Welcome to
TSP's Mystery Quiltalongathon Block for 2021 ...

After the great success of last years QAYG BOM,
I decided to combine the BOM with a finished article,

A Mystery Quiltalongathon !!

A BOM with an agenda !!!

but here's a clue, I've called it

The Sparkling Stars Quilt

I thought, as Stars are so often referred to as Diamonds,
I would assign a different Gemstone to each Block.
and try and convey a sense of that jewel with my choice of fabrics .......

You can follow my choice of gemstone for each star ...
or choose your own according to the fabrics you have to hand

Here we are over Halfway through our MysteryQuiltalongathon Block of the Month


So for the FOURTH Block of

because you will be reading right through the tutorial before you start cutting or sewing

Block FIVE will be released on Saturday  17th July ...

There will be SIX Gemstone Blocks, posted at 6 weekly intervals
from the end of January to end of August,
giving you ample time to gather your fabrics and make your Stars!

You will need to make between FIVE and THREE Blocks for each Star.

The techniques used throughout the Sewalongs will be fairly simple
and there are Tut's available in The Darkside Tutorials should you need to refresh your memory.

This Mystery Quilt comprises a 5 by 5 grid of 12" (f) blocks
to make a finished quilt of 60" sq,
before any added borders or sashing.

You can of course make it smaller or even larger if you wish.

* * * Fabric Requirements * * *

This Mystery Quilt will require approximately 3m's of
ONE consistent background fabric throughout the quilt

and a different Gemstone colour each month ...
within which there will be between 3 - 6 different shades.

(I'm not so good at the Maths but a 1/4 metre or FQ of each gemstone colour/shade should be ample)

And everyone who finishes 2021 with a completed quilt
will receive an exclusive

It looks lovely and I think I have enough different fabrics from the haul I bought recently. :) I'm tackling the PL quilt first though as I want to make sure I get it finished.  :)

All cut out and started chain piecing. Didn't take me too long to find the fabrics for this one!

I'll hold back on cutting the sashing until I know what I've got left- don't want to run out halfway through! This is much more up my street than the mini jobs!

Hee hee,no I don't!    Let me tell you something I have learned about chain piecing ( the flying geese units): Make sure you have your fabrics the right way round before you a) stitch them together and b) cut them apart!! :rant: :rant: :rant:

Gosh @fajita that was quick.

They look lovely though, crisp in green.

I need to buy 3 more blues to make a colour set, better matches than I thought using thr B&W filter technique

Wow @fajita that is gorgeous and you were very quick! I love the colours. I plan to do a green (emerald) and a purple (amethyst) I haven't decided on the colours for this one yet  :vintage:

Four Blocks ready for the quilt!

@Catllar @everyoneelse .. as I said this quilt doesnt need sashing I just think it will give the blocks a lil space around them ... and of course, if you sash you can also QAYG if you'd like.

Just TWO more tutorials to go ... The next one is only needs 3 blocks IF you are following my idea of a 60" (+ sashing /borders ) 5 x 5 grid quilt.

I cut all of the pieces out shortly after you put this BOM up and they've been sitting on the top of my printer waiting patiently ever since.

Today I've finally made a start.  :thumbsup:
Only one done so far. Others will follow eventually.

(I know...I know...it doesn't matter. It's not going to be unpicked  ;) It's fine as it is.)

That is very nice @Sandra. I admit I haven't started this one yet, I have been busy with other things.  I did pull out some fabrics but I don't have 7 shades so am awaiting a delivery very soon.  :)

Oh goodie - I have already sorted out emerald colours and probably have a good assortment to sort out the most suitable shades

I'm glad the next block is emerald, I almost picked out greens for the Sapphire block.  I have looked again and think I might have what is needed, so will hopefully make a start tomorrow.  My sapphire block is going to be amethyst  :)

I started the Sapphire block today, and noticed the tiny corner of fabric trapped at the point of the goose.  I couldn't think how that got there and there were two geese with the same.  Then I read the bit where @Iminei said it happens sometimes.  On the next block, I will be on the lookout for this.  I will have to find out why it happened.  I took the tweezer route to get it out  :thumbsup:

If anyone can figure out WHY this happens on only a couple out of many I would be fascinated to know why!!!

Its not a real problem, Tweezers or a few unpicked stitches remedy it easily.

Glad its not just me, and its very easily missed as its so small!

Does it happen where you “ Pivoting at the end of the last of the Four pieces and sewing back along the other side of the line”

I didn’t do that tiny pivoting stitch line. I ended up the first line, snapped thread, then sewed the next line. I didn’t have any corners playing with me.

Ooohhh must try that ... stitching off onto a leader (or ender!!! hahahaha) and returning on the other side .. We will see!

I think that might be the cause @fajita  on the next block I am going to just stop at the end and move across without cutting the thread  :). It will be cu when I cut between the stitch lines (still saving thread) :)

I did as I said in my previous post and had no stray 'goose eggs' in my flying geese.  It must be the pivoting that caused it  :)

I was going great guns with this block until I realised I didn't have enough fabric for the centre sq in a sq  :\  I went to hobbycraft today in search of suitable fabric for the centres, I didn't want to buy a load of fqs just for one fabric, I found something I liked and was going to ask for half a metre until i was told I could have a little as 10 cm! so I had just a 20cm piece, but then saw another I like and had another 20cm  :S  then I saw some fat quarters near the till and they jumped into my arms with the rest  :loveit:

So much for not wanting to buy more fabric  :|

1st Sapphire Star finished

The dark colour when I laid it out was  too dark so a bit of hunting produced the block blue.
Still have 3 more to go

My blues were a bit too dark I think ... OR ... it might be the light in my dining room!!!!

I will see when I take the six blocks out in the daylight (Six gemstones)  ... but theyre done and I doubt I'll redo.

August's Block is looking good, I've made Two of the Four required, Hope I can finish them this week!

Eventually knuckled down to finishing my Sapphire blocks this afternoon. I'm not particularly happy with them - I don't like the thickness where the FG and SiS join, but they'll look OK once they're all quilted. The centre square IS actually a blue batik but in the photo it looks a murky grey. :\
