Title: Up Up and Away Cushion
Post by: Diane on November 16, 2021, 19:28:10 PM
Well after all the chat about Foundation Paper Piecing i thought well why not, i like puzzles and it may be right up my street. I've bought this cushion pattern and it's made up of 109 pieces, today my tones of white fat quarters got delivered along with some A4 tracing paper that i can put in my printer to print the pattern pieces on and a add a quarter piecing ruler to help with accuracy when folding the paper. Just need to sort out some fabric tomorrow and i'm all ready to start.

@Pearl I've been watching a lot of tutorials on Youtube and i really like the way it is done, always up for a challenge so it should keep me busy for a while.

I've done some FPP and find it quite rewarding - once I get my head round what I'm doing that is!! I have to read the instructions every time as it doesn't come naturally to me.  :D

@Diane that looks fun.  I’ve only done a couple of FFP’s which I enjoyed but they were much smaller, have fun and keep us up to date.

Well i've printed all of the pattern pieces out on the A4 Vellum paper and that's worked a treat  :thumb: I'll cut them out as i need them as it seems a more organised way of doing it and i don't want to get in a pickle with it. When i get to do the sewing i'm going to set my stitch length to 1.5mm so it makes it easier to pull the paper away. The paper will stay on until it has all been completely pieced together.

They look fabulous and a really great way to keep the brain engaged as well as the hands, not too sure I have the patients for something that detailed.
I don’t have good colour sense when it comes to fabrics, I am fine with wool but fabrics seem to defeat me.
Although you have made me think about a kit I think I might have lurking in a cupboard somewhere

This is tricky getting your head round which way the fabric should be, got the first one wrong so I’ve redone it, one down and 108 to go.

109/108

@Diane  I just read somewhere that if you dampen the paper, it makes it easier to tear away.

Post by: Iminei on November 17, 2021, 15:43:18 PM
@Diane .. I used cheap childrens tracing paper (99p for an A4 pack of 10 sheets?) which printed fine and as you sew to the reverse of the paper there was no chance of transfer of ink
Title: Re: Up Up and Away Cushion
Post by: Diane on November 17, 2021, 15:44:13 PM
@toileandtrouble Thanks for that, i'll see what it's like when i get to the stage.

Well the first two pieces i bu**ered up  so i redone those. After doing a few bits i now get the gist of it. The only thing that i'm finding difficult is making the right colour choices, I'm not sure it goes what i've done but i've started it now so i'll just carry on, i'll do this as a practice piece. I've managed to do 10 pieces this afternoon so quite happy with that.

@Iminei Thanks i'll get some of that, wasn't sure if it would print very well so bought the vellum paper.

@Diane Patterntrace sells A4 FPP paper at £11.90 for 100 sheets which might be another option if you can't find cheap tracing paper.

@Diane   I use very cheap thin A4 note pads that I buy from the local office superstore...I think they're about 55gm instead of the usual 80gm wt of ordinary paper. Ridiculously cheap. The only thing I have to do is feed it one sheet at a time through my printer rather than putting a heap in the printer tray...that makes my printer very unwell and constipated!

If you can, buy yourself a cheap lightbox...it's been a life saver for me with my current project and saved me so much unpicking through wrong placement. :)

@Celia i know it looks complicated but in actual fact it’s not. I looked at a few videos and then just used one of them to refer to when I started doing it. How about printing off a free pattern, something small and just have a practice with it. I messed up my first two attempts but now I know what I’m doing and it’s really quite simple.

This afternoon i have finished piecing the balloon parts, i have now have a pile of jigsaw like bits that i now have to put together  :faints: I think this is a job for Monday when DH is at work and i don't have any interruptions, i had to redo three sections earlier due to chit chat about his bitcoins that have dropped in price  and then he asked me if i'd like to invest some money ....not on your nelly

Title: Re: Up Up and Away Cushion
Post by: Diane on November 21, 2021, 09:54:36 AM
@Iminei After piecing a few together i'm finding it very easy, it's nowhere near as complicated as i first thought. I'm not sure all the fabrics go together, they wouldn't have been my first choice but i was just going with what i have at hand, it will probably look better once i've pieced them together a bit more.
Title: Re: Up Up and Away Cushion

Title: Re: Up Up and Away Cushion
Post by: Diane on November 22, 2021, 16:34:46 PM
Well i've had a busy afternoon, mostly sewing and some unpicking , Managed to piece rows 1-10 together, spent ages redoing one part where one piece was incredibly narrow, couldn't leave it as it would annoy me. So now i have the balloon part sewn together, tomorrow i will do the two rows that form the basket.

