrics and one with mainly silks that she has brought me back from China and India.  Oh and there are also some fabrics hanging on hangers washed and ready to cut out in the wardrobe.  DD2 will need to keep her clothes in her suitcase while she is here.  I've thought about getting one of those fabric shoe hangers for DS's wardrobe to put fabric in.

I still have a chunky knitting machine in a wardrobe and as I also had an electronic one an frightening amount of coned wool wrapped up in the roof and I do mean frightening.

. . .   I've thought about getting one of those fabric shoe hangers (http://www.argos.co.uk/product/9104866) for DS's wardrobe to put fabric in . . .
I used 2 canvas shoe hangers in a wardrobe for fabric and they were great.  I liked to roll up the pieces.  The fabric is in another room now but I still use the hangers, this time for rolled up towels and the bedding for a single bed.
They're also handy for boxes of the right size.

I've not got the shoe hangers but I have got the one with the pockets, which hangs over the door.  Hides a multitude of sins:  air fresher (the cat's litter!), zips, (long short, open ended) bags, Carpet cleaner, carpet tools, unused mice (batteries dead), charging units, kitchen roll, iron cleaner, dusters, binoculars, old camera, moth packs.  Very useful!  On top of the door I have one of those clothes hanger with around six spaces for coat hangers.  Trouble is there is that much weight on it the door is always open, can't hide the rubbish away.

Here's one corner of my sewing room. My Janome is out of shot but I think the Singer is more photogenic. She's called Margaret after her first owner, the mother of the e-bay seller. As yet I've not used her as much as I intended

Photo one ..... Now you see it.

Had got the Now you don't but for some reason it's not loading ...comes up with stuff telling me why not which is making no sense this late at night! I'l think about it in the morning! Stoooopid computers don't they know they are our servants!

My sewing room doesn't have any space. It really is jammed with furniture and machines. Slightly less than 9ft. square and there are 2 knitting machines, an overlocker on an old wash-stand, a sewing/embroidery machine in an old cabinet, an old straight stitich machine (used for mending horse stuff), a chest of drawers holding embroidery frames, 2 chairs, and a dress-makers model. Every available surface on top, inside  or underneath is covered with plastic boxes containing fabric and patterns. I will take a photo when I can find somewhere to stand!

Phew, that's a lot in that space crookness. Would like to see how you organise it.   :)

I've finally got my sewing space reorganised. As Morgan wrote, the biggest headache is fabric storage, and that isn't really resolved, but it's now well enough tucked away to be able to get to the necessary equipment without hassle. I don't have custom built units and tables, all is a bit make do and mend. I've grouped stuff according to activity, and included places to put things while they're waiting to be filed away in the right place, temporary holding areas, because I know I will never get to Datcat's level of perfection. So, there's a rack for downloads that haven't migrated to the proper place, a small box for patterns not filed, a dish for bits and bobs of buttons etc not yet in the right box and an envelope for pattern pieces that have strayed from home. Everything but the current project, all that mending and half-abandoned WIP stuff, is stuffed into a large zip up plastic bag thrown under the cutting table. The habit I really want to kill is covering flat surfaces with projects in waiting.

Jen I would just like to know how to stop covering the flat surfaces, full stop! :o. They are always covered in bits of pattern cutting paper, pattern pieces, fabric and tools.

Ohsewsimple, I'm hoping that now I can actually get to my shelves without gymnastics, I'll get better at putting things away. Also, the new rule is only one project out at a time. We'll see how this works 0_0
