Title: Block 5 - The EMERALD Star
Post by: Iminei on July 17, 2021, 05:46:04 AM
Welcome to
TSP's Mystery Quiltalongathon Block for 2021
...

After the great success of last years QAYG BOM,
I decided to combine the BOM with a finished article,

A Mystery Quiltalongathon !!

A BOM with an agenda !!!

but here's a clue, I've called it

The Sparkling Stars Quilt

I thought, as Stars are so often referred to as Diamonds,
I would assign a different Gemstone to each Block.
and try and convey a sense of that jewel with my choice of fabrics .......

You can follow my choice of gemstone for each star ...
or choose your own according to the fabrics you have to hand

Here we are coming up to the home straight of our
MysteryQuiltalongathon Block of the Month,
(Just ONE more Block left to make after this!!! )

So for the FIFTH Block of
2021 TSP's Mystery Quiltalongathon

We have

The Amethyst EMERALD Star
The Emerald Star (https://photos.app.goo.gl/kfGdTFxyqPpHJrxt8)

* * * * * * * * * * * * *

As ever,
Click on the first pic to bring it up to Full size
and then on the i Icon
(top right corner of the pic on a laptop, click the three dots on a tablet/ phone)
to bring up the instructions to the side of the pic.

 Please DO read right through the tutorial before you start cutting or sewing

The LAST block, Block SIX, will be released on Saturday 28th August ...

*    *     *     *     *      *

There will be SIX Gemstone Blocks, posted at 6 weekly intervals
from the end of January to end of August,
giving you ample time to gather your fabrics and make your Stars!

You will need to make between FIVE and THREE Blocks for each Star.

The techniques used throughout the Sewalongs will be fairly simple
and there are Tut's available in The Darkside Tutorials should you need to refresh your memory.

This Mystery Quilt comprises a 5 by 5 grid of 12" (f) blocks
to make a finished quilt of 60" sq,
before any added borders or sashing.

You can of course make it smaller or even larger if you wish.

* * * Fabric Requirements * * *

This Mystery Quilt will require approximately 3m's of
ONE consistent background fabric throughout the quilt

and a different Gemstone colour each month ...
within which there will be between 3 - 6 different shades.

(I'm not so good at the Maths but a 1/4 metre or FQ of each gemstone colour/shade should be ample)

And everyone who finishes 2021 with a completed quilt
will receive an exclusive

The Sewing Places's
Prize Winners Enamel badge or Sew on Embroidered Patch!!!

Oooh...lovely!

I didn't realise we were due this yet. I'm a bit behind on the sapphire, still having two to make.
I've been so busy with work sewing that I CBA with anything else.

Glad I bailed out as they're all too complicated and fiddly for an old girl like me :D
Really looking forward to seeing everyone's finished quilts as I'm sure they'll be lovely.
When will they be finished by?  :sew:
P.S. I'd do another gem rather than emerald....but that's just me :D
Will you be starting soon @Pearl now school's out?

I think the instructions on this are a bit off, but I’m too hot and bothered to edit them. Maybe in a day or two when it cools down.
Or maybe they’re fine and my brain has just melted.

Anyway …

Lovely colours @fajita  :loveit:

I've been cutting my pieces out for this and I think the instructions might be a bit off too. I thought it might just have been me cutting it all out wrong and getting in a muddle.

It's at the part when you say to cut for the HST's. You ask for two 2 1/2" brights but you need one 3" bright and one 3" light...?

Finished - having become very well acquainted with my ripper.  See if anyone can spot the deliberate mistake with this emerald star!  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Looks like there's another ripper opportunity on the top one. Bummer

That's all ok.

It was earlier in the tut where you have the step saying all the pieces we have to cut out to make this block.
When I got to the part quoted above, I was short of a three inch square of bright and a three inch square of light for the HST's. The earlier cutting instructions said to cut two x two and a half inch squares of bright.

Maybe @fajita can confirm or not, if this is what she felt was a bit off...?

Or maybe it was me after all  -<

Ok. My notes as follows-

Mixing 3” measurements, which are also 2 7/8” measurements, introduces a little layer of confusion. Choose one and be consistent. You did explain the two measurements but it meant I was never 100% sure on this.

Half sq triangles -

Take your four 3” lt squares
And one 3” bright sq …… this square doesn’t exist

Pair with four background 3” sq
And one light 3” sq … this square doesn’t exist

These along with your 2 1/2” light sq (doesn’t exist)

No mention of medium block use anywhere - the photos are very useful for sorting things.

Not trying to be picky, @Iminei , I very much appreciate all the work you put into these :* THANKYOU.

Feel free to correct my corrections. It is very late and very

The same as I thought. Thanks Fajita. I'm relieved it wasn't just me.

If I'd have cut the pieces for each step as I went along I wouldn't have encountered any missing bits, but I was a bit low on the one piece of fabric I was using so cut all the pieces before making a start to ensure I'd have enough. (I had plenty.)

As Fajita says...  :* thank you for the time and trouble you go to putting these up for us.

Ok

I've altered the initial components instruction to

ONE 3" Bt Green sq
ONE 3" Lt Green sq

These make the Green HSTs for the middle of the block

The 2 1/2" Lt Green Sqs at the assembly stage have been corrected to MD Green Sqs

The 2 7/8th measurement is obvious (I think) as I clearly put my preferred cutting measurement of 3" and explanation in brackets underneath

And the confusion over the HST is a bit baffling as the picture clearly shows the sqs with the drawn lines and those without, which will be the bottom of the pairings ...

The only thing I think could have made it clearer is to have the photo with the drawn line triangles on the top row, as I mention them first. Ive tried flipping the photo but that looks weird so I have altered the wording in the tutorial ....

Next Step ...
Half Square Triangles!

From the Bottom Row
take your
FOUR 3" Lt G sqs and
ONE   3" Bt G sq and
draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the reverse of the fabric.

Place Right Sides Together (RST) with the
FOUR Bg 3" sqs and the
ONE 3" Lt G sq
from The Top Row

and for you here I have Labelled the sqs below.

Hope this makes things clearer ... Apologies for any confusion
any other corrections needed let me know.

This s my first of Block 5 Emerald.  I am not sure I like the colour combination and some points are missing.  I struggled with the thickness around the sq in sqs.   The mid green has shown a bit on the blue side but it is more green. Critique on colours please?

Edit: I erroneously cut off the side points when I photographed it, they are there, I assure you :)