Title: Re: Up Up and Away Cushion
Post by: Diane on November 24, 2021, 09:53:15 AM
I've finished the row 11 so that's all pressed, one more row left to do which contains the basket. I've looked through my stash and unbelievably found nothing suitable :faints:, i'm not going to ruin it by just using anything so i've ordered these fat quarters which will arrive tomorrow, i think they'll make a lovely basket.
Title: Re: Up Up and Away Cushion
Post by: Diane on November 24, 2021, 10:02:02 AM
I think while i'm waiting i'll look to see what type of back i'm going to do. Might do an envelope back rather than a zip closure  Once the basket bit is complete i'll sandwich the front and quilt it.

I really have, it's nowhere near as hard as i though and it's one of those crafts that you can just get lost in, i forget about my worries and my anxiety disappears, so all good. I'm on the lookout for my next FPP project, i have something in mind.

Post by: Diane on November 25, 2021, 14:40:16 PM
Made a small bit of progress this afternoon, a bit of sewing followed by a bit of unpicking  Anyway the basket is now in place so tomorrow, after i've done the housework, i will stitch some ropes to connect the basket to the balloon (will practice this on scrap fabric first) then add the batting and back it and maybe get to do some quilting, then all that leaves is the piping and back to do.

@Acorn Thankyou, it is very satisfying, looking back it was probably a bit ambitious doing something this big to start with but i got there in the end, i've really enjoyed it and have learnt a few things along the way that i would do better next time. I would love to do a wall hanging using this method maybe depicting a landscape or something similar.

Why not applique the scene ??

You have the fabrics; It would be easy to trace out the elements, adding a 'seam' allowance where needed to overlap  ... a lil heat'n'bond and a blanket, zigzag or straight stitch and you'd be on your way.

If I can take This  (https://photos.app.goo.gl/N1MADicqPqpU8eL69)and make This (https://photos.app.goo.gl/iLnVPEXQWDsoysA2A) you can do that.

Its wonderfully absorbing.

Each month making a block based on what i see in my garden, it could be a robin, bluetit, squirrel, goldfinch, bee or a flower etc

I don't know why or how i ended up with it but you are very welcome to have it,  I dont want anything for it, I can't honestly see me ever using it.  You are unlikely to see puffins or oystercatchers  in your garden but it has patterns for wren, spotted woodpecker, swallow, nuthatch, magpie, jay, sparrow, jackdaw, blue tit, bullfinch and blackbird.

She started off online doing tutorials like this and with help from her mum (who used to work at the wonderful Emporia in Stur. Newton that got taken over by the market traders and is now sadly a pitiful place) they set up a workshop on an Industrial Estate at the top of town.

It is going very well altho' she mainly teaches garment sewing I did a patchwork class there in May 2019 and I believe someone is now running a P&Q group there one day a week .. Ah the joy of self promotion!

Diane your cushion is absolutely beautiful, such lovely colours and it looks like a hot air balloon.  I am amazed at just how quickly you make managed to make this.  What is next in the pipeline?

@Elnnina Once you get the gist of how to piece together then it's quite an easy process. ooh what's next  i'm still trying to decide but i think it might be a wall hanging, i have a space on the wall behind my chair that needs something hanging there. I'll be using the same technique (FPP) as i found it really satisfying, was thinking of doing a block each month based on something that i see in or above my garden.

Sounds interesting Diane, shall look forward to seeing what you make - have fun with this one.  You say you haven't got the room for a pouffe/tuffet so why not make the small tuffet and have this on your sewing table, the one I got my sister I was able to buy some little bun feet as an extra and she is thrilled with this.  My sister waited until she had returned to Canada before she made this up and then this was on a brand new sewing machine which was awaiting her return - so a success all around and it was also the first time she had used the machine.  I always like to try and find something a little bit different for her in the sewing/craft line, and this was was a tremendous hit.

@Elnnina I could make a smaller version as a pin cushion, i have a magnetic pin dish at the moment but i think a pin cushion would be handy, i'll get my thinking cap on.
